When I was at primary school we had a glorious cookery lesson which has stayed with me ever since. We made bread. My memory is still full of the smell of the bread as it rose in the oven and our eager faces as we anticipated tasting it.
One of my friends camped out in front of his oven. He sat there for hours, peering through the glass because he was afraid that he’d miss out on the moment when the bread suddenly jumped into life and rose!
This is a great image of our celebration of recent Easter Day whether that was formally or within informal worship, with guitars or a robed choir. It is Resurrection Sunday. What a glorious day! It is our day of celebration when we gather as God’s people to glorify the Risen Saviour. We taste and see the fruits of the Holy Spirit as we gather in worship and thanksgiving – and this year, at Busbridge Church, we gave thanks for a particular couple who have lived the Christian life locally for many decades.
I read the other day that there are fewer Christians in the UK but there are more spiritually hungry people. What does a spiritually enquiring person find in Easter Sunday? That Christian faith is full of meaning, life, hope, purpose and the freedom from fear that is craved by all. Deep down, my experience of many people’s life stories is that they arrive at Christianity last on their spiritual quest because they haven’t realised that the deepest fears of life are met in Jesus Christ.
My school friend was like a reflection of much of life. He was afraid he’d miss out! So many people live in fear of not quite making the mark in their independence, autonomy, rights, experiences, relationships, or just missing out on stuff. The antidote to fear of missing out is one of our themes for the year from Mark 6:50. “Jesus immediately said to them ‘Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid”.
Fear is deeply rooted in what went wrong in the Garden of Eden (Gen 3:10). Jesus’ resurrection is the ultimate antidote to fear. The garden that represented death has become the garden of proof of life. It is no mistake that in the Garden Jesus’ first words after he’d risen were the ultimate corrective to Genesis 3:10. His words spoke freedom from fear. He said “why are you crying?” and the angels first response to the visitors to the tomb is “Don’t be alarmed”. Later Jesus speaks “Peace” to the disciples when he powerfully appeared within a locked room. I reckon they clung onto that word as they worked out what on earth was going on!
Easter Day is the high point of the Christian year and its smell and experience lingers with us as we head through 2023 as a Minster Church for all of Godalming and area. We gathered as the community of life to taste and see once again that there is only One Lord, One Faith, One Hope.
We no longer need to camp like my friend and his oven to watch and wait in case we miss out. We have arrived at the fullness of Life. Easter Day is Resurrection Sunday in the garden, but the story in the garden continues.
This Holy Week and Easter, we are using the theme of The Garden to reflect on what the Easter Story means in our lives today. Walk with us through the Garden this week:
Mon-WEDS: The path
The 8pm Holy Week Reflections at Busbridge Church have been using the audio clips by Paula Gooder. Join us for the last one tonight, or listen here on the Church of England web site.
MAUNDY THURSDAY: The vine
“I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer” (Luke 22.15)
WHEN & WHERE: 8PM at Hambledon Church
On this night we share communion remembering The Last Supper, and imagine Jesus relishing the opportunity to laugh, talk and celebrate with his friends.
He wants to empower them to keep strong, to keep the faith through what is to come. “I am the vine, you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15.5). When we celebrate communion we are not just remembering the sacrifice but also the companionship, friendship and love shared between Jesus and his disciples. We have a part in that too.
GOOD FRIDAY: THE TREE
There were lots of trees in the Garden of Eden, including the tree of life, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, as well as trees in which to hide. On Good Friday, the tree is something dead and wooden, as it holds the one who is the bringer of life. This is a very different kind of tree – a tree of pain, death and sacrifice. Today, we locate ourselves symbolically at the foot of this sad tree. Will you be there?

EASTER DAY: THE GARDENER

Simon and Catherine are grateful to the kind person or persons who through their Stewardship work are such a blessing to Simon and Catherine as Simon plans his sabbatical. We don’t know who you are, so this is our way to say a huge thank you to you.
Don’t forget about…
Simon’s sabbatical 11th April-15th July 2023 3rd time lucky! Simon Taylor will be taking a twice postponed sabbatical this year from Easter to July. (Stipendiary clergy are given a sabbatical every ten years, and Simon’s was postponed in 2020 due to Covid, then again in 2022 due to the Minster evaluation.) He leaves the leadership of the benefice in the capable hands of Simon Willetts, supported by Margot Spencer, the wardens, clergy and staff team. Minster plans will continue to develop.
While Simon is away, his plans involve some walking (The SW Coastal Path) and prayer, time with his leadership coach and spiritual director, reading, a visit to Simon’s spiritual retreat home (Storrington Priory, Chemin Neuf charismatic catholic Order) and some research on St Ignatius and the Jesuit Way of Life.
Please pray for Simon as he prepares for a restorative break from ministry, and for those he leaves in charge.

Last Sunday was a truly exciting Sunday of worship. Thank you to everyone who enabled the service at STPP to go ahead, including the Saturday set up team, children’s group leaders, musicians, tech, welcomers, and set down volunteers. It was a fantastic team effort and there were so many of us there (c160 adults and children combined). Then we had the well supported Classic which was beautifully led by Keith. Later 45 of us gathered at Hambledon Church for a time of deep lent through BCP Passiontide worship. A few people went to Haslemere Parish to represent us at the licensing of the new Area Dean. Many were at the 6pm service followed by the Holy Spirit ministry teaching at Busbridge Church. All in all, a great Sunday full of hope, worship and glory to God. So, from Simon T – thank you if you helped in some way or worshipped together somehow in our diverse offerings of praise.
BHC Clergy Team News: Small Groups, Music and Worship. We are delighted to announce that Rev Hilary Pettman has accepted the role of leading Small (House) Group ministry. Hilary has a passion and vision for Small Groups and will continue to lead the development of the 6Ws (just ask Hilary!). This enables Simon Willetts to respond to a calling into leading Music and Worship. Hilary and Simon believe this solution is of God, and it has met with resounding support and joy from your Small Group and Worship leaders alike! Simon takes on his new role along with the Rector’s responsibilities for the benefice while Simon Taylor is on sabbatical (11 April-15th July). For Simon T’s parting thoughts, see the latest Rector’s Reflection! Both Simon’s and Hilary request your prayers for the months ahead.
A prayer tree has appeared at the back of Busbridge Church. We created this for the recent Prime Time Tea & Talk event: God’s Trees as we thought it was an obvious link not to be missed. The Prime Timers were encouraged to write requests or topics for prayer on leaves which were then hung on the tree. Our Anna Chaplain Jane also took some leaves to the Hydon Hill service on Friday morning and a few of the residents and carers participated in the same activity and these leaves have been added to the Prime Time ones. The tree will be in the church for the Easter period for all visitors to make prayer requests in this way.

Paypal, Deloitte, Adobe, Brewdog, Buffer, Vistaprint, Church of England
All tech companies?
No. Brewdog is a brewery.
All created since 1845 (when Deloitte was founded)? No, the Church of England has been around for a very long time!
So what’s the connection?
Answer: They all invest in their people’s wellbeing through providing sabbaticals. The word sabbatical comes from the Latin for Sabbath – the Lord’s day of rest. So, a sabbatical is a faith-idea about rest and good patterns of living well. The first reference to the word sabbatical in the UK was in the 1590s!
There’s something special about the idea of a time of rest. We’ve lost that art and I don’t see that it is doing people much good. In many people’s eyes who I meet I don’t see rest, but exhaustion.
The Bible says that there should be a rest period every seventh day and every seventh year because this is God’s best pattern for us (Lev 25:1). If someone is in debt then they should be released from it on the seventh year so that it does not burden them too much (Deut 15:1).
A field should be left fallow to recover on the seventh year (Ex 23:10). If a time of rest is good enough for a field and God’s creation order, then it is a good model for us in our daily lives. That’s why churches have historically gathered people every seventh day. I have my old physics teacher in mind when I recall his words all those years ago when he taught us about the limits of stretching something “If you stretch an elastic band beyond its elasticity, it isn’t any good any longer.”
If you feel stretched, can I invite you to consider what your sabbath pattern could look like? Is Sunday just another day? If you’ve fallen out of the pattern of church on Sunday, please consider the benefits of what it releases in your spirit (Deut 15:1-2).
My sabbatical has come to me after being delayed due to covid lockdowns. It isn’t the seventh year but something approaching a quarter of a century! The question is, what does a vicar do on a three month sabbatical? Mine is a diverse undertaking.
I’m going to Barcelona to look at a cave where Ignatius of Loyola pondered the meaning of life. He formed a Rule of Life shaped on Christian faith which might stand many of us in good stead in the midst of an increasing fractured and World and communities:
· More – seek to do things well
· With – to be alongside others
· Cura Personalis – respect for all, even in disagreement
· Heartbeat –of heart, mind and soul together
· Ad Majorem Dei Gloria – God matters
· Ethic – living well
I think these are universal desires for good patterns of living. I’ll be returning with some thoughts on what this might look like to benefit many of us in a busy Surrey community and local church.
Of course, Barcelona also has Camp Nou (aka Spotify stadium) so that will be a different bit of experience for the heart!
I’ll be taking some time to walk part of the South West Coastal Path to follow in the footsteps of Raynor Winn’s book ‘Salt Path’. I’ll be visiting my favourite retreat centre, the Roman Catholic community of Chemin Neuf in Storrington, West Sussex, which I tend to visit twice a year. Between these times there’ll be space for a few past times that have slipped over the past quarter of a century of serving the church and the local community as your vicar.
The church is in great hands with many fabulous volunteers and a brilliant staff team who serve everyone locally with such love and devotion. We’ve got a very able team of vicars here so all the usual vicar things of both joy and sorrow will continue uninterrupted.
We have some special things on at church this Sunday, so please read carefully.

The Godalming Parish PCC and Busbridge and Hambledon PCCs met on 13 March 2023 and approved the following proposals:
The service pattern for the 4 churches in the Godalming Minster. A final schedule of Minster wide services has been developed and is now agreed by all three PCCs. The schedule accommodates the needs of most congregations and provides for stability and growth. Inevitably compromise is required by the Sunday morning Choral and Contemporary congregations and this is genuinely appreciated. The pattern of services is as shown below. The focus so far has been on establishing the timing of specific services. Holy Communion services for the Contemporary service at 10.30am will be added shortly. The service pattern will begin in January 2024 for a trial period of 12 months, dependant on completion of the SPSP church re-ordering. It is anticipated there will be one off contemporary services held in SPSP during the 4Q 2023.
The 2023 Minster Budget for communications and media, and new Contemporary music equipment at SPSP.
The Parish Scheme to legally consolidate the parishes and charities, which will now go to Bishop Andrew for approval.
Godalming Parish PCC also approved the proposal and budget for the temporary re-ordering of St Peter and St Paul’s.
For fuller details about the points above, and news from the Minster Leadership Team, please read the full update. For the background and more details about the transition process, see Godalming Minster
The daffodils are up and we are looking forward to Mothering Sunday. This is a good time to show our love and appreciation for the mother figures in our lives and this Sunday we will have a small gift for all the ladies in our Church for the children to give out. Simon Taylor is leading services at Busbridge and has asked that you come prepared with the name of an important female in your life. Hambledon will be honouring mothers at 10am, and the Messy Team will be providing organised chaos at the Village Hall at 4pm which will be just the ticket for Mums who have been spoilt will flowers, lunch and good behaviour all day (we live in hope…). Easter approaches too, and there’s a few events to note, sign up for and offer to help at. Please read on!

Thanks to EVERYONE for their support, grace and patience as we try out the new venues. The Contemporary service will be followed by the Choral Eucharist, starting at the later time of 11.15AM than its usual 10am. Thanks to those who worship at St Peter and St Paul’s for their flexibility.

*Thanks to everyone attending the Holy Spirit ministry training evenings and to John Valentine for his excellent input. Come along to the next session for the work of the spirit in the gift of tongues.

Book donations for St Mark’s Church: St Mark’s would like to start a library and is looking for donations of good Christian books. So many different groups use the hall, so any books about Christian faith for seekers, books about suffering and the problem of pain, autobiographies of Christians would be much appreciated. Perhaps Christian children’s books? We want it to be modern readable material which will be accessible for those who want to find out more about christianity or to deepen what faith they have. There will be a box at the back of Busbridge church labelled “Books for St Marks” for the next few weeks. Any questions please feel free to contact me on eashingstubbs@aol.com.
Church newsletter delivery St Mark’s mission is to reach out to the local community to raise awareness of the Church and all it offers. St Marks Church is issuing a Spring Newsletter to the area around the church in March and if anyone could help deliver, that would be good. There will be teams going out if you want to go in pairs. To sign up or to know more information please contact Sheila on sheila.samuels@bhcgodalming.org.
Nominations are invited for representatives to Godalming Deanery Synod, for the next three year term which runs from 1st July 2023. We are allowed four representatives from Busbridge and three from Hambledon. Elections will take place at the APCMs on Sunday, 21st May. You need to be over 16 and on the electoral roll to stand but do not have to be a current PCC member (you would automatically become a member of PCC if elected to Deanery Synod). The Godalming Deanery is made up of fifteen parishes from the local area and provides an opportunity for lay and clergy representatives to discuss issues which are common to the local churches. The nomination form can be found here: https://www.parishresources.org.uk/wp-content/uploads/DS-Nom-2020.pdf and should be returned to the Church Office.

Are you an online shopper? – The Busbridge Tech team needs you! The Tech team has not quite recovered to full strength since the pandemic, and now has little resilience to cover holidays or illness – or even a five-week month. The investment that the church has made in both the equipment and its installation has paid off and the system is now straightforward and reliable to use. If you can do an online food shop and use email you are technical enough to be able to join the team (full training and support are provided). We are looking for new people for the laptop, livestreaming and sound desk – which do you fancy? Please contact Patrick Elshen or Vic Hicks if you’re interested in finding out more.

Answer: The 6Ws of Small Groups
Well done for getting this far! On Monday Richard Lloyd suggested the following elements form the basis for a super small group session, and can be included to a greater (20 min) or lesser (5 min) degree on a weekly or, perhaps, rotation basis:
Try and include all these bits in a 2 hour session:
WELCOME – Getting to know each other time for a chat and catch up. Offer refreshments, perhaps even a bring and share meal.
WORSHIP – watch and sing with a worship song or set on YouTube. If someone in your group plays the guitar or piano – brilliant! If this sounds too daunting, start by simply listening.
WORD – bible study using the Swedish method – easy to lead and participate and encourages all members can have a go.
WAIT – Space to reflect and listen to God. Pray, but with a focus on growing closer to Jesus and personal discipleship.
WEIGHT – quick feedback on the session. Was it helpful? Did it support growth in discipleship?
Busbridge and Hambledon Churches are open daily for private prayer.
The Yew Tree Café at Busbridge Church is open 8.30am-4pm weekdays in term time, and 10am-2pm on Saturdays, and 10am-4pm during school holidays.
If you, or someone you know at church, are in need of support and care, please contact Sandra Wilkin via the church office, or e: pastoral@bhcgodalming.org.
It hardly seems possible, but our monthly Men’s breakfasts started 20 years ago, in March 2003. In the early days we often followed courses or had presentations from internal or external speakers, but in February 2009 we moved to the format we now have of breakfast followed by a discussion of a topic of (usually current) interest. The list of topics we have covered makes fascinating reading, and you might want to skim through it (but please have pity on the planet’s resources and don’t print it out!).
In celebration of this milestone, this coming Saturday, 4th March your tag team of Alan and Dudley will be serving up a 20th Anniversary Fry-Up. Instead of our usual porridge and toast, join us at 8.15am for an Old Rectory All Day Breakfast (so named because you won’t feel like eating anything else for the rest of the day…!).
Afterwards, we thought that we would reflect on some of the topics and discussions we have had over the years (so if you are coming, do take a few minutes to refresh your memories from the attached Topics list).
It would be lovely to see as many fellow travellers as possible, so do come along at 8.15 on Saturday. It would be helpful to the caterers to have an indication of numbers, so if you know you’re coming do ping us a quick response (but that’s not essential, do come anyway – we’ll have enough grub to cater for all who turn up!).
There’s no charge but any contributions on the day will be very welcome (unfortunately we are still old school and don’t have a facility to accept plastic – other than £50 notes, that is!).
