  • Notices for Sunday 19 September

Busbridge Church have been given this beautiful fig tree by a couple who attended the last pre-marriage course in July. The next (one day) course is Saturday 13 November, and open to couples who are engaged or thinking about marriage. (You don’t necessarily need to be having a wedding at Busbridge&Hambledon.) Thanks to Tom and Debs and others for faithfully leading this course. See Pre-Marriage course.

    This Sunday

    POSSIBILITIES

    Readings: Mark 4: 1-20

There’s often a tension between problems and possibilities.
Some people are so focused on the dirt around them that they don’t see the Kingdom possibilities. In our teaching this Sunday we’ll be thinking about how to concentrate on the seeds, and their potential harvest, rather than the dirt they sit in.

Please continue to wear a face covering in church.

Leaders at the start of term Youth BBQ for Ichthus and Pathfinders last Sunday. Thank you!

Thank you to everyone who supported children and youth ministry last Sunday across the congregations and for our whole benefice on our first Sunday ‘back’. There were over 45 children at the contemporary service and a further 41 teenagers gathered in the evening from Witley, Wormly, Hambledon, Farncombe, Busbridge and places in between! If you helped in some way, thank you! If you would like to get involved, CYF needs you! Please contact Anto.

Would you like to give back to the community and support our church school and great head teacher? We have a vacancy for a church governor for our junior school (BJS). The governors meet a few times a year and there are two sub-groups which oversee resources and learning. If you would like to support our school in this way then please speak to Ron (chair of governors and usually at the classic at Busbridge) or Rev Simon T (vice chair of governors). All governors undertake safeguarding training and have a DBS check.

Have you invited anyone to come to the Archbishop of Canterbury’s Big Questions event at Priors Field on 26 September at 1.30pm? Watch the invitation from Justin Welby himself, and read on for booking details.

The September issue of the Bridge is out now and will be available for road stewards to collect from church this Sunday. Wait for it to drop on your doormat, or read the online version HERE. It would be much appreciated if road stewards could kindly collect and distribute their remaining Sept/Oct bundles of the Bridge from the back of church/church porch as soon as possible. (The church will be closed from lunchtime on Friday for a wedding).

Mens Matters The Men’s group resume their breakfasts on Saturday 4 September in the Old Rectory from 8.15am. Porridge, toast and coffee are followed by a discussion on one of the newsworthy topics of the day with those on the e mail list  getting more details nearer the time. Our discussion topic this month  will be about the future direction of the Church of England following a new publication  and a widely reported speech from the Archbishop of York. Our Rector Simon will be joining with us and after months on ZOOM it will be a thrill to regroup.  Please just turn up if you haven’t been before or contact Alan Betts (ajabetts@hotmail.co.uk) for more details.

NEXUS: To begin our Autumn term, on Thursday 9 September, we’re delighted that Charli Quay-Barnham, Head of Fundraising, will come and talk to us on ‘Phyllis Tuckell: Because Every Day is Precious’.  Phyllis Tuckwell is our chosen charity for 2021, so it would be good to have a ‘full house’ to hear about the vital work done by the team, both at the Hospice and in people’s homes; and how we might help. We’ll be meeting in the Old Rectory at 8pm!  It will be so good to see each other face to face again and catch up with friends over a glass of wine before Charli starts her presentation. All are welcome, including men if they’d like to join us!

Mentoring Surrey Care Trust has a one day training course at St Nicholas Church Cranleigh on 17 August from 10am-2.30pm. We have a local volunteer involved already and really enjoying it.  We have so many people in the church who would be fantastic at this.  Mentoring is for both adults and children/ young people, so not specifically youth. And free training is never to be sneezed at, and it is a skill which can be used her or anywhere. See the poster here.

Or call the Box Office on 07402 484484.

Over 40 volunteers are giving their time, expertise and talents to raise money for our charity, so it is really important that as a mission partner, BHC supports the initiative and church members buy and sell as many tickets as possible for what will be a thoroughly enjoyable few hours of entertainment. After all music and theatre is so good for the soul, whether watching, listening or performing, and there are some very talented folk who will be performing to raise everyone’s spirits.

Godalming Food Bank needs your help
The Food Bank at St Mark’s Church & Community Centre has been running since 2011, with the support of Godalming Churches Together and the Town Council.  The recent pandemic has led to an increased demand and, together with the Town Council, we are working to ensure we can continue and enhance our service. To help us maintain our friendly and efficient service we would like to increase our number of volunteers.

From September we need volunteers who can spare 3 hours a week either on Monday or Wednesday between 12:00and 3:00pm.  There will be an organised rota, so volunteering need not be every week unless you wish to help more regularly.

The role is varied and involves setting up and clearing away produce, meeting and greeting people and generally helping with their requirements, and taking donations and organising storage. If this is something you would like to be involved with please contact either Karen or Liz. Tele 01483 418741 emailstmarkscentre@gmail.com

The Cellar Camino café volunteer vacancies
For those interested in supporting the amazing work of the Cellar Cafe, opposite Waitrose, next to the Borough Hall, there are vacancies for a book keeper to keep track of café takings, and for volunteers to cover afternoon shifts (approx 2-4.30pm). One of the BHC Small Groups is already involved, so contact Mark Puddephatt, or Penny Harris via the church office if you’d like to find out what it’s like to volunteer. SURREY CHURCHES RIDE & STRIDE- 11th SEPTEMBER 2021

The Ride & Stride day is approaching. The Trust supports the repair and enhancement of churches in Surrey – and over the last 20 years we have raised about £500,000. Helping churches is only possible if you can help us to raise funds. The most popular way of doing this is the National Ride & Stride day when cyclists and walkers get sponsored to tour Surrey Churches. If anyone would like to take part as a sponsored cyclist or walker, or better still organise a group, please contact the Church Office.

Busbridge and Hambledon Churches are open daily for private prayer.

The Old Rectory is open Mon-Thurs mornings during August, and when not on leave, clergy and staff may be working from home. The answerphone is checked regularly, but the best way to reach people is by email.

Mens Matters The Men’s group plan to resume their breakfasts on Saturday 4 September in the Old Rectory from 8.15am.

Porridge, toast and coffee are followed by a discussion on one of the newsworthy topics of the day with those on the e mail list  getting more details nearer the time. Our Rector Simon will be joining with us and after months on ZOOM it will be a thrill to regroup.  Please just turn up if you haven’t been before or contact Alan Betts (ajabetts@hotmail.co.uk) for more details.

We’ll be meeting in the Old Rectory at 8pm!  It will be so good to see each other face to face again and catch up with friends over a glass of wine before Charli starts her presentation. These events are only for church members bringing guests, or guests booking places on their own. These events will be followed up with locally run Alpha courses. Busbridge&Hambledon Church is teaming up with Emmaus Road, Guildford and will be hosting the next Alpha in October 2021.

Details of all the events from 24-27 Sep, and how to get hold of tickets can be found here:

  • Time to set some goals!

    Time to set some goals!

It has been a summer of great sporting events: England getting to the final of the Euros and, of course, the Olympics.  I’ve been inspired by the story of Kimia Alizadeh who fled her home country of Iran, saying she felt she was just one of the “millions of oppressed women.” She went on to beat Britain’s two time Olympic Champion Jade Jones in Taekwondo. Kimia became the first athlete from the International Olympic Committee’s refugee team to win a medal.

She said “It was really hard, you change your country, you change your language. Everything changes, and it’s a lot of pressure on your mind. But I think taekwondo helped me in that hard year. When I am training I don’t think about anything.” Kimia’s achievement is all the more poignant given the extra struggles she has had face.

2000 years ago the apostle Paul liked to draw the analogy between how athletes underwent rigorous training to win the Olympics and how this might be an example for our own spiritual journey.

    >
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training.
    — 1 Corinthians 9:24 -Quote Source

Again he writes explaining how important it is to have a goal

    >
I press on towards the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenwards in Christ Jesus.
    — Philippians 3:12

In many ways we are encouraged to have goals. Those who’ve just received their exam results, GCSE’s, A levels, degrees, that new job or promotion, sales targets, fitness, lifestyle, diets and so on, know this well. Yet how often do we think of having goals for our spiritual journey? One pastor once said to me “if you aim at nothing you’ll hit nothing!” Should we not then also pay attention to the condition of the soul? What would it mean though to have goals in this sphere of life and how would we measure success?

The prize Paul refers to is nothing less than God himself. Paul is encouraging us to live in such a way as to be fully devoted, fully enjoying a relationship with God without barriers, shame or guilt. This assumes that we have already been made righteous because righteousness comes as gift of faith when we put our faith in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. This is good news because God does what we cannot do for ourselves but nevertheless, Paul stresses that our pursuit of God will still be an act of the will (to press on) even after we’ve received the free gift of salvation through Jesus. So what does “pressing on” look like in practice?

Just as an athlete will set smaller goals in order to achieve their ambition we too can set aside some simple practices: Being still, casting our worries on God (prayer), reading scripture, just a few moments a day can make all the difference. When we slow down just long enough we realise, God has been there all along.  Its striking to think that he seeks us and shows his delight in us as we create some space for him. Resting in his presence, his character begins to rub off on us: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self control – I know if I could simply grow in just one of these “fruits of the Spirit” something beautiful might be achieved. Time to set some goals!

  • Hello from Shelagh at Prime Time!

    Dear fellow Prime Time members,

    ‘I really ought to….’

I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling flat. And I don’t know why. I have so much to be thankful for: having received my second jab when millions in the world haven’t even had their first; things opening up exponentially here when lockdowns continue in other parts of the world; the Proms happening, and with an audience, something that couldn’t have been countenanced this time last year; and Team GB’s amazing success at the Olympics. The Olympics and the stories behind the competitors, have been a real lift in recent weeks. Take Beth Shriever, deprived of funding from UK Sport who said they could only fund male BMX riders, who was courageous enough to launch a crowdfunding campaign two years ago which got her to Tokyo and winning a gold medal. Or Simone Biles, whose mental health concerns forced her to quit most of her competitions; but who came back strongly in the beam event which won her a bronze. Not to mention the rowers who were narrowly pipped into fourth place. (After all, it isn’t winning that counts, it’s the taking part.) And there are countless others. And, if you are fortunate enough to have internet or a smart TV, all these events are still available to watch from your own living room.

So why do I feel flat? Perhaps it’s the weather, autumnal now for days and days. Perhaps we’ve forgotten about that heatwave back in July, or if we remember it at all it was because it was too hot to do anything. Perhaps it’s that nagging feeling, now that I have been double-jabbed, that I should be doing more. And if lockdown has taught me anything at all, it is that it is perfectly OK to stop, to rest, to reflect. There’s a wonderful poem somewhere which tells me just that:

What is this life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

No time to stand beneath the boughs

And stare as long as sheep or cows.

No time to see, when woods we pass,

Where squirrels hide their nuts in grass.

No time to see, in broad daylight,

Streams full of stars, like skies at night.

No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance.

No time to wait till her mouth can

Enrich that smile her eyes began.

A poor life this if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

W.H. Davies, who wrote this poem, had an unconventional life. He is said to have begged his way across America, having left his native Wales, and to have lost his leg while jumping from a train.

A wise old friend once told me that I was suffering from ‘hardening of the oughteries’. Yes, this nagging feeling again. I see requests for volunteers (and the Church is not exempt from this!) and feel I should step into every need that comes to my attention. But, as another wise old friend said to me: ‘The need does not constitute the call’. It’s OK to say ‘No’. It’s OK to tell myself that that is not my job, that other people are available to  do it. And it’s OK to accept that God loves me just as I am, without my having to earn His love by rushing around doing everything for other people.

In our generation, upbringing has a lot to do with it. If we didn’t live through the Second World War, we have parents, perhaps even grandparents, who did. They had to work hard simply to make ends meet. While we have been blessed with a National Health Service (even though we’ve had to wait to get things done), a state pension at least, and a free bus pass. And aren’t we grateful! When I was a little girl I was regularly sent ten bob (now 50p) at Christmas by a kind second cousin. One year the obligatory (in our family at least) thank-you letter didn’t get written because of a communication failure (yes, they happened even in those days before internet and mobile phones). For several years after that the cousin withheld her gift. Eventually all was forgiven, without any words being said, and the gift was restored.

In fact last week has seen many answers to prayer. Much to give thanks for! We had a lovely walk last week round Nymans Gardens, followed by lunch with people with whom we have linked up in friendship (through zoom) during lockdown. We visited a vineyard in East Sussex and learned how vines can thrive  now in this country, given some training and know-how. We had the privilege of entertaining a student from Iran and enjoying his company. I enjoyed a most entertaining walk round Guildford, learning about the significant literary figures who graced the town with their presence. And things are opening up in other ways: Jim has already taken part in concerts, services and recordings. And he does love his singing.  And prayers for a couple of friends have been answered in big measure.

I have been reading a most amazing book recently: it’s The Far Pavilions by M.M. Kaye. OK, it’s 900 pages long, but during lockdown I could cope with that, and it did take me some time to read. Why? Because it became so intense and exciting that I couldn’t read it at bedtime, for fear that thinking about it would keep me awake, and I do need my sleep! I do recommend it as a good read, but it does come with a health warning, which is that many of the more tragic episodes are based on fact: I know because I checked on the Internet afterwards. The book is also available as a TV series on one of those subscription channels that most of us cannot be bothered to get, cannot afford to get, or don’t know how to get. So there I leave it. Read the book.

You know what (as my grandchildren would say), I’m feeling less flat now. So perhaps a good time to leave it there with the words of the Psalmist: ‘Taste and see that the Lord is good, blessed is the man who takes refuge in Him’.

    Every blessing,

    Shelagh

    Church Family News

We are very sad to hear that Jacqueline Walker died in the RSCH early on Wednesday morning, 11 August.  She has been a member of Hambledon church for a number of years, with other connections which go back a long way.  We send our love to her children Jeremy, Jenny, Fenwick and Robin.  When we have news of a date for her funeral, we will let you know.  In the meantime, please hold them all in your prayers.

Accommodation needed for a church family, currently seeking jobs. 3 beds, 2 bath/shower, parking and garden. Near to £1000pm, somewhere in the GU7 code, so it’s not too far from schools, Rodborough and Busbridge. Please let Patrick Samuels know if you have any ideas.

This weekend – The Caroes are hosting a Shakespeare play in the famous garden of their family home Vann, Vann Lane, Godalming, over three days in August, 13-15, and are keen to spread the word among church members. The play has had very good reviews, and was chosen as a good family evening or afternoon.

Please do share with anyone that you think might be interested. Its a very very beautiful setting, and the Troubador Stageworks are well regarded.

The link has all the details for booking as well as reviews, but I paste a little in the message below for your interest

    Please support!
The Box Office is now open for you and your friends to buy tickets (£10) for the long awaited ‘Up Where We Belong Concert’ which Godalming Theatre Group are most generously staging with all proceeds going to The Cellar and Skillway. The link to the Box Office where you can buy tickets is:

    https://thelittleboxoffice.com/gtg

  • What would you do if you met your old self?

What would you do if you met your old self?

Have you ever looked into an utterly still, serene pond without a ripple on the surface? What struck you? I did this once when on a walking party up Cader Idris in Wales. What struck me was not my face but the immense expanse of the sky which filled the pond surface. And then some bright spark in the group threw a huge rock in the lake and the ripples roared into life and the moment of enormity was lost. The stillness was replaced by movement.

We’ve had a strangely still 18 months globally and locally. It has tested endurance to the limit. Now huge boulders of uncertain change are sweeping in and even as I write this in August I do not know if its message will be relevant or timely in September.

There are several stages to disaster response. Three of the more well known are rescue (immediate aftermath), recovery (the next couple of years) and then… it depends what happens next. In some situations there is a third stage. It can be reconstruction- back to the old ways – or a good and permanent change – restoration and renewal.

The problem with back to the old ways is that they don’t create resilience for the future. Recovery that leads to reconstruction what went before means losing the best of new relationships, closer community and changed pace of life. It loses the 18 months of stillness and reflection that has led many people to consider deep things. It is like the ripples have roared back into life and now we move on. We do need to have movement and alongside this it would also be great to keep the best of the deepest thing we’ve been considering in our souls. The choice is ours.

As a church and local community we have innovated and experimented. The rescue phase appears to be over. I hope and pray that we are less eager to leap into reconstruction of former things and instead to wade into renewal.

Renewal is a deeply spiritual word. A 19th Century preacher once said “If you are renewed… and were to meet your old self, I am sure you would be very anxious to get out of his [sic] company.” (Rev Charles Spurgeon).

As we look to the future my hope and prayer under God is that we’ll find that the good Lord has brought us to a softer, humbler, contrite and generous place. Throughout September we’re gathering as a church each Sunday to be a community that seeks renewal and to remember that while we seem to be recovering in the UK there are many elsewhere in the World who have yet to benefit as much as we have. You are welcome to join us in person or online. In the meantime, the beauty of water whether it is still, rippled or flowing, is that it represents good life and the Bible of course has these very famous lines in it about the stillness and beauty of water:

    >
The Lord is my shepherd, shall not want; he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.
    — Psalm 23
  • Hello from Di at Prime Time

    Dear Friends,

As Penny has told you she is having a well-earned break from sending you her weekly letter. We hope we can all live up to her high standards in the following weeks.

Like Penny I have been following a lot of the Olympics; I am full of admiration for the dedication the sportsmen and women put into the training for their sports. We sit in our comfy chairs cheering them on, hopefully to victory; do we think about the hard work going into achieving this ? Pushing themselves into going out on cold ,dark mornings day after day. A lot of them do this on top of holding down jobs to help finance their sport with no funding in place. How much sweeter are victories when you have gone through pain and hardships to attain them.

What I find amazing is the achievements of our sports people in our small island compared to the might and size of other countries. We are a very resilient nation as was proved during both World Wars. How much stronger are we when we have faith and God supporting us. I see a lot of the sports people kneeling to thank God after they have performed. Something else has happened recently in many sports and entertainments. A lot of youngsters have pulled out of competitions because of the mental pressures they are under. Whether it is due to media attention or abusive social communications, the strain of keeping up standards in their particular area of achievement has proved too much. Another pressure comes from the huge amounts of money that are paid to many of them. In our younger days when a lot of sports were played by amateurs, or for small financial rewards, it was for the fun of it. They didn’t all have agents pushing for more money, and stayed loyal to their clubs.

I remember my sporting days at an all-girls school and we were fortunate to have our own sports field, netball courts and nearby tennis courts. We played hockey and I was put in goal, despite being

short and skinny in those days. I took one look at the ball coming towards me and just leapt in the air. I much preferred playing netball and tennis, much less intimidating than hockey sticks flying past you. Now in later years I have played bowls and been fortunate enough to have won Club competitions and seen my name on the winners board in the Clubhouse. I was always happier when playing with others rather than by myself. In life I think most of us are happier when being with others rather than alone. Like our Prime Time group over time you feel a sense of family and support in good and bad times.

Now a majority of the population has been doubly jabbed and life is slowly resuming, perhaps not to how life was before the pandemic, we can look forward to meeting face to face again. I hope the Quizzes and chats we had during lockdown helped some of you feel less isolated and raised your moods with some laughs, and perhaps you learnt something new.

I hope you can all enjoy the rest of the summer and look forward to meeting again in small groups to start with. How time flies these days it will soon be autumn again. My daughter Amy will be 40 next week and that makes me feel older, where have the years gone?

Looking forward to seeing you all soon.

Love and virtual hugs to you all.
