    Pentecost Sunday

    Dear Friends

This Sunday we remember what has often been called the “birth of the church”.  After waiting on God as they had been told to do, the Holy Spirit arrived, filling, equipping and empowering the early disciples to spread the gospel, bringing the blessings to many that Acts and the early church’s letters describe.  He has been at work in Christ’s church ever since! Join us this Sunday to celebrate this important event, and the Spirit’s continuing work among us together!

The Godalming Run is also taking place this Sunday, so particularly for those coming to morning services at Church Street, please note that Borough Road, Church Street and Westbrook Road will be closed to vehicular traffic from 09.50 to 13.00. Parking in Crown Court and other car parks will also be busier than usual!

    Good News Stories

Newcomers to Godalming Minster enjoyed a nice little garden party in glorious sunshine last Sunday at the Taylors. Thanks to all those who came. It was great to meet you!

With thanks to Yew Tree Café volunteer Sue Hardy for sharing:
An elderly couple were in having coffee and cake. I was engaged chatting with them as they left… I established they had travelled over to the Yew Tree from Guildford, he’d just had a cataract operation and this was their first visit out  – I asked what brought them over our way – expecting an answer such as ‘We’d come to see grandchildren/children or a visit to the arboretum’ that had led them to us, but no…

‘Oh we often make the journey over…. This café is like no other café we have ever been to – we just love it! The staff are always so friendly and have time to chat to us, the coffee is great as is the food and cake, it’s got such an amazing special atmosphere’

Told them that had warmed my heart and hoped to see them again very soon.

This morning was a regular shift not manically busy but a lovely continual flow…. Some new mums who were warmly welcomed and will come again, our regulars who find company and solace and are ministered to, some staff and PCC members and mini meetings, the workers (quite a lot of them today), teachers and parents from the schools. Another new visitor who’s child has just started at St Edmunds just found us, was engaged with and will return. New parents who were commenting on the beautiful building and café we have created – was able to tell them the story of how it came to be…. I am very proud of it and love to talk about it!

This is ministry in the community….. Christ has no hands and feet but ours…… Love my shift…and the people God puts me in connection with, that I would otherwise never meet with.

As well as listing upcoming events, please do let us know of any encouraging stories from around Godalming Minster which show some of the many faces of mission. There are touching exchanges happening allover, be it at the Franklyn Road Hub, Foodbank and after school Youth Café; at PrimeTime events and Hearing Aid Clinics; at Octots, ABC Toddlers and Smartots to name but a few every week!

Prayer Request for the Staff and PCC Strategy Day on 18th May
We recently mentioned that the Minster’s senior leadership group was going to spend a day with an external facilitator from CPAS. The church family was asked to pray for the group and many of you mentioned that you had done this. The group began to shape the work that will be undertaken by the PCC and staff team together on Saturday May 18th at the Old Rectory. This is a second planning day where we will be looking at how the PCC and the whole church family take the goals forward of growing younger, discipleship and mission and evangelism forward, so that our vision is fulfilled to be a Minster that follows Jesus, loves people and renews faith.

Your prayers for May 18th are greatly appreciated. Please pray for Mat Ineson (our facilitator) the PCC, the staff, all preachers, congregational leaders who are attending, and the clergy  as the clergy look at mission and evangelism in the next few days; and for where each Christian can bring your own faith to fruit in the Minster’s mission under God.

BUILD ON ROCK – BASED ON THE LIFE OF THE DISCIPLE PETER

Two of the churches within Godalming Minster are dedicated to St Peter, so it is fitting that this series takes us on a journey through the Gospels and Acts from the call of Peter to be a disciple of Jesus,  to his leadership of the early church.  This will be a thought provoking series about our personal journeys, and the opportunities for us as a Minster community, drawing lessons and parallels from the life and experiences of Peter.  We look forward to getting started!

90th birthday fun at St Mark’s and All Saints school field last Sunday

The celebrations started for the St Mark’s 90th anniversary at the 10am Franklyn Road service last Sunday. Later the sun came out (miraculously?) just in time for the fun day on the school field, bringing Minster people and local friends together for 90 bumps on the bouncy castle, live music, crafts, games and a lot of cake! There’s more to come in 2024 as we mark 90 years of Christian worship, witness and ministry in the Ockford Ridge and Aaron’s Hill community. Thanks to all the organisers, helpers and fun-goers. Mens Breakfast Saturday 4th May  at 8.15 am

Please join us for another sumptuous morning feast. Well…coffee, toast, marmalade and porridge ….last month’s experiment with baked beans will be repeated another time….

This month we will be discussing another topical news item – and after 20 years of men’s breakfasts there hasn’t been one without a moral, spiritual or Christian dimension…and this month’s subject is water and  trains…..Time to put public good before private profit?  Our discussion this month  will be about how we make judgements about these sort of issues – is there a Biblical basis to help us sort out what is best…what is just?  Or is it all entirely pragmatic with little underlying morality?  Join us this Saturday to discuss.

Are you new or new-ish? If you’ve joined a Minster congregation, or starting coming to a group or activity in the last year or so, please do get in touch by replying to these notices, or filling in the welcome form. Simon and Catherine Taylor are hosting a tea for newcomers on Sunday 12th May so it would be great to have your details if you’d like to be invited.

BUILD ON ROCK – BASED ON THE LIFE OF THE DISCIPLE PETER
Two of the churches within Godalming Minster are dedicated to St Peter so it is fitting that this series takes us on a journey through the Gospels and Acts from the call of Peter to be a disciple of Jesus  to his leadership of the early church.  This will be a thought provoking series about our personal journeys, and the opportunities for us as a Minster community, drawing lessons and parallels from the life and experiences of Peter.  We look forward to getting started!

    Coming Up – Highlights

Godalming Minster is holding the first of it’s 90th birthday celebrations for St Mark’s Church this Sunday. Join us at the free community fun day on the St Mark’s and All Saint’s school field from 3-5pm on 28th April, with live music, tea and cake, crafts, games and the bouncy castle. The St Mark’s community events have been popular in recent years and we hope this one will be extra special for the church, school and community, but everyone is invited! Look out for the publicity on social media.

    After church on 28th April
Following church on Sunday 28th April, why not stroll up (or down) to the outdoor Artisan Market at the Fox and Finch pub where you’ll find Dawn O’Toole (contemporary congregation) spinning her potter’s wheel! You can have a go at throwing a pot with Dawn, in return for a donation to Macmillan. Buy a coffee or drink while you browse the stalls together, and perhaps book a table for lunch with others? The Artisan Market is on from 10am-2pm. As well as supporting Macmillan, it could be a very nice social opportunity!

Thu 2 May – Nexus welcomes author and triathlete Helen McCann to talk about her experiences. All welcome to drinks and the talk. More details.

If you’ve joined a Minster congregation, or starting coming to a group or activity in the last year or so, please do get in touch by replying to these notices, or filling in the welcome form. Mission Update

    Furniture request for Ukrainians
The Godalming Minster congregations have good reputation for supporting requests for Ukrainians as they move from host families to homes of their own. Can we help two young women who signed a contract on a flat today and have absolutely no furniture?  If anyone is refurbishing or upgrading their kitchen, we should be thrilled to have a washing machine and fridge freezer.  Apart from that, general household goods of any sort will be appreciated. We have a few bits and pieces in a garage where we store things but for example, no sofas, if someone is replacing one of theirs. Contact Diane e: diane.alder@btinternet.com.

  • Notices for 14 April 2024

The Choir at Winchester Cathedral on 7 April 2024
The Choir at Winchester Cathedral on 7 April 2024

    Dear Friends

We hope you have had a wonderful Easter time and will be back with us this Sunday as we embark on the summer term. All services and congregations are back to the normal term-time pattern, with children’s groups running at 10am at Hambledon and 10.30am at Church Street.

Reflecting on the first 3 months as Godalming Minster, with a first Christmas and Easter now behind us, we are really encouraged by some of the signs of growth in mission and ministry. It’s not all about the numbers, but they give an idea:

    • Our Ana chaplain and Godalming Minster volunteers shared communion at two local care homes, with 16+ of residents and staff attending at both.

    • Busbridge Infant School Easter services had all the children plus over 70 great parents in attendance.

    • The Hambledon coffee morning and hearing aid clinic was full to overflowing last month.

    • The Franklyn Road Youth Café on Wednesday afternoons, and the Friday Night Youth social are both growing in popularity, and are needing more volunteers if we are to welcome more young people.

    • Easter Garden service at Brighton Road was fully booked before the publicity event went out. Nearly 200 attended on Easter Saturday.

    • The reintroduced Choral Evensong at Church Street has gathered 40+ people to worship at 5pm for the second month in the row. It’s a wonderfully reflective time inspired by excellent choral music.

    • The Minster choir were invited to sing at two services at Winchester Cathedral last Sunday which was greatly enjoyed by the regular cathedral congregation, and all who went from Godalming. Full story.

If you can feel you can support God’s work in Godalming through the Minster, please do get in touch to offer some time on Sundays or any of the many midweek activities, and also review your financial giving.

    This Sunday

We pick up the Transformed Living sermon series where we left off, in Ephesians 5: 6-21.
The topic is Live in Wisdom and by the Spirit.

Minster Services listed in chronological order:

  • The Godalming Minster choir at Winchester Cathedral

Last Sunday was a proud day for Godalming Minster as the choir which leads worship at the Choral Eucharist and Evensong services at Godalming Minster Church Street, were invited to sing for the morning and evensong services at Winchester Cathedral.

Those who went were treated to the choir’s singing in the fabulous acoustics of the cathedral building, and lots of people said they didn’t know that Godalming had a Minster, and were excited to hear what was happening.

Thanks to everyone at Winchester Cathedral who made the choir and their guests feel so welcome. Thanks to our committed choir members, Matthew (Master of Choristers) and Mitchell (Organist) for leading and accompanying them.

We look forward to their next invitation, but in the meantime you can find the choir at Godalming Minster Church Street 1st, 3rd and 4th (and 5th) Sundays of the month. See the Sundays page for service times.

     CPAS

(Church Pastoral Aid Society (National Anglican Mission)

Since 1836 CPAS continues its calling to work with churches and leaders to help them share the gospel afresh in each generation. Its current ministry involves the oversight of Venture and Falcon holidays, appointing evangelical clergy to our patronage parishes (such as Godalming Minster), and training, resourcing and supporting leaders for mission and evangelism.  See cpas.org.uk

    Five Talents

Five Talents works with the Anglican Church in rural areas of eastern Africa to provide microfinance & business training to communities who have been economically

& socially marginalised.  The charity has strong connections with members of Godalming Minster who have played an instrumental role in the mission.  See fivetalents.org.uk

    Elsewhere

As part of our mission to love people through mission and evangelism, you are invited to an audience with JJohn. JJohn is a well known evangelist, preacher and speaker on apologetics and he’s coming to Guildford Diocese on 15th May 2024. https://allevents.in/guildford/how-to-preach-sermons-which-change-lives-a-masterclass-with-j-john/10000851169078627 (7.30pm).
