Rev Ian Gordon-Cumming (left) with past and present members of the Busbridge and Hambledon clergy team on the 150th Anniversary of Busbridge Church in 2017.

    Eph 1:15

“For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God’s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers.”

As we look forward as a Minster, it is important to remember that we build on deep foundations laid by God. Those foundations include thankfulness for people who have been so inspired by Jesus Christ that they have built the incredible legacy which we are inheritors of.

One such person is Rev Ian Gordon-Cumming. Ian’s name may not be widely known in the Godalming area as he was the vicar of Busbridge between 1978-1987, yet his legacy lives on. Ian died recently and his funeral is at Chichester Cathedral on 29th Feb.

Ian came to Busbridge Church at a time of financial challenge and when there questions about its purpose and future. Ian’s energy and Christ focused love brought something new. He brought a fresh focus to youth work, guitars into Easter services, an innovation called a family service which has grown into our Muddy Church, and a passion for preaching and for God to grow His church.

There is a saying that good work builds on the shoulders of giants. Much that we take for granted today across the Minster has a direct or indirect path back to Ian’s beginnings. He loved all God’s people and he remembered the people of Busbridge Church in particular in his prayers, long into retirement.

Ian had been long retired as I took up my own ministry in the Godalming-Hambledon area in 2010. He was one of the first people to ring me to express hope for the Gospel to continue to be preached locally and to offer to pray for me. His faithful love of Busbridge Church and the people of Godalming lived on.

Ian returned to the area in 2017 for the 150th anniversary celebration of Busbridge Church. Rev Rachel Heathfield (Head), who was in Godalming in the 1980s, wrote at that time “so many people… have gone on from Busbridge to other ministry around the country. It is indeed a “sending” church. I wonder how many people can tell the same story as me of an encounter with Jesus during a service there that has set my lifetime vocation? I was only 13 but it’s as vivid now as it was then. I am forever grateful for Ian Gordon-Cummings for taking me seriously and for hastening me into leadership opportunities”.

As we build on the firm foundation of Jesus Christ who we follow, we do so in thankfulness for the foundations of people and their work for God. Without Ian there may not have been successors to him who built on his pioneering work and his shoulders of faith.

This is an opportunity to give thanks for those who have supported our personal firm foundation of faith in Jesus Christ. It is an invitation to ask God to enable us to become people who others might look back at in decades to come.

With so much going on around Godalming Minster, this is a regular item which will remind people about particular areas of mission and ministry. This week, following the 10th anniversary of the Busbridge Hearing Aid Clinic, we are focusing on activities led by Penny Naylor which provide support and friendship for Older People.

    • What’s New? Mental Wellbeing Group (Kintsugi Hope) starting 21 Feb.

    Dear Friends

Godalming Minster made the Diocese news this week, following the wonderful launch service last Sunday. You can see the full story, and some great pictures here.

So many were involved in making it the memorable occasion it was, so huge thanks to all those who welcomed people, sang in the choir, played in the band, served coffee and prosecco, operated the AV, ran the children’s activities, or helped clear up! The new audio visual system was thoroughly put through its paces, though we apologise that the live stream was not available as hoped. This will be tested for future events. The brass engraved plaque which was presented to Mayor of Godalming, Adam Duce for public display by Godalming Town Council reads:

At this historic time for the community, we commit to working together for the good and benefit of the town and its residents.

Presented to Councillor Adam Duce, the Town Mayor of Godalming,
by The Reverend Simon Taylor, Rector of Godalming Minster, and
Churchwardens David Wilkin and William Bryans
     to commemorate the inauguration of
Godalming Minster on 14th January 2024

The bible verse at the bottom of the plaque, and on the celebratory cake is:
“And in this place I will grant peace” declares the Lord Almighty”.

    Haggai 2:9

(A replica will be on display in the Busbridge Old Rectory in due course.)

    This Sunday

    10.30am Churches Together United Service

    Introducing…Older People’s Ministry

The cake says it all! Tea, cake and the Jack Russell are as much a feature of the Godalming Minster Hearing Aid Clinics as the batteries and maintenance.
The cake says it all! Tea, cake and the Jack Russell are as much a feature of the Godalming Minster Hearing Aid Clinics as the batteries and maintenance.

Last Friday the Busbridge Hearing Aid Clinic celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special party like clinic for visitors in the Old Rectory. BHC was an early pioneer of the Diocese Hear Here project at Busbridge Church, and Penny and the Hearing Aid Champions have since started monthly clinics at Hambledon (10.30-11.30 on 3rd Wednesdays of the month), and most recently, a very busy clinic at Godalming Library (10.30-12.30 on 3rd Mondays of the month). 9 visitors attended the first clinic in 2014. Average monthly numbers are now more than five times higher. That’s a lot of people who have avoided longer journeys, costly parking and lengthy queues at NHS hospitals and clinics. And there’s time for a chat too! You can also pick up Hearing Aid batteries from the Yew Tree Café anytime. See Hearing Aid Clinics.

Many other things make up Older People’s ministry, one of the main ones being Prime Time. Prime Time hosts a range of informative and social events designed to enrich and appeal to the more mature (there’s no age limit). Events are free, and transport can be provided. From Movie Matinees held monthly in Godalming Minster Brighton Road from Oct-March, to special and seasonal events. The event next week promises to be a real treat, and all are welcome:

Prime Time Harp Recital by Margaret Watson – 2.30pm on 26 Jan. See flyer. Margaret Watson is one of the busiest professional harpists in South East England and she is renowned for her versatility as a harpist in the range of music she performs. Margaret has performed for Royalty at the London’s Guildhall, The Savoy and The Ritz, but for one afternoon only she will perform for Prime Time at Godalming Minster Brighton Road.

  • Godalming welcomes new Minster

    Godalming welcomes new Minster

    Godalming Welcomes new Minster

Sunday 14 January witnessed a historic moment for the Godalming area as Bishop Andrew Watson led a service at the new Godalming Minster on Godalming’s Church Street.

Local police, school leaders, voluntary group leaders, MP for Southwest Surrey Jeremy Hunt, the Mayors of Waverley and Godalming, local councillors and the Lord Lieutenant of Surrey Michael Molyneux joined Rector Simon Taylor, the Bishops of Guildford and Dorking and the clergy team in an informal procession from the Pepperpot to the church before the service started.

Associate Vicar Sheila Samuels opened the service and set the scene for an hour of worship which encompassed the diversity of styles and people that Godalming Minster gathers in.  From roof-raising choral anthems and rousing hymns led by the choir, to foot-tapping, and raising worship songs led by Rev Simon Willetts and the band. The music provided the lift-off.

While the children left for some lively and engaging prayer activity, Bishop Andrew gave a sermon sharing about the sacrifice and risk undertaken by the parishes involved in forming Godalming Minster and the need for us to orbit our lives around Jesus, rather than revolving life around us.

Community leaders were invited to welcome the Minster to Godalming and shared their commitment to work together for the good of the community.

The Mayor of Godalming, Adam Duce, commented that he’d not been in a service quite like it! The children returned to let off 50 giant party poppers and enjoy the cake. “It was a bit messier than I expected!” remarked Rev Simon Taylor, showing the creativity of the members of the Minister.

The Minster Launch service took place in one of the oldest, and certainly largest buildings in Godalming. St Peter & St Paul’s is a historic landmark which will inevitably be a flagship for Godalming Minster. But the Minster is not about one building or even the four churches that it unites.

The adage that “the whole is greater than the sum of the parts” is fitting, as each church, hosting multiple congregations and sharing Jesus’ care and love in the community will be just as much Godalming Minster as the other.

St Peter’s Hambledon has been at the centre of its rural community, emitting God’s love and teaching to its special village for centuries; Busbridge Church Brighton Road is known for its vibrant and contemporary approach to worship and spirituality; and St Mark’s Franklyn Road runs the Godalming Foodbank. St Mark’s also celebrates 90 years of service this year at the heart of Ockford Ridge and Aaron’s Hill.

So, Godalming Minster is a community, sharing the goal to serve the community and lead people to follow Jesus, love people and refresh what it means to be church.

    What’s a Minster?

For 1,000 years Minsters served wide areas with a heart for God’s mission to care for all people. A Minster was a dynamic innovative community of Christian worship, rooted in Scripture, making sense of the World in a way which showed love and compassion. Ministers were hospitals, supported the local economy, developed pubs for safe low alcohol drinking, provided education, community support and alleviated poverty. They preached Christ and lived it daily around a pattern of prayer and praise.

    What is your Godalming Minster?

Godalming Minster is a centre of love and care, serving and creating community, wellbeing and hospitality, breaking down barriers; spiritual nourishment and teaching about the uniqueness of Jesus Christ, the Holy Spirit and God our loving Father.

Godalming Minster is a community which seeks to follow Jesus, love people and renew Christian faith in a way which makes a good difference in our lives and the lives of others. We represent people from many walks of life, backgrounds, ethnicities, political views, employment routes, incomes, places we live, where we work and what we do for hobbies.  Our mission is expressed in groups and activities for every age and stage, for those with particular interests and those with particular needs, touching all areas in our wonderful community.  If you are open, Godalming Minster is for you, for life.

    Dear Friends,

Here we are, almost a fortnight into life in Godalming Minster. This Sunday is a special one as we all come together for the official launch of Godalming Minster, 10.30am at Godalming Minster St Peter & St Paul’s Church Street. There you will be joined by bishops, MPs, mayors, councillors, representatives from local schools and town services, all taking part in a very historic event for the Godalming area. The service will feature elements representing all corners of the Minster, and finish with a celebration at the end.

Please arrive in plenty of time. If you are arriving by car, we suggest parking in the Crown Court car park (free on Sundays), exit river side and then look out for a Welcomer in a high-viz jacket to direct you. Tea, coffee and squash will be available from 9.50-10.20am in the Lady Chapel area, to the far right of the main door. Choral and contemporary music will be sung and played by the choir and band from approx 9.50am.

The Clergy team and community leaders will be making an informal procession from the Pepperpot to Godalming Minster Church Street just after 10am.

During the service, children of any age will be invited to nip out for a while to take part in fun activities in the Octagon. If that’s not enough, there will be limited edition Godalming Minster cookies to go with the prosecco (or non-alcoholic alternative) after the service!

This will be the only service taking place in Godalming Minster this Sunday. Everyone has a part to play, and we give thanks for everyone involved in the planning of this Sunday.

The plan is also to publish a monthly printed news sheet for different locations, which will include more local items and events calendars.

You may have noticed that Clergy and staff emails have now been changed to firstname.lastname@godalmingminster.org. This includes email addresses for John Harkin, Sarah Bryans, Karen Milton and Sheila Samuels. Please update your email address books! Messages sent to the old bhcgodalming.org addresses will be forwarded for the time being.

Social Media – On Instagram, the BHCGodalming acount has changed to @godalmingminster, and the existing followers have been transferred with it. The name change has been requested on Facebook, so that could happen anytime too.

The URL (domain name) for ChurchSuite and YouTube will be updated to Godalming Minster next week. The fully united web site will take a bit longer, but the bhcgodalming.org site will be incorporating content from Godalming Parish in the meantime.

  • Welcome to Godalming Minster

    Acts 2:42-47

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common… with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

Godalming Minster: an exciting time, now

We’ve arrived! We are Godalming Minster and we are part of the future. What an exciting time to be living in the Godalming area. Even for someone not connected to Christianity, this about living in a time of the possibility of Godalming being known as ‘The Minster Town of Godalming’ and the good that this could bring to the town.

The Minster: “Is it a building, is it a place? no it’s a people and language”

I was recently talking to some people about The Minster. The conversation led me to share an image which I have used several times recently about who and what we’ve become, and it is exciting to share it with you because it is about being united in faith and far from monochrome in how we serve and worship.

    The cinema

Imagine going to the cinema. The cinema doesn’t play multiple films in the same space because that wouldn’t work and not everyone likes the same thing. Instead, as you enter you have a choice of start time, style and genre. One film might be loud and exciting, but your friend’s film might create a reflective space. You might go in the morning, but another film might be on in the evening.

This is a great image for serving across Godalming Minster. The Minster offers different ways to serve the people of the area. There may be activities which are loud and exciting, and others which create a reflective space for healing and pondering. One activity might be geared for children, another for the recently bereaved who are asking questions of life, faith and purpose.

It is also a great image for worship across Godalming Minster. The worship in a place is not confined to being for a particular group or location. It belongs to everyone and everything of the Minster because everyone is invited. One person may prefer something choral with robes, another person may seek something loud and contemporary with the leader in jeans; one person may only have mid-afternoon free on a weekday while another person may have been brought up to see Sunday morning as special. The style, location, time, ambience and genre is available for all that which is right for that moment. You’re invited to try all the styles and see which helps you worship. They’re all equally valid and important.

Godalming Minster is about recognising that we live in a small town and the joy that the Minster brings to this is that the whole town can now be the Minster Town of Godalming. We’re bringing people together across locations, life-backgrounds, finances, past-times, ages, political views and so much more.

    The bowling alley

I relate this unity to an event of was at about twenty years ago. I had the unique experience of being required to take my passport to a Christian conference! There was to be a surprise speaker whose identity was kept under wraps for security reasons. This speaker, who was well known in politics, made a comment that has stayed with me.

They told the story of being in a ten pin bowling alley. Towards one end was a particularly large group which struck the speaker as so different that they approached one of the party. What attracted the speaker was the uniqueness of the group. All other groups in the bowling alley were a small family group, or teens of a similar age and dress code, or professional bowlers in full kit. This group were different. They were a large group, they laughed without dominating the place, they were ages from toddlers to the elderly, people who were clearly not related were helping one another to bowl, and there was an atmosphere around the group that stood out as different. I guess we’d call it love.

The speaker told the conference ‘they were the local church. They were different to anyone else in that bowling alley. They were bowling because one of the older people had missed it since her husband had died.’ That group made a significant impact on the speaker.

Godalming Minster is about being the people of the bowling alley. All ages, all backgrounds, different and offering something different in Christ that people may not recognise, but they sense the difference and want to come over and find out more.

    Recognisable

Whether the cinema or the bowling alley makes more sense to you, what they have in common is:

    ·       they express worship, mission and style differently,

    ·       accept that people travel to them based on what is offered,

    ·       whilst being clear about their purpose and identity.

You know a bowling alley when you enter one. You know what a cinema is when you see it. They have a clear purpose, and so do we. We’re a Minster that is united in faith in Christ as our Saviour, Scripture as God’s Word, the work of the Holy Spirit to change us as we seek to follow Jesus, love people and see faith in Christ renewed because a we long for everyone to discover what we know to be true.

Welcome to the future as Godalming Minster. It is a language, and we are its people who are being changed by God into following, loving and renewing faith. It is the language and people of Acts 2:

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and to fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer. Everyone was filled with awe at the many wonders and signs performed by the apostles. All the believers were together and had everything in common… with glad and sincere hearts, praising God and enjoying the favour of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

We’re following Jesus, loving people and renewing faith. Following Jesus is our personal response. Loving people is how and why we share our faith. Renewing faith is about growing younger with a new generation of renewed faith taking their place as Godalming Minster.

As we enter 2024, following Jesus into the World of Godalming Minster, try a different service, step into God’s mission and offer to support worship and activity on a Sunday. We are Godalming Minster. That’s why I am excited.

  • Christmas Wishes

    Dear Friends

With 2 sleeps, and 8 services to go until the choice of 4 services on Christmas morning, you now just need the right hand column of the Christmas Unwrap Christmas programme to see you through to 31st Dec! It’s been a most wonderful time of preparation together with everyone in Godalming Minster, and the two pub carol events at the Howling Owl and The Merry Harriers this past week really brought the communities of Busbridge and Hambledon out in force, and in forceful singing!

    Also see www.godalmingminster.org/christmas

This year’s Christmas Appeal is in aid of Elam Ministries (see https://www.elam.com) and read the update below. It’s not too late to make a donation.

  • Notices for Mission Sunday 10 December

    Dear Friends

What a great start to Advent! An enjoyable quiz, Advent Carols in all their forms (traditional to acoustic contemporary around the campfire) took place last weekend, and this week the Christmas hampers have been prepared and packed. Sherry with the Vicars was a lovely event, bringing Prime Time together with people from across the Minster churches. After completing the Christingle kits for this Sunday, guests set about covering hamper boxes. There’s no sherry in the pics below, but we are reliably informed that it wasn’t all hard work!

You may have seen the promotion for The First Nowell video on Instagram and Facebook already, but we’ll be seeing it again on Sunday, and the full version of the video will be premiered at the 4pm Christingle, and at the Carol services on 17 December. Christmas Hampers
The first batch of hampers was packed on Thursday evening at the Packing Party at St Mark’s. Thanks to Karen Milton for organising everything, and to all those who came to help, our youth group and a group from Priors Field School.

There are more households on the list, so it’s not too late to donate items to help local families, some of whom are supported by the Foodbank at St Mark’s year round, and some who appreciate a little help at this time of year. We like to make the hampers a real treat and show of love and generosity to those who might not be able to enjoy the nicer things at Christmas. It is especially appreciated if the items are from the luxury range rather than value range. See the shopping lists and select 3 or 4 items to buy. No gifts will be wasted! Penny has brought new life and organisation to this and we’ve seen several excellent new BJS church appointed governors step forward und Penny’s care of the SAM group. The SAM group helps the PCC know what is happening with the children and older people’s teams. Thank you Penny! And thank you to all our dedicated Christian BJS school governors.

It will actually be the 3rd course run together, but we are starting a bigger campaign for this one. Keith Harper will be delighted to hear from you whichever option you choose!

    Advent & Christmas

There is now a very simple holding page for www.godalmingminster.org to direct everyone to Christmas events and services, and the existing church web sites. (Development of an exciting new web site for January is getting underway.) Pick up a Christmas programme at church this Sunday, or download the pdf below:

    URGENT call for Christmas Hampers
Godalming Minster is collecting goodies to make up gift hampers for local families, some of whom are supported by the Foodbank at St Mark’s year round, and some who appreciate a little help at this time of year. We hope to make the hampers a real treat and show of love and generosity to those who might not be able to enjoy the nicer things at Christmas. It is especially appreciated if the items are from the luxury range rather than value range. See the shopping lists and select 3 or 4 items to buy. No gifts will be wasted! You can drop hamper items off at the Yew Tree Café from next week until 3 December.

    Help make it all happen
It be great to spread the load this Christmas and support our service and worship leaders in making every service and event a success. Please look at the programme and let the Church office know when you are available. e: church.office@bhcgodalming.org.

Churches Together Christmas Day Lunch – Helpers needed
Churches Together in Godalming and District for many years has organised a Christmas Day Lunch for people who would otherwise spend the day on their own. Invitations to attend are distributed through the Godalming churches, doctors’ surgeries and community centres.

Guests arrive at Godalming Baptist Church in Queen Street for a soft drink followed by a full Christmas lunch.  After lunch there is entertainment and everyone is given a small gift. The day is very good fun and a lovely way to spend Christmas!

Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles:  preparing food and setting tables on 24 December; providing transport on Christmas Day, helping in the kitchen with serving and washing up, hosting the day; providing entertainment and a team to help clear away.  If you can help, or would like to be a guest, please complete and return the forms below.

Godalming Minster News & to dos!

Call to Prayer! We are truly seeking God’s glory in the creation of Godalming Minster and call everyone to pray together at Busbridge Church at 7.30pm on Monday 4 Dec. You can also join a Morning prayer on Wednesdays at 9am on Zoom or at Hambledon Church, or pray in your small group, with a friend, or on your own. Creating a Minster (the first of it’s kind) is a thrilling but not uncomplicated prospect, particularly following the busy Christmas season. Please pray for everyone involved, and especially our clergy and church wardens.

    Save the dates:

A Special Parochial Church Meeting (SPCM) will follow morning services on Sunday 7 Jan, 11.30am at Godalming Minster Busbridge Church Brighton Road. At this important meeting, those people present will vote in the Godalming Minster Officers and PCC members: ·

    2 Churchwardens
To the Parochial Church Council 15 (maximum) lay representatives
To the Deanery Synod: 6 (maximum) lay representatives
Other matters of parochial or general church interest

Eight representatives from Busbridge Church, three from Hambledon Church will be elected to serve on the Minster PCC. Anyone who is on the current Electoral Rolls is eligible to vote. The electoral rolls will close to new applicants on 18 December and the roll will be published on 24 December (2 Sundays before the SPCM). Apply to the Electoral Roll.

You are invited to the Godalming Minster Launch service on 14 January, 10.30am at Godalming Minster Church Street. The service will be led by The Rt Revd Andrew Watson, Bishop of Guildford, with hymns accompanied by the choir, and band led worship. There will be children’s activities in the Octagon and prosecco and coffee afterwards.

    Dear Friends,

149 people were remembered at the Memorial Service last Saturday. As always, the home baking and cheerful service was magnificent and really appreciated by those who attended in person. For those who couldn’t attend, it was obviously still important. As an online attendee wrote:

“I was very pleased and moved to hear all of my family remembered by name – it is comforting to know that their memory lives on in our old parish church, as well as in me, here in New Zealand.”

Thanks to absolutely everyone involved, and to Margot who led the service and all it’s arrangements.

The Bereavement café is running twice more this year, as usual next Tuesday 28 Nov 2.30-4pm, and in the evening from 7-8.30pm on Tuesday 12 Dec for mulled wine and mince pies. The Bereavement Café will be in Old Rectory on both occasions.

The notices this week are largely concerned with Advent and Christmas, and the countdown to Godalming Minster. However, please also spend a few moments to consider the Alpha course information in preparation for the course starting on 11 January – and what it might mean for you.

The sermon series for Advent begins this Sunday, with the teaser “Are we ready for what’s coming?” Ha ha! All sorts of answers might come to mind… Thankfully it’s not referring to your Sainsbury’s Christmas slot or shopping achievements on so called “Black” Friday. Not even to the preparations for starting a Minster. But is should make us sit up and draw us closer to God as we follow the most loved Christmas story through Advent.
