Services at Busbridge Church and Hambledon Church from 25 April
Services are back in both churches AND broadcast live on YouTube. The Contemporary Conversations service has moved into Busbridge Church, and starts at the slightly later time of 10.30AM. Communion (bread only) will take place on 1st Sundays of the month in the 9AM Busbridge Classic service, and on 3rd Sundays in the 9AM Hambledon Heritage service. Those attending are asked to SIGN UP and wear a FACE COVERING. Singing is not permitted in church, but is allowed outdoors (with face coverings).
Can you help?
Complete the quick post-lockdown survey about services – please!
Then
“Roll up, roll up!”… To restart, sustain and keep step with easing restrictions, we now need to recall the army of volunteers that served on Sundays and in all ministries pre 2020!
The most pressing need in the coming weeks is for WELCOMERS at all 3 services (Busbridge and Hambledon). We can’t meet our COVID safety procedures (setting up the hygiene station, signing people in, encouraging hands, face and space) without a committed team of Welcomers.
-
For those attending Hambledon who’d like to get involved with the roles of ‘welcoming’, ‘reading’ and ‘intercessors’ please get in touch with Fran (fran.duffell@bhcgodalming.org) this week.
-
Welcomers are also needed for services at Busbridge – please contact margot.spencer@bhcgodalming.org.
CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES. Having been advised that it would be 17 May before groups could meet, the advice (government and diocese) changed this week to Go! Go! (COVID safely, of course). Quick off the blocks, Ichthus met on Tuesday and ABC toddlers will restart next Tuesday. Explorers is ready to go, but Tiny Tigers, Ark and Pathfinders await helpers to run their sessions.
Lack of leaders, coupled with the short term challenge of restricted numbers in our modestly sized church buildings, have inspired plans to run a service for families with 0-11s in the OR gardens at 10.30AM (alongside the Contemporary service). This would be a fully active “Muddy Church”. At least one parent or guardian will need to stay with their children and take part in the fun. We aim to start this on Sunday 9 May, so watch the notices next week. (While this will ease the need for leaders in the short-term, we still need as many as possible involved to lead in different age groups).
SOUND & VISION. We still need more people on the tech and production team to ensure amazing (i.e. worship enhancing but unobtrusive) sound and vision in the churches as well as via YouTube. Good training will be provided and the skill is highly transferable! Watch the promo below, and contact Jacob if you would like to find out more.
Racial Justice
This week has seen a number of high profile items in the news regarding cases of Racial Injustice. Many of you will have seen the Panorama programme on Monday asking the question ‘ Is the Church racist?’ On Tuesday evening we heard the news of the guilty verdict in the George Floyd murder trial and on Thursday the report of the Church of England Anti-Racism Taskforce came out.
As a Benefice we have a Racial Justice Group as part of our PCC. We are appalled by the level of racism that the Panorama programme exposed and are committed to rooting out racism in the church. The Diocese has a Racial Justice Group looking at how we can tackle the issue in the Guildford Diocese and they have posted a response to the Panorama programme on the diocesan website – do look at it.
Do get in touch with one of us if you have concerns you wish us to address with reference to our benefice.

Webinars to prepare for the Archbishop’s to visit to Guildford Diocese in September – 26 & 28 April
This invitation is for anyone with a heart for evangelism and/or would like to know more about a unique visit here by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
Next week’s webinars will provide guidance on how parishes can participate in the mission to Guildford Diocese to be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury from 24-27 September. It is being run twice: on Monday 26 and Wednesday 28 April, both at 8pm.
This is a really exciting opportunity. The weekend of the Archbishop’s visit will include large guest events across the diocese at which Archbishop Justin will launch evangelism courses, like Alpha and Pilgrim.
The webinar is for clergy and laity, especially those in your parish with a heart for local outreach who might take leading roles. Speakers include Chris Russell, Archbishop’s Advisor on Evangelism, John McGinley from the Archbishop’s College of Evangelists, Peter Harwood, Director of Mission, and David Senior, Coordinator of the Archbishop’s Mission. At the next meeting Margaret Jackson will give us some insights into the roles of women in the Crimean War, with tales from some who were there. It should be a fascinating presentation about a war which started in 1853 to uphold the rights of Christian minorities in the Holy Land. This will be a free Zoom meeting starting at 8.00pm, but you’re invited to join from 7.45pm so you’ll have a chance to chat with others. We look forward to seeing you!

Hello from Prime Time after a momentous week!
Dear Prime Time member,
Hasn’t it been a momentous week? The news about the Duke of Edinburgh which, although shouldn’t have been entirely unexpected, still came as a shock. Listening to his life story, I myself had not realised how much he had sacrificed in the early years of his marriage; normally expecting twenty years of so having a ‘normal ‘ life and career, but instead taking on very quickly the full-time roll of Queen’s consort. I learned a lot about him that I had not known or had known but forgotten! I expect this may bring back memories for you too, some poignant some peaceful, of loved ones lost; either recently or in times past. It’s times like these we really miss hugs from families and friends. I pray that God’s love will sustain you all.
Di’s letter last week was suggesting we remember things in our past, invoked through sights, sounds and smells. I suppose my favourite would be the smell of new mown grass, reminding me of caravan holidays in the Lake District. But my very earliest memory is of sitting in a tin bath in front of the fire. Did you have one of those? Then we progressed to a weekly bath in an upstairs bathroom, but only one filling of water for all of us. I was third in line! And yes, old newspapers came in handy…… well, we did come from Yorkshire. The latest loo roll shortage didn’t faze me a bit.
Di and I have obviously got a lot in common. I also got married in 1969 and watched the moon landing actually on our honey ‘moon’ on the hotel television. I also made my blue bridesmaids dresses on an old treadle machine in the basement of the YWCA I lived in at the time; and ironed them with one of those flat irons that you only see now in the servant’s quarters of National Trust houses.
Now, can anyone visualise Di as a cowgirl? Well, that gave me a chuckle. The nearest memory I can get to that is having a crush on Hopalong Cassidy, a goody two shoes cowboy on TV in about the fifties. Does anyone remember him? I saved for ages to buy his annual. Can anyone remember the name of his horse? Mind you, he did have a very deep sexy voice. (Hopalong, not the horse).
I asked husband for his earliest recollection, and found out he doesn’t even remember getting married (which I can assure him we did!)
It’s been lovely going down Memory Lane but I just wish my short term memory was as good! All those jokes about going upstairs and forgetting what you had gone up for are no longer funny!
Lockdown is gradually starting to ease, the weather is warming up and we must find the courage to emerge and start living again. I must admit I haven’t found Penny’s seven daisies yet, although I have seen seven snowflakes, and lots of bright cheerful daffodils. Zoom has been invaluable, but I can’t wait to start meeting you all again. I hope you feel the same.
Keep going. We are nearly there!
With love and many blessings,

Unification of the Ecclesiastical Parishes of Busbridge and Hambledon – update on the proposal
NOTICE of Hambledon PCC Meeting 20 April to discuss the matter above, and invitation to those on the electoral roll to attend.
Thank you for those that fed back about the proposal to unify the Ecclesiastical Parishes of Busbridge and Hambledon. All comments were in support of the proposal but with some points of clarification concerning three of the caveats:
1. That a clergy house (in the village) and a minister would be safeguarded for the future.
2. Finances can be restricted as per the wishes of the donor. i.e. Strictly for Hambledonian purposes if desired: in practice the means:
· One parish would mean one ‘pot’ from which all costs of the parish would be paid.
· Donors to either church would be free to restrict their giving for specific purposes (just as they are now) e.g. Hambledon fabric, Minister’s salary, etc.
· Absent specific instructions all gifts including collections would be treated as unrestricted (just as they are in other parishes made up of two or more churches) meaning such money would go into the parish ‘pot’ from which all parish costs would be paid.
· It is the job of Hambledon PCC to discuss all ideas and options and set any terms or conditions of merger. A question remains how a new single PCC should be made up (relevant to the next bullet point) but will obviously have representatives from both Busbridge and Hambledon.
· Going forward it would be the job of a single parish PCC to set the parish budget each year.
3. Worship in the village would kept under the control of the Rector, Hambledon’s Associate Vicar and the elected PCC. (All set within the wider parameters of the Church of England)
The caveats in the unification proposal specifically address these issues and these can and will be safeguarded as the process develops.
The Hambledon PCC are meeting 20th April at 19:30 on Zoom to vote. Any member of the electoral roll is welcome to attend and observe but will not be eligible to speak or vote.
Yours Faithfully
Rev Simon Willetts

God Bless you all, we will miss you. David and Linda

Bell Tolls for Duke of Edinburgh, and Prayers for Royal Family at Hambledon Church
Bell Tolls for Duke of Edinburgh, and Prayers for Royal Family
The bell at St Peter’s Church, Hambledon, tolled 99 times yesterday in remembrance of the life of the Duke of Edinburgh, who died on Friday.
Today (Sunday April 11th) prayers were said for the Royal Family at the 9am service, which ended with the congregation assembling outside to sing the National Anthem.
Derek Miller was the bell ringer at midday yesterday as Hambledon associate vicar Simon Willetts and a small number of villagers gathered outside to witness the occasion.

Bell Tolls for Duke of Edinburgh, and Prayers for Royal Family. A limited number of worshipers are allowed inside the church under the recent relaxation of Coronavirus restrictions and Simon said he wanted to share with villagers prayers for the Queen and other members of the Royal Family as they mourn the passing of Prince Philip, who was 99.
The 9am service is open to those who register their wish to attend on the Busbridge and Hambledon Churches website here: https://www.bhcgodalming.org/
Services are also streamed on line and details can be found by clicking on the same link.
in Hambledon, tributes have been paid by our vicar, MP and Parish Council chairman. Under current Government Coronavirus guidelines, a physical Book of Condolence is not allowed. An on-line one is to be made available. Details can be found here: https://www.royal.uk/.
The Union Jack is flying at half-mast at St Peter’s Church. Tomorrow (Saturday April 10th) the church bell will be rung 99 times, beginning at 12 noon. Villagers are welcome to attend but must remain outside and observe 2 metre distancing.
Simon Willetts, associate vicar of Hambledon, said: “On behalf of the parish of St. Peter’s, we are deeply saddened by the news of the death of His Royal Highness Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. We offer our condolences to Her Majesty The Queen and her family. We are holding them all in our prayers, may he rest in peace and rise in glory.”
Jeremy Hunt, MP for South West Surrey and a Hambledon resident, said: “Today all of us are feeling a special sense of sadness following the loss of the Duke of Edinburgh. He personified a sense of duty which made us proud of the Royal Family and proud to be British. He sacrificed his own ambition as a promising Royal Navy officer to dedicate himself to a life of service at the Queen’s side and her wonderful longevity is in no small part thanks to his unstinting support. We remember Her Majesty on this sad day and will hold her and her family in our thoughts and prayers.”
John Anderson, chairman of Hambledon Parish Council, said: “It is with great sadness that we learnt today of the death of HRH Prince Philip the Duke of Edinburgh. Prince Phillip was a man who has always served our country loyally with devotion to duty and has supported Her Majesty the Queen throughout her reign.
As consort he has carried out his role with good grace and good humour in his own inimitable way. Our thoughts and prayers are with Her Majesty and all her family at this very sad time.”
For other village information following the death of the Duke of Edinburgh, please see previous news stories on this website, including how to sign the official Book of Condolence.

We are remembering HRH Prince Philip
We are remembering HRH Prince Philip. The bells at both Busbridge and Hambledon church were tolled 99 times at 6PM on 9 April, once for every year of his life. You can submit a message to the public online book of condolence, and access prayers and liturgy, at
https://www.churchofengland.org/remembering-his-royal-highness-prince-philip.
We will be paying tribute to and praying for HRH Prince Philip, the Queen and the royal family at our Sunday services 9AM at Hambledon, and 10.30AM at Busbridge.

Happy Easter from Prime Time
Dear Prime Time member,
Well here we are already on the second day of the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. Although the past three months may at times have felt dull and dreary while we’ve been confined to barracks due to the most recent Lock Down; I know I’m not alone in thinking that, in many ways, the time seems actually to have passed quite quickly. I’m not sure that it feels as though more than three months have passed since we celebrated Christmas. Even though the Christmas festivities were more muted than usual last year, the occasion definitely was marked; but in my mind it doesn’t feel as though more than a quarter of a year has passed since we were singing carols and opening presents. But the calendar assures me that this is so. We passed the Spring Equinox on March 20th which heralds the astrological first day of Spring and last weekend the clocks went forward signalling the start of British Summer Time. And although according to the weather forecast, temperatures are set to plummet in the next couple of days which will have the effect of making it feel as though we are still in the depths of winter; this last week we’ve had a few days when the mercury rose higher than it sometimes does in the height of summer!
According to an article I read this week however, there is yet another measure by which we can declare spring has (or hasn’t!) arrived; because according to ancient lore, spring has only arrived when you can fit seven daisy flowers under your foot. A quick scan of our lawn at home shows it to be completely devoid of daisy flowers; there isn’t one let alone seven in a space small enough to be covered by my foot print! So from that, are we to surmise that spring hasn’t yet arrived in this part of south-east England?!?
The easing of Lock Down restrictions and the hope brought by the vaccine roll-out feel something akin to spring at the end of a long, hard winter brought about by the pandemic. As we look to the future with renewed hope that the worst of the pandemic may at last be behind us, I am reminded of a verse from the Song of Solomon; Chapter 2, Verses 11-12;
‘For behold, the winter is past; the rain is over and gone. The flowers appear on the earth, the time of singing has come…
And as a church family, we will be actively singing tomorrow for the first time in more than a year as we gather together (outside) for our Easter Day services. Both services are now fully booked to attend in person, but please do join us online via our YouTube channel. The links to the services are easy to find on the Homepage of our website: www.bhcgodalming.org The service from Hambledon starts at 9am, while the one at Busbridge is a little later – 10.15am. Both can be watched live, or viewed later in their recorded form.
Our Rector Simon writes: ‘We’re waiting for the end to restrictions, distance relationships and lack of community and the end of this phase of the amazing vaccine effort but as a Christian I know that there is another ending. It is the ending longed for in Scripture across generations and it is the defeat of the darkness of evil. The ending which arrives at Easter is the resurrection of Jesus… There is hope for tomorrow and in it I invite you to remember that yours is a precious God given life. Easter means the waiting is over and we have a new life to live which takes us to the end of time’.
Easter and Spring are full of symbolism pointing to ‘new beginnings’ and ‘new life’, none more so than the tradition of the chocolate eggs which are now synonymous with Easter. This Easter it has not been possible for BHC to host its annual Easter Egg Hunt in the gardens of the Old Rectory. However, so as not to leave the younger members of our community disappointed for the second year running, my colleagues in the Children, Youth and Families Team have devised Easter Egg Treasure Hunts in both Busbridge and Hambledon which can be completed at any time in the next two weeks. So if you have grandchildren visiting during the Easter holidays for their permitted ‘garden visits’ or you have neighbours with young children, do tell them about the BHC Easter Egg Treasure Hunts. Treasure Hunt flyers can be picked up from the porches at both churches and further details can be found on our website: https://www.bhcgodalming.org/cyf-easter-egg-hunt where you will also find a promotional video which fully explains how this Egg Hunt works. Even if you don’t know any young children, it’s worth watching the video for sheer entertainment value and to marvel at the ingenuity of my colleagues! (You will also be introduced to Sheepy who has become something of a local internet sensation over the past year with the very youngest members of our church family).
I’ll be taking a bit of a break for the next two weeks as it is the school holidays; but fear not – your weekly Prime Time email will still be arriving regularly in your inbox courtesy of the lovely volunteers on the Prime Time Team. On my return from leave, I will begin compiling the Prime Time Lock Down Year Book, so if you have any further contributions, please do get them to me either via email or post over the next couple of weeks. My final suggestion for things that could be included in the Year Book are personal reflections from the past year. What has the last year meant to you? Has it been frustration after frustration or have there been some positives to come out of the experience as well? What have you learnt about yourself or the world? What have you discovered you’re capable of? If a future generation was to face a worldwide pandemic, what advice would you give to them? In your opinion what lessons need to be learned? A copy of our Year Book will be stored in the church archive. What words about the pandemic of 2020 would you like to speak out of the pages of our Lock Down Year Book? This is your opportunity to have your voice recorded for posterity – so please don’t hold back. I look forward to reading what you come up with.
It just remains for me to wish you a peaceful and peace-filled Easter and the extra joy that the easing of some of the Lock Down restrictions may bring.
Until next time,
Penny x

Easter Appeal for A Rocha UK—Caring for God’s Earth

Instead of a Mission Sunday this Easter, this year we are running a “Mission Month” during Lent. Our Easter Appeal is in aid of our mission partner charity, A Rocha UK. A Rocha UK is a Christian charity campaigning for the environment through number of activities. Please take time to read the Outward Giving Update which explains A Rocha UK’s activities and follow the instructions to make a donation. (Copies of the OG Update can be found at the back of Busbridge Church). To support the Easter Appeal, there is an eco thread to the Lent challenges which are being sent out on weekdays by text. Catch up on this week’s challenges (see below).
‘Meeting the world right here in Surrey!’ – Nexus Talk, Thursday 8th April
Louise Baumberg will talk to us on ‘Meeting the world right here in Surrey!’ Louise has worked with refugees, mainly young people who have arrived alone, as a foster carer and, more recently, as a caseworker with Big Leaf Foundation. This charity supports displaced young people in Surrey.
Do come along and find out about the challenges and achievements of this diverse group of individuals living in our community. It may give you a fresh perspective on life, and all the things we take for granted.
This will be a free Zoom meeting starting at 8.00pm, but you’re invited to join from 7.45pm so you can chat with others. We look forward to seeing you!

Road Steward needed for The Bridge magazine for Shackstead Lane (numbers 2-26 only) and Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146, 111-125)
The Bridge magazine would like to thank Mary Keech for her time as a Road Steward for the upper part of Shackstead Lane. We’re very grateful to her for all her years of service. We’re now looking for someone who might be able to take over her patch of 14 houses (the Godalming College end of Shackstead Lane).
We’re also looking for a new Road Steward who, 6 times a year, would be willing to deliver magazines to 32 houses in Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146 & 111-125). If you live in, or close to this stretch, (or maybe know someone who does and might be willing to take on the role) please contact the editor, Cathy, at editor.atthebridge@gmail.com. We’d be delighted and most appreciative to hear from you.

News from our mission partner: The Cellar Camino Café – fundraising for a new coffee machine and till for lift off after lockdown!
The Cellar is on a fundraising drive to help lift off after lockdown. The move to the new premises next to the Borough Hall in July has been really positive, and The Cellar has done well on spiritual capital from staying open during the winter lockdowns. The café has had a good number of people for takeaways, hot meals on food vouchers put at the community food store, and much supportive pastoral work and street witness with prayer. With the new bigger and better venue, the management team want to buy a good and efficient coffee machine, and till to improve security and speed of use. Can you help? What to do next :-
Contact Chris Jagger for more information 01483 415334 | chrisjagger42@gmail.com Donate via our website www.thecellarcafe.co.uk or use the web site to set up a standing order to support the ongoing work of the Cellar.
