11AM on Friday 24th Feb: National moment of silence to mark one year of Russian invasion of Ukraine. The bells at Busbridge and Hambledon Churches will be rung to mark the start and finish of the silence.

    Dear Friends,

It’s been a busy week! The Prime Time Shrove Tuesday event was a great success, with tea and pancakes enjoyed by 40 guests! Thank you to the (quite large) team of helpers who are committed to serving older people through Prime Time’s ministry. Worshippers from all BHC congregations and St Mark’s came together for the Ash Wednesday service at Busbridge. Our admin colleague, Sarah from Godalming Parish spent a day in the church office, and we look forward to her making herself at home in the Old Rectory on Wednesdays. (This should hugely help with understanding how each of the minster churches function behind the scenes as we start to merge.)

Last but not least, the Transformed Life Lent podcast for all 4 churches began on Wednesday, with a new episode becoming available every week day in Lent. Why listen? It uses the great devotionals by Dave Smith which run alongside the sermon series on Sundays, and the home group bible studies.

And speaking of home groups, thanks those who have signed up, and the groups who are coming on to the Small Group 6Ws Info Evening on Monday 27th Feb at 8PM (not 2.30pm as mentioned in the mid-week email). Richard Lloyd will lead the session. If you are not in a small group, it will give you a good reason to join or start one, and existing members will be inspired, enthused and encouraged to get even more from their group! Are you an online shopper? – The Busbridge Tech team needs you!
The Tech team has not quite recovered to full strength since the pandemic, and now has little resilience to cover holidays or illness – or even a five-week month.  The investment that the church has made in both the equipment and its installation has paid off and the system is now straightforward and reliable to use.  If you can do an online food shop and use email you are technical enough to be able to join the team (full training and support are provided).  We are looking for new people for the laptop, livestreaming and sound desk – which do you fancy?  Please contact Patrick Elshen or Vic Hicks if you’re interested in finding out more.

Hot Cross Bun hospitality team needed for the Good Friday Walk
This year the church family walk is from Hambledon Church to Busbridge Church where the multitude of thirsty hikers will arrive at the Old Rectory in need of tea and a hot cross bun. We need a team who are willing to forgo the walk, and organise and serve the refreshments in the Old Rectory. If you can, please let Vic know in the church office.

BHC Sermon Series for the season of Lent
BHC Sermon Series for the season of Lent

    Dear Friends,

Last week Muddy Church at Tuesley Minster Field reflected on the 1200 year history of Christian worship in the parishes of Busbridge, Hambledon and Godalming, before planting bulbs as a symbol of the revitalised Christian life we pray to be part of in the new Godalming Minster. The planting exercise was dubbed “Daffodil Discipleship”. They were actually Iris bulbs as it’s too late for daffs, but let not that get in the way of a catchy title for Muddy! Look out for either flower in the Busbridge woods this spring and summer and remember what they mean to us a disciples at this time in this place. Muddy next meets on Hambledon Village Cricket Green on 5 March.

This Sunday everyone is invited to the first session on Gifts of the Holy Spirit which will follow the 6PM service at Busbridge. John Valentine and Simon Taylor are leading the 6 40 minute sessions to equip everyone as disciples in and outside of the church. More details >>

The other important invitation is for Monday 27 Feb (7.30PM) when Richard Lloyd from Mission Enabler team @CofEGuildford will be joining us to explain the 6Ws for getting the best out of small groups. Richard is a great evangelist for small groups and how they can “unlock church” for everyone in its community. If you are not a small group member, it will give you a good reason to join or start one, and existing members will be inspired, enthused and encouraged to get even more from their group!

Everyone has a valued part to play in the life of the church, and we believe it’s key to feeling like you belong to the BHC family. If you are not already serving in one or more roles, please think about committing to something now. The commitment can be small. Most areas would welcome more volunteers, but support is urgently needed for the following:
Busbridge Electoral Role Officer – thanks to Maggie J for her years of service. Maggie’s successor will need to be available in advance of the APCMs in April/May each year, and a confident IT user (email and excel).
Busbridge AV Production Team – Laptop and or Livestream operators needed for 9.30am, 11.15am and 6pm (laptop only) – one Sunday a month. We’ve regrettably been unable to broadcast some services from Busbridge in recent weeks, and it’s missed. Training provided! See https://youtu.be/BDYQFjQx3-s and please contact Patrick Elshen to find out more.

  • Notices for Sunday 15 January 2023

    Dear Friends,

We are well into January, and already there have been a few great things going on this new year. The men’s group met for its inaugural breakfast of 2023 at Wetherspoons, Nexus have had their first meeting and our Ukrainian friends celebrated Christmas in Busbridge Church on Saturday 7 Jan (as they do in Ukraine). Thanks to Julie and Michael S and Lizzie B who hosted and made everyone feel so at home. It has been nice to see the church used as a hospitality and multi-way space so well in the Christmas season.

The new year’s highlight was the licensing of Rev Sheila Samuels as Associate Minister for Godalming Minister (when it forms) at St Mark’s Church and Community Centre which took place on 11 January. We share our love and congratulations with Sheila, and join Archdeacon Paul Davies in expressing our gratitude for her faithful service here already, and pray for her pioneering ministry going forward.

The Minster Steering group met last week to progress what it refers to as the “secular” (legal, financial, administrative matters) and “sacred” (mission and worship – what it’s all about!) activities that need to take place to bring Godalming Minster into being in 2023. Work with the diocese and the PCCs will carry on in the background for the time being.

For some of us there’s perhaps a feeling that things are back to full speed before we are ready. If the dull days and mud are dampening your “oomph”, and Spring seems a long way off, try church this Sunday to fan the joy of Christmas! Services, with children’s groups, are back to normal this Sunday.

The theme for 2023 is Living through Challenging Times, and along with the known and unknown international, national and personal challenges, 2023 will be a historic and exciting year for Busbridge and Hambledon Churches as they unite with Godalming Parish to become Godalming Minster. It will undoubtedly stretch many of us in faith, time and energy. In anticipation of some possible “straining at the oars” in any aspect of your life, the bible verse to take with us through 2023 is Mark 6: 50. Do not be afraid – Take Courage it is I. The theme will be introduced in sermons this Sunday.

  • The noise and quiet of Christmas

The noise and quiet of Christmas

The noise and quiet of Christmas

Are you ready for the noise of Christmas? The first proper Christmas in three years! Noisy and busy Christmas jumpers at the ready? The bustle is beginning. Last Sunday we were full at both Busbridge and Hambledon churches for the morning family carols. We’ve just hit the 300 mark for the second Christmas Eve candlelit family carols and the first service is already completely booked up –even with us taking the service on tour to the much bigger venue of StP&Ps in the town centre.

What noise does Christmas make for you? I’d like to invite you to a noise that ripples through time – it is the noise of Christmas quiet.

    ‘quiet hurtled

    through the store

    barging noise… away’

Some years ago I was in a shop when a mother had lost her child. It wasn’t the scream that stopped everyone. It was the deep hush – the quiet – that descended afterwards as everyone froze and looked around. The quiet hurtled through the store barging noise and activity away.

We’ve all lost something this year. How do we cope? We fill it with activity – with noise. Noise of football or rugby terraces, noise of anger or aggression, noise of more work, more work more work, noise of family, friends and feasting.

Noise is familiar and safe, but it drowns something that the courageous listen for. Noise drowns quiet out and, like in the supermarket, quiet stillness is alien to us and it discomforts us until we realise that the quiet is the best place to be.

    ‘Courageous people are willing

    to reach into Christmas

    beyond the noise and

look into the quiet of the soul’

Quiet is when we run out of noise. When I speak to people who have entered quiet, they find that quiet changes them. Why? It allows our souls to speak and for us to seek our souls. It is people of courage who are willing to remain in quiet rather than revert to the noise that is distracting. Courageous people are willing to reach into Christmas, beyond the noise, and look into the quiet of the soul. We fill our lives with noise to avoid the quiet in the soul because our souls are restless for the quiet of God’s peace.

After the earthquake came a fire, but the LORD was not in the fire.

And after the fire came a gentle whisper.

When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his face

and went out and stood at the mouth of the cave”.

    2 Kings 19

In recent weeks I’ve experienced two situations of the deepest quiet. It is as if time has stopped. In both situations, those I was with were courageous and allowed the quiet to dwell. They had both suffered incalculable loss, both had distance to contend with and both were entering a profoundly changing experience. Noise ceased. Quiet descended.

The sound of Christmas is to bring the quiet of peace to our souls. It is the quiet whisper of God that says into our lives “what are you doing?” because God has plans for who we are, what we are to do and how we are to be. People of quietened souls reconnected to God by Christ are people who do things differently. We are purveyors of quiet into noise and bringers of peace into aggression.

The quiet of Christmas is the cry of a new-born baby. Have you ever been in a situation where you have heard a new-born baby cry? Somehow, it evokes a response – an awareness. It silences our noise and we become acutely aware for a moment – we check for danger for the infant. This Christmas, Jesus cries out to us not as an infant but as the Mighty God everlasting, the author and perfector of the quiet peace of our souls and our souls quietly soar in response.

‘The quiet of Christmas is the cry of a new-born baby’

Isaiah 9: 5For every trampling boot of battle and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire. 6For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government will be upon His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Of the increase of His government and peace there will be no end.

Merry noisy and soul-quietened Christmas to you all. Here’s to 2023 as we courageously step out in quiet faith.
