The Notices

Holy Week reflections (8PM on Zoom), Maundy Thursday 8PM service (YouTube) and Good Friday 10AM reflection (YouTube) will take place online. See everything that’s happening.

Also, St Marks invites you to join their daily reflections at 13.00pm Sunday-Thursday and at 5pm on the Saturday. The Reflection series is called Sitting at Jesus Feet, as in the story of Mary and Martha, and offers time to sit at Our Lords feet during Holy Week. The reflections will be led by a different person and have a different theme each day, they will last about 45mins to an hour, including readings, thoughts, music and prayer. The team are really excited about it and are keen for as many people, from all the churches in Godalming, to join. BHC members are involved, and would love more of us to come along, and not only join the reflections but to show our united support for St Marks and all they are doing.

Easter Day Services at Busbridge and Hambledon
We are delighted that we will celebrate Easter Day both online, and at Busbridge and Hambledon churches with safely distanced congregations outdoors (which allows more people to attend). Communion will also take place at each service on Easter Day. If you would like to attend in person, please sign up using the event link below. Face coverings are required and singing is not permitted, but there will be hymns and music.
Children are very welcome, and the services will be family friendly, though they will be asked to stay close to their grownups throughout, and observe social distancing. (In present circumstances there will not be a creche or toy bags available). There will be Children’s Easter activities available on YouTube from 6AM on Easter Day for you to do anytime.
If you would like to help with welcoming and stewarding at either service (PLEASE!), contact Margot Spencer for Busbridge and Simon Willetts for Hambledon.
HOME Communion on Easter Day
The pastoral team will be offering Home Communion to those who can’t make it to the services on Easter Sunday. This will be done outside, in front gardens. If you would like a member of the pastoral team to visit and share communion with you or someone else, please email Jill Johnston e: pastoral@bhcgodalming.org.

Instead of a Mission Sunday this Easter, this year we are running a “Mission Month” during Lent. Our Easter Appeal is in aid of our mission partner charity, A Rocha UK. A Rocha UK is a Christian charity campaigning for the environment through number of activities. Please take time to read the Outward Giving Update which explains A Rocha UK’s activities and follow the instructions to make a donation. (Copies of the OG Update can be found at the back of Busbridge Church). To support the Easter Appeal, there is an eco thread to the Lent challenges which are being sent out on weekdays by text. Road Steward needed for The Bridge magazine for Shackstead Lane (numbers 2-26 only) and Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146, 111-125)
The Bridge magazine would like to thank Mary Keech for her time as a Road Steward for the upper part of Shackstead Lane. We’re very grateful to her for all her years of service. We’re now looking for someone who might be able to take over her patch of 14 houses (the Godalming College end of Shackstead Lane).
We’re also looking for a new Road Steward who, 6 times a year, would be willing to deliver magazines to 32 houses in Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146 & 111-125). If you live in, or close to this stretch, (or maybe know someone who does and might be willing to take on the role) please contact the editor, Cathy, at editor.atthebridge@gmail.com. We’d be delighted and most appreciative to hear from you.

News from our mission partner: The Cellar Camino Café – fundraising for a new coffee machine and till for lift off after lockdown!
The Cellar is on a fundraising drive to help lift off after lockdown. The move to the new premises next to the Borough Hall in July has been really positive, and The Cellar has done well on spiritual capital from staying open during the winter lockdowns. The café has had a good number of people for takeaways, hot meals on food vouchers put at the community food store, and much supportive pastoral work and street witness with prayer. With the new bigger and better venue, the management team want to buy a good and efficient coffee machine, and till to improve security and speed of use. Can you help? What to do next :-

Prime Time Lockdown Blog
Bible Reading Fellowship Lockdown stories: business as (un)usual for Prime Timers
Here’s an article Penny contributed to BRF online about her experience and thoughts of leading the Busbridge&Hambledon Seniors Ministry during the past year:
Join the National Day of Reflection | 23 March
Organised by Marie Curie, the National Day of Reflection looks to reflect on our collective loss, support those who’ve been bereaved, and hope for a brighter future.
We are tolling the Busbridge church bell at 12 noon today to mark the minutes silence.
You may like to use the CofE prayer card:
https://www.churchofengland.org/sites/default/files/2021-03/COFE_03015_DayofReflectionPostcard_AW.pdf
Other suggestions to mark the anniversary:
-
Encourage people to phone or send a card to anyone who may feel bereaved: Church of England research shows that 6 out of 10 adults have lost someone in the last year where they would have attended the funeral. 4 out of 10 say they have lost someone close to them.
-
Plant a seed, a bulb, a bush as a sign of hope.
-
Tie a yellow ribbons to a prayer tree or railings as a sign of their prayer and support for all who are bereaved.
-
Use the 8.00pm ‘share the light’ moment to light candles and lanterns in windows.
Reflect
Loving God,
You hold all our times in your hands, our past, our present, our future. Be close to us now as we remember all the difficulties and disappointments of the past year. Be especially close to all of us who are thinking of someone we loved and knew, but see no longer, whether family, friend, colleague or neighbour. Help us to trust that they are at peace with you, and comfort us with your presence.
Connect
Loving God,
You place us in families and communities, and we give you thanks for all those around us who serve us and help us in so many ways. Give wisdom to community leaders, to our schools, hospitals, care homes and other agencies who make a difference to our lives. Help each of us to have the courage to reach out with thanks and kindness to those around us and to speak words of faith as we share the good news of your love.
Hope
Loving God,
As we journey towards Easter, help us to live as people of hope, knowing that beyond the pain of the cross lies the joy of resurrection. Inspire us in our worship, through our churches and in our homes, that we may bring glory to you and joy to others. Be with those who are struggling in mind, body or spirit, and give courage to those who are facing uncertainty and change ahead. Help each of us to keep our eyes fixed on you, that we may reflect your light to all whom we meet.
Prayers
Dear God,
Be with us as we think about all that has changed this year,
And help us to trust that you are always with us.
Be close to us as we remember those who have died,
And help us to trust they are at peace with you.
Show us how to reach out to others with kindness and care,
So that hope shines out in every heart and home,
Amen
God of Love,
As we think about all that has changed this year,
help us to trust that you are always with us.
As we remember those who have died,
help us to trust they are at peace with you.
As we reach out to others with kindness and care,
may hope shine out in every heart and home.
Amen
Prime Time News
Dear Prime Time member,
I’ve called this email ‘Prime Time News’ just because there seems to be so much information to impart this week! So I think it best if I don’t say much else for now, so that you can focus on the important stuff!
This coming Tuesday, March 23rd sees the latest in our regular series of Lock Down Quiz events. Zoom in for a 2.30 start. Prime Time Team member Di Drudge will once again be our quiz master for afternoon, putting our little grey cells to the test in the way that only Di can, (usually with quite hilarious results!) Join us for an afternoon of fun; yes, it is a quiz – but we are careful never to take it too seriously and there will be plenty of laughter and chat along the way. New for this time – Di will offer participants a choice of topics on which to answer questions, so do come along and help influence what questions are posed. We plan to ‘level the playing field’ on this occasion too, so any households competing as a team of more than 1 will find that a small handicap is applied!
If you’re tempted by the thought of joining in, but are worried that your general knowledge might let you down, here are a few example questions from recent Prime Time quizzes (You’ll find the answers at the end of the email!)
1. The Titanic sank on 12th April of which year?
2. What is the capital of Portugal?
3. Which poet composed ‘To Autumn’, the 1819 poem which begins ‘Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’?
4. In which English town was ‘Fawlty Towers’ set?
5. Which ruler referred to the England as ‘A nation of shopkeepers’?
Hopefully you’re now thinking, “Yes, I can do this!” so here are the all-important joining instructions:
To join the quiz via your browser: https://zoom.us/j/9463914833
or type 946-391-4833 into the Zoom ‘join a Meeting’ window.
In both cases enter the password 2021 when asked.
The eagle-eyed amongst you will have spotted that this is exactly the same link as for the Thursday afternoon ‘Catch Up & Chat’ sessions. This is because both events take place in the BHC Public Zoom Room. So keep hold of this link once the quiz is over on Tuesday and join us again on Thursday afternoon anytime between 3.30 and 4pm for a chance to chat with your Prime Time team and other members. We had 12 people join us on Zoom yesterday afternoon which is our biggest turn-out to date. We had a very wide ranging discussion, from jigsaws and books to travelling in Iceland. Do put next Thursday afternoon in your diaries too and let’s see if we can achieve another record attendance!
Another topic of conversation during the ‘Catch Up & Chat’ session yesterday afternoon was the 2021 Census. Sunday March 21st is Census Day this year, which is only 2 days away now. Hopefully you have received a leaflet through your door explaining the process? If you haven’t dealt with it already, it’s time to dig that leaflet out again and follow the instructions. You don’t have to wait for Sunday in order to complete the Census form online; it can be done now if you are eager to get it ticked off your ‘to do’ list. I know we’re approaching Easter, but the Census always reminds me of Christmas. Thanks to school Nativity plays, children tend to get introduced to the concept of a Census at a very young age. And we continue to be reminded of that story every Christmas too, as Mary and Joseph’s journey to Bethlehem and the reason for it, is the point in the story at which we tend to start our Bible readings at the Prime Time Carol Service each year.
‘In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be registered. This was the first registration when Quirinius was governor of Syria. And all went to be registered, each to his own town. And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the town of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of David, to be registered with Mary, his betrothed, who was with child’. (Luke: 2, 1-5)
The Roman Census was key to the fulfilment of the prophecies which foretold the birth of a Saviour as it was this event that led Mary and Joseph, Jesus’ earthly parents to be in Bethlehem at the time of his birth, just as it was foretold in Micah: Chapter 5, verse 2.
“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah, though you are small among the clans of Judah, out of you will come for me one who will be ruler over Israel, whose origins are from of old, from ancient times.”
So as you complete your Census form on Sunday, maybe consider the importance of that Roman Census and how it influenced the bigger story playing out at the time; a story that had been foretold many centuries previously and which remains relevant in our lives today, especially during this season of Lent.
Looking ahead to Easter, which happily coincides with a further, (albeit small) lifting of some of the current Lock Down restrictions – there will continue to be online Sunday services, but in addition to what is online – for those that wish, on Easter Sunday we are inviting congregations back to worship in person at both Busbridge and Hambledon churches. The services will be held outdoors at both locations, as this enables more people to attend. Numbers will be limited to 100 at both sites, so there is a requirement to sign up ahead of the event. Please visit our website: www.bhcgodalming.org for details as to how to do this. The congregations will be safely distanced; face coverings are required and congregation singing is not permitted, but there will be hymns and music.
The pastoral team will be offering Home Communion to those who can’t make it to the services on Easter Sunday. This will be done outside, in front gardens. If you would like a member of the pastoral team to visit and share communion with you or someone else, please email Jill Johnston on: pastoral@bhcgodalming.org
In further news from in and around the church, I am sad to report that our friend and fellow Prime Time member Doris Borthwick died on Sunday evening. Until ill health prevented Doris from attending our events, Doris was a very regular face at Prime Time events where her smile and warm welcome for everybody lit up the room. We send our love and prayers to Doris’ family and her many friends as we do for the family and friends of Barbara Hubble who died last month. Barbara and her son Julian have been Prime Time members for a number of years; indeed, they have been associated with Prime Time for longer than I have! Julian would welcome any of Barbara’s Prime Time friends to join the service of thanksgiving for her life which is taking place at Clandon Wood on Thursday next week (March 25th) starting at midday. Due to the current restrictions on numbers, we will be joining the service virtually via the Clandon Wood livestream. If anyone would like the details of how to access the service for Barbara online, then please do get into contact with me and I will share them with you.
And finally, before I end off for this week – the request for items for the Prime Time Lock Down Yearbook has reached its third week. I revealed this week’s subject at yesterday’s ‘Catch Up & Chat’ session and I must say it generated a lot of interest, so I’m anticipating a flurry of activity in my inbox this week! What I’m asking for this week are reflections on the TV programmes that you’ve been watching during Lock Down. What are the TV programmes that have helped to get you through the last 12 months? For me it was ‘The Great British Sewing Bee’ during Lock Down number 1, ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ during the second Lock Down and most recently, ‘The Great British Dig’ has helped get me through the last few weeks during Lock Down #3. Does anyone else share the same viewing tastes as me? Quite possibly not, so do tell me what you’ve been watching over the past year. You could just send me a couple of lines containing the titles of the programmes, or you can go into detail about the programmes and send me a bit more than two lines. I really don’t mind, but it would be great to see if we can spot some trends.
Television isn’t everyone’s thing; so instead, perhaps there’s a book that you’ve read during Lock Down that you’d like to recommend to other Prime Time members? I’d be delighted to receive a few book reviews, (long or short) that we can include in our memories of this last year.
So lots to think about this next week:
1. Sunday March 21st – Census day
2. Tuesday March 23rd – Prime Time Quiz on Zoom starting at 2.30pm
3. Thursday March 25th – Barbara Hubble’s funeral (online) starting at midday
4. Thursday March 25th – Prime Time ‘Catch Up & Chat’ session on Zoom starting at 3.30pm
5. Any day – Send Penny TV and Book reviews for inclusion into the Year Book.
May God continue to watch over and protect you and those whom you love over the coming week.
Until next Friday,
Penny x
PS: The answers to the quiz questions are as follows:
1. 1912
2. Lisbon
3. John Keats
4. Torquay
5. Napoleon Bonaparte

Wait for breakfast / skip a meal today
…make space in your day for God / and consider those less fortunate than you.
Fasting is fashionable again (!), with lots of nutritionists and health gurus expounding the benefits of fasting and “intermittent” fasting (12, 14 or 16 hours overnight) to boost our immune systems and self healing, and as an antidote to over consumption!
Funny, it’s forever been part of biblical teaching and discipleship, not for weight loss or physical health (though no doubt God meant that for us as well), but as a way of refocusing ourselves on what’s important.

David Preece licensing at Saxmundham: 6PM on 22 March
Dave and Hannah have sent an invitation to Dave’s licensing via Zoom.
Zoom: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/2907979571. No password needed.
Dave writes: It’ll be as pared back as possible (pretty much just the legal necessities) as we’re planning a bigger celebration of ministry with friends, family, and food in the future when restrictions allow. They would love to “see” their Busbridge and Hambledon family there too.
Busbridge Church Centre Redevelopment
We are delighted that the Busbridge Church drop in coffee space in the church centre for our church ministry, toddler groups, older people… so many people! is inching towards happening. We’re grateful to the team who have got it this far over the past 18 months, and to the new people who have stepped forward in the last couple of weeks to be part of the short term ‘delivery’ team to lead on organising the fit out and getting the ministry up and running – Michael Stubbs (the new Chair), Karen Hart, and Martin Lambert and David Burndred on finance. If you are interested in being involved, contact Michael Stubbs via the church office.
Services at Busbridge Church and Hambledon Church from 11 April
That’s right! We plan for services to be back in both churches from 11 April, AND broadcast live. The Classic service at Busbridge and the Heritage service at Hambledon will remain at 9AM. The Contemporary Conversations service will also move into Busbridge Church, and start at the slightly later time of 10.30AM. Those attending will need to sign up and wear a face covering, and listen to the worship. Unfortunately we have been advised by the diocese that physical youth and children’s groups can not restart until 17 May at the earliest, so the Ark, Explorers, Pathfinders and Ichthus will continue on Zoom for the time being.
For answers to some of the FAQs we have received, see “Ask a Simon”.
We are sad to hear of the death of Doris Borthwick on Sunday 14 March, aged 94. She was a much-loved member of our Classic congregation for a number of years until the pandemic and ill-health prevented her from coming. Please pray for Ailsa and John, and also for Libby, who has cared for both Doris and Oswin so faithfully. Pray for God’s love and peace to be with them all. It is too soon for funeral arrangements to be known, but we will let you have a link to the service in due course.
We also send our love to Richard Cooke, whose mother died last week. Please pray for Richard, Liz and the wider family, for God’s peace and comfort to surround them.
Following the sad news that Barbara Hubble died on 12 February, we now have the details for the funeral to be held on Thursday 25 March at 12 noon. https://youtu.be/5Fk2NhrWIRA. Please email this link to anyone who you would like to invite to attend the funeral in a virtual capacity.
