Changes to Hambledon Services from 13 June
It’s great news that the Heritage Service will now start at the slightly more comfortable time of 9.30AM (at church and on YouTube), and will now be followed by an informal contemporary service at 10.30AM (in person only). In due course there may be coffee and band-led worship at this service, but for now the format is fairly fluid and evolving. On 4 and 17 July the congregation plans to meet on Hambledon Village green to worship alongside the junior cricket match!
Sign up now for the Saturday Summer Blitz Clear up morning on 26 June
10-12AM Busbridge with BBQ 12-1PM
[A similar event will be rescheduled at Hambledon if required]
This is a family event- CHILDREN WELCOME & will be put to “work”!
The traditional Big Spring Clean will be a marginally swifter “summer blitz” to strike off some tidying and maintenance jobs, but more importantly draw people alongside each other and enjoy the coffee break and a lunch together. Please contact the church office to let us know you are coming, or sign up on the web site. Liz will be putting you into teams according to your age and task preference, but we need your willingness and availability ASAP. THE BEST JOB (the BBQ lunch) is now taken, but if you’d like to help the Taylors, please let us know!
BHC Outward Giving – MISSION SUNDAY 27 June – In Aid of TEARFUND India Coronavirus Appeal
The OG group writes: We are so fortunate in this country. More than half the population has been vaccinated, many of us have received second doses with few ill effects, and things are at long last beginning to open up. Compare the situation in India. Deaths from coronavirus are among the highest in the world. Having congratulated themselves on having controlled the pandemic last year the country has in recent months experienced a spiralling outbreak. Cities were locked down in response, and labourers within the cities returned to their villages miles away in the countryside, taking the virus with them.
We have seen on our television/computer screens the distressing images of people queuing to get into hospitals, dying while awaiting treatment, shortages of oxygen, ventilators, not to mention of doctors and nurses. And we wonder: it’s so far away, how does this affect us? Because, as Jesus said in the parable of the Good Samaritan, they are our neighbours. And we are in addition told that until the whole world has been cleared of coronavirus none of us is safe from it, vaccine or no vaccine. And, many of the vaccines we receive are made in India!
It’s time for us to show our compassion and our gratitude. Gift-aided envelopes are available at all services in time for our Mission Sunday on 27 June. Donations can also be made to the BHC appeal online, or via the Tearfund web site directly.
Tearfund have produced a 4-minute video which gives a message of hope, that people in India will get through this with their usual resilience and that recovery will come. But they do need our help now!

Thank you to

…everyone who either gathered in person last Sunday evening at 7pm or prayed in your homes, cars, sheds or where-ever else you find space for prayer. We had over 70 people ‘in person’ combined at Busbridge and Hambledon; praying for revival of faith in God in ourselves, the church and the whole community; praying for Hambledon Church and taking its place in the future of the village.
… the amazing volunteer and staff team who have been putting the outdoor children’s worship together (10.30am, Sundays at Busbridge). Last Sunday there were more children there than there were adults in the main church building! And it was pouring with rain.
…all our Welcomers! We would like to say a Big ‘THANK YOU’ to all who are helping with the contemporary service on Sundays. We would particularly like to thank Sue, Sally, Dawn, Matt, Jackie, David, Sandra, Esther and Patrick for helping with the Welcome, without our Welcomers (because of Track and Trace requirements), we would not be able to have people in church for the services. Thank you so much for responding to our plea. There are still some Sundays, when we need Welcomers to help, if you would like to know details about the role, please do talk to the Welcomers on Sundays or contact Patrick Samuels for Contemporary and France Shaw for Classic. Thank you!

Nexus is thrilled to be planning its first gathered in person event for over a year! 😊 On Thursday 3rd June Nexus have arranged a private walk around the lovely NGS Spurfold garden, near Peaslake, meeting there at 6.30pm. The garden has extensive herbaceous and shrub borders, a sunken gravel garden, topiary, water features, glorious azaleas, and more!! And some surprising sculptures! It all sounds delightful!
The cost for the evening is £12, to include garden entrance and ‘al fresco’ drinks and nibbles. Numbers are restricted so, if you would like to join us, please email Pam on pamcookney@gmail.com as soon as possible so we can give numbers to the venue. Hopefully, it will be a warm sunny evening for us to enjoy this beautiful garden.

Contact the church office if you’d like to help.

Hello from Prime Time!
Dear Prime Time member,
The sun may be shining but it’s not exactly warm is it? I’ve just been chatting with my colleague Liz, who reminded me that this time last year we were enjoying something of a heatwave. So would I prefer to be in the warmth and sunshine of spring 2020 but with the prospect of a further twelve months of the pandemic dominating our lives, or would I rather be where we are now; somewhat cooler (and damper!) but with a real sense of optimism that we may now be permanently emerging from the shadow of Covid? I think I’ll take the latter; unsettled weather and all…
By May, I am usually adapting the menu in the Naylor household; switching warming comfort food for lighter salads more appropriate for the late spring weather. However, at the moment I am still reaching for the casserole recipes and dessert is more likely to be rice pudding than fresh fruit salad!
A bowl of rice pudding is one of those memorable childhood staples; a once a week treat, eagerly anticipated. As a child, my topping of choice was a dollop of jam, preferably red in colour, the flavour being less important. As my tastes have matured, however, I would now reach for the tin of Golden Syrup rather than the jar of jam.
Lyle’s Golden Syrup is a store cupboard staple. Those green and golden tins are so familiar to us and indeed this iconic product holds the Guinness World Record for the World’s Oldest Unchanged Brand Packaging. We would probably say that we are all familiar with what a tin of Lyle’s Golden Syrup looks like; “It’s green and gold with a lion on the front isn’t it?” Well, yes – but how closely have you actually looked at that lion? I was reading a recent article in the Waitrose Food magazine and I was surprised to learn that the lion on the front of the Lyle’s Golden Syrup can is actually a dead lion and it’s swarming with bees! Furthermore, a tin of Lyle’s Golden Syrup bears a biblical reference; who’d have thought it?! I’m probably by now speaking to myself as I’m sensing that it’s likely you’ve stopped reading and are heading to the kitchen cupboard to hunt out the tin of Golden Syrup that’s lurking there, just to see what on earth I’m talking about!
Below the image of the lion on the front of the tin is the wording: ‘Out of the strong came forth sweetness’ which is a reference to Samson’s riddle which comes from the Book of Judges: Chapter 14, verse 14.
The Israelite Samson (he of the strength-giving hair, later betrayed by Delilah) on his wedding day sets a riddle to a group of Philistine men, with the aim of getting one over on his long-standing enemies. If the men could solve the riddle, Samson would reward them handsomely; but if they failed to work out the riddle’s meaning – the men would have to reward Samson to the same degree. As the riddle was based on a personal experience of Samson’s and of which he had told no-one, the riddle should have been impossible for the men to solve.
Shortly before his marriage, while walking along the road, Samson had been attacked by a lion. Using the strength gifted to him by the Lord, Samson was able to overcome the lion with his bare hands and killed it, leaving the carcass beside the road. The next time Samson journeyed along that stretch of road, he noticed that a colony of bees had made its home in the carcass and that they were producing honey. It was this incident that Samson used as the basis for his riddle:
‘Out of the eater, something to eat; out of the strong something sweet’.
I’m not going to provide a spoiler by saying how the story ends, but if you would like to top up your knowledge of Samson beyond that of his ill-fated alliance with Delilah, then Chapter 14 of Judges is a short and easy read.
Abram Lyle was a deeply religious man. In the article I read he was described as ‘a man so pious he once said he’d rather his son be dead than drunk’. Why Golden Syrup cans bear the reference to Samson’s riddle is unclear. There have been suggestions that ‘Out of the strong came forth sweetness’ is a reference to the strength of Lyle’s business, while others have said it is a reference to the strong container in which the product is sold. Alternatively, maybe this was a favourite Bible verse of Abram Lyle; we are perhaps destined to never know…
What is certain though is that the existence of Lyle’s Golden Syrup is a happy accident. Golden Syrup is actually a by-product of the sugar-cane refining process, which in the 1880s was Lyle’s sugar-cane refinery’s primary business. ‘Goldie’ as it was originally known was first sold in 1881, mainly to the employees of the sugar-cane refinery where it was served up to the workers out of wooden casks. The iconic tin came two years later in 1883 when Lyle expanded the business and began selling his Golden Syrup to local grocers, and the rest is (very successful) history…
Who would have thought that something so familiar to us as a can of Golden Syrup could be so interesting? Facts like this fascinate me and I seem to have a bank of such trivia stored up in my head to wheel out when needed! I’m definitely of the opinion that ‘one is never too old to learn’. I look forward to the Prime Time quizzes because invariably I come away with a few extra tit-bits of knowledge that I didn’t have before. I know that I am not alone in this knowledge-gathering habit as we have a loyal group of members who regularly tune in to the virtual quizzes that Di has been preparing for us throughout the last year.
By popular request there is another Quiz date for your diaries; a little over two weeks away. We will be back on Zoom on Tuesday 25th May for the next session of the popular Prime Time Quiz. Proceedings will start at 2.30pm. If you haven’t joined one of our quizzes before, please do give it a try – we would love to have you with us. We have four ten-question rounds; the theme of which at the last quiz were Royalty, Science, Colours and Food. The main focus is on having fun and enjoying the time spent with friends, so there is as much laughter as there is head-scratching! Joining details will be included in the weekly email on the Friday before the event.
One last notice before I end off and leave you to go and dig out your tin of Golden Syrup (if you haven’t done so already!) Last week, the funeral took place of Prime Time member Doris Borthwick. Doris’ funeral service was Live Streamed at the time for the benefit of those who were unable to attend the service in person. Doris’ daughter has given her permission for the recording of the service to remain available for people to watch and draw comfort from if they were unable to watch the live broadcast. If you would like to view Doris’ funeral service, it is available on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWua9wgZGOSAIOK8xTj1FPg
We also send our love to the family and friends of Prime Time member Nora Kennea whose funeral service was held at Busbridge Church on Tuesday this week. Our thoughts and prayers are particularly with Nora’s husband Trevor, who is also a long standing member of Busbridge Church and himself a member of Prime Time.
Hopefully by the time I write next week, the temperature will have risen by a few degrees again and it will feel as though spring has returned. In the meantime, stay warm by tucking into rice pudding with Golden Syrup! (Hopefully Waitrose won’t now sell out!)
Until next Friday,

You are called to reconnect in worship and prayer in Busbridge and Hambledon churchyards, when we will be able to enjoy sung worship and prayer ministry together. The theme for Busbridge will be REVIVAL, and at Hambledon DISCERNMENT!
Select the events above to sign up to the Worship and Prayer evenings. Please wear a face covering, and bring a chair if you’d like to sit rather than stand.
The Notices
Next Thursday is Ascension Day (13 May)
We will join Godalming Churches Together for a service to be held at at St John’s, Farncombe at 5.30PM. There’s plenty of space available. No need to sign up.
APCMs on 23 May: ‘Quality – God’s future for us’ ON ZOOM & AT CHURCH
The prayer evenings will prepare us for the APCMs the following Sunday which will follow the abridged morning services:
9AM Heritage followed by the APCM at 9.30AM
10.30AM Busbridge Combined Morning Worship with the APCM starting at 10.45AM (The Family Garden service will take place at 10.30AM for those with children aged 0-11, so if 2 parents are coming to church it’s possible for one to attend the APCM either on Zoom or in church).
Please do come along to the appropriate APCM and find out about the year gone, and what’s to come. The Annual Report and Accounts for 2020 will be available next week.

Fancy a break from working from home? Please contact Patrick Samuels if you would be interested in sharing a workspace in the Old Rectory during school hours on Mondays or Thursdays once restrictions permit. Power, Wi-Fi and tea/coffee making facilities available. This might offer the chance for a change of scenery, some interaction with others and an optional prayer and reflection time at 12 noon. patrick.samuels@bhcgodalming.org.
We send much love and huge congratulations to our lovely June Higgins, who celebrates a significant birthday this coming week. 11 May 1931 must have been a very special day, and we wish June a blessed and joyful day of celebration with her family.

Christian Aid week 10-16 May. In the absence of door to door collections again this year, it’s even more important that we support by donating online, joining the local quiz or the sponsored challenge to make 300,000 steps during May! More details.
-
Friends International UK – one of our mission partners which is featured in the latest Outward Giving Update. Friends international is a Christian charity seeking to grow friendship and faith with international students in the UK & Ireland. Over 450,000 international students study at UK universities and some 550,000 come to study English in language schools. FI wants to give students a great time in the UK, chances to experience real local culture, and opportunities to hear the Christian message. Our activities are open to those of all faiths and none.

The Bridge
We are still seeking a new road steward for Shackstead Lane (numbers 2-26 only) and Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146, 111-125)
We’re looking for someone who might be able to deliver magazines to 14 houses (the Godalming College end of Shackstead Lane). And we’re also looking for a new road steward who, 6 times a year, would be willing to deliver magazines to 32 houses in Busbridge Lane (numbers 106-146 & 111-125).
If you live in, or close to these stretches, (or maybe know someone who does and might be willing to take on the role) please contact the editor, Cathy, at editor.atthebridge@gmail.com. We’d be delighted and most appreciative to hear from you.
Sundays
To restart, sustain and keep step with easing restrictions, we now need to recall the army of volunteers that served on Sundays and in all ministries pre 2020!
The most pressing need in the coming weeks is for WELCOMERS at all 3 services (Busbridge and Hambledon). We can’t meet our COVID safety procedures (setting up the hygiene station, signing people in, encouraging hands, face and space) without a committed team of Welcomers. Contact the church office if you’d like to help.
CHILDREN, YOUTH & FAMILIES
Tiny Tigers, Ark and Pathfinders await helpers to come forward to run their sessions. A need for helpers coupled with the short term challenge of restricted numbers in our modestly sized church buildings, have inspired plans to run a service for families with 0-11s in the OR gardens at 10.30AM (alongside the Contemporary service) starting next Sunday 9 May. At least one parent or guardian will need to stay with their children and take part in the fun.
SOUND & VISION. We still need more people on the tech and production team to ensure amazing (i.e. worship enhancing but unobtrusive) sound and vision in the churches as well as via YouTube. Good training will be provided and the skill is highly transferable! Watch the promo below, and contact Jacob if you would like to find out more.
BHC seeks an online digital producer and technician!
The advert for this 6 month part-time contract can be found on the job vacancies page. Please take and look and share with anyone who might be interested. Closing date 9 May 2021.
More Digi-disciples needed!
If you are wondering how we put out 3 online services each week, and who is behind the camera, here’s a great video to show what it’s like, and inspire you! Please contact Jacob if you’d like to be involved or find out more. e: jacob.taylor@bhcgodalming.org

Pcc approval for the café at Busbridge Church, and joining the parishes of busbridge and hambledon

The trustees (PCCs) of the churches met recently and we are delighted to share two bits of news with everyone. On Monday 26 April the PCC approved plans for the conversion of the Busbridge Church Centre into a café for parishioners and the local community. More
Hambledon PCC voted to seek diocesan approval for us to become one parish. Busbridge PCC had already voted for this. This does not change anything ‘on the ground’ but it does mean our governance, trusteeship and resources are held together better. We already meet in the same room as a joint PCC so not much would change there. There are no plans to change local ministry, local worship or local presence – particularly for Hambledon and we’re looking at ways to ensure that the commitment to long term clergy residence in the village is secured long, long into the future and as watertight as we can possibly make it.

NEXUS online Talk: Women in the Crimean War – 6 May
At the next meeting Margaret Jackson will give us some insights into the roles of women in the Crimean War, with tales from some who were there. Margaret has a keen interest in history and in portraying historical figures with experience working at Bletchley Park. It should be a fascinating presentation about a war which started in 1853 to uphold the rights of Christian minorities in the Holy Land. This will be a free Zoom meeting starting at 8.00pm, but you’re invited to join from 7.45pm so you’ll have a chance to chat with others. We look forward to seeing you!
Saturday Busbridge Prayer group and Prayerfest 0-30 in 60

Approval for a cafe at Busbridge Church
At a Special Meeting on Monday the PCC unanimously agreed to convert the Church Centre into a Café.
For the past two years the Centre Improvement Group has been working on the plans for the Centre to include a coffee area to create a welcoming environment, not just to the building but also to the church.
The Centre was built in 1975 and is now due for an upgrade to enable the church groups to carry out their evangelistic role fully.
It has been clarified that the church can run a café for parishioners and can widen this to the local community, this would be deemed ancillary use, which is a valid church activity.
The Team has done a vast amount of design, navigated some complex issues and carried out much research including visiting similar projects and the information is nearly complete.
The faculty permission was granted in January and the work has to be completed by 28th January 2022.
(See Appendix A for the Application and Faculty Documents)
Planning permission for the works has also been granted.
The Centre Improvement Group will continue to oversee the conversion of the building with the aim of an opening in the Autumn.
A new Sub Group of the PCC – The Café Management Team has been formed to look into the policies, procedures for the running of the café, advertising for Cafe Manager, Staff and Volunteers.
For more information please contact Michael Stubbs via the Church Office.
