    • Introducing…Older People’s Ministry
With so much going on around Godalming Minster, this is a regular item which will remind people about particular areas of mission and ministry. This week, following the 10th anniversary of the Busbridge Hearing Aid Clinic, we are focusing on activities led by Penny Naylor which provide support and friendship for Older People.

    • What’s New? Mental Wellbeing Group (Kintsugi Hope) starting 21 Feb.

    Dear Friends

Godalming Minster made the Diocese news this week, following the wonderful launch service last Sunday. You can see the full story, and some great pictures here.

So many were involved in making it the memorable occasion it was, so huge thanks to all those who welcomed people, sang in the choir, played in the band, served coffee and prosecco, operated the AV, ran the children’s activities, or helped clear up! The new audio visual system was thoroughly put through its paces, though we apologise that the live stream was not available as hoped. This will be tested for future events. The brass engraved plaque which was presented to Mayor of Godalming, Adam Duce for public display by Godalming Town Council reads:

At this historic time for the community, we commit to working together for the good and benefit of the town and its residents.

Presented to Councillor Adam Duce, the Town Mayor of Godalming,
by The Reverend Simon Taylor, Rector of Godalming Minster, and
Churchwardens David Wilkin and William Bryans
     to commemorate the inauguration of
Godalming Minster on 14th January 2024

The bible verse at the bottom of the plaque, and on the celebratory cake is:
“And in this place I will grant peace” declares the Lord Almighty”.

    Haggai 2:9

(A replica will be on display in the Busbridge Old Rectory in due course.)

    This Sunday

    10.30am Churches Together United Service
    at Godalming Minster Church Street
All congregations are encouraged to join Godalming and District Churches Together for a service to mark the 2024 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity. There are no other morning services in Godalming Minster.

    4pm Messy Church
    at Hambledon Village Hall
For those with (roughly) primary school age children, Messy is a fun session of craft, games and music based on a bible story, with a sandwich tea to finish. All welcome, no need to sign up. It’s free!

    Sunday 28 January

    Introducing…Older People’s Ministry

The cake says it all! Tea, cake and the Jack Russell are as much a feature of the Godalming Minster Hearing Aid Clinics as the batteries and maintenance.
The cake says it all! Tea, cake and the Jack Russell are as much a feature of the Godalming Minster Hearing Aid Clinics as the batteries and maintenance.

Last Friday the Busbridge Hearing Aid Clinic celebrated its 10th anniversary with a special party like clinic for visitors in the Old Rectory. BHC was an early pioneer of the Diocese Hear Here project at Busbridge Church, and Penny and the Hearing Aid Champions have since started monthly clinics at Hambledon (10.30-11.30 on 3rd Wednesdays of the month), and most recently, a very busy clinic at Godalming Library (10.30-12.30 on 3rd Mondays of the month). 9 visitors attended the first clinic in 2014. Average monthly numbers are now more than five times higher. That’s a lot of people who have avoided longer journeys, costly parking and lengthy queues at NHS hospitals and clinics. And there’s time for a chat too! You can also pick up Hearing Aid batteries from the Yew Tree Café anytime. See Hearing Aid Clinics.

Many other things make up Older People’s ministry, one of the main ones being Prime Time. Prime Time hosts a range of informative and social events designed to enrich and appeal to the more mature (there’s no age limit). Events are free, and transport can be provided. From Movie Matinees held monthly in Godalming Minster Brighton Road from Oct-March, to special and seasonal events. The event next week promises to be a real treat, and all are welcome:

Prime Time Harp Recital by Margaret Watson – 2.30pm on 26 Jan. See flyer. Margaret Watson is one of the busiest professional harpists in South East England and she is renowned for her versatility as a harpist in the range of music she performs. Margaret has performed for Royalty at the London’s Guildhall, The Savoy and The Ritz, but for one afternoon only she will perform for Prime Time at Godalming Minster Brighton Road.

    • About Godalming Minster weekly notices

    • Godalming Minster email, socials and other online accounts

    • Your new PCC

    • The Alpha Course – for you or a friend

    • Saturday Prayer Gathering

    • Mental Wellbeing group starting in Feb

    Dear Friends,

Here we are, almost a fortnight into life in Godalming Minster. This Sunday is a special one as we all come together for the official launch of Godalming Minster, 10.30am at Godalming Minster St Peter & St Paul’s Church Street. There you will be joined by bishops, MPs, mayors, councillors, representatives from local schools and town services, all taking part in a very historic event for the Godalming area. The service will feature elements representing all corners of the Minster, and finish with a celebration at the end.

Please arrive in plenty of time. If you are arriving by car, we suggest parking in the Crown Court car park (free on Sundays), exit river side and then look out for a Welcomer in a high-viz jacket to direct you. Tea, coffee and squash will be available from 9.50-10.20am in the Lady Chapel area, to the far right of the main door. Choral and contemporary music will be sung and played by the choir and band from approx 9.50am.

The Clergy team and community leaders will be making an informal procession from the Pepperpot to Godalming Minster Church Street just after 10am.

During the service, children of any age will be invited to nip out for a while to take part in fun activities in the Octagon. If that’s not enough, there will be limited edition Godalming Minster cookies to go with the prosecco (or non-alcoholic alternative) after the service!

This will be the only service taking place in Godalming Minster this Sunday. Everyone has a part to play, and we give thanks for everyone involved in the planning of this Sunday.

    More notices for January 2024

This is the first issue of the weekly notices for Godalming Minster, sent to subscribers from all Godalming Minster congregations. Please send submissions to vic.hicks@godalmingminster.org by 9am Wednesday for inclusion. We have united 4 busy churches and will aim to balance minster-wide items with the news and events from all congregations and activities, while trying to avoid an overwhelming amount of content. The plan is also to publish a monthly printed news sheet for different locations, which will include more local items and events calendars.

You may have noticed that Clergy and staff emails have now been changed to firstname.lastname@godalmingminster.org. This includes email addresses for John Harkin, Sarah Bryans, Karen Milton and Sheila Samuels. Please update your email address books! Messages sent to the old bhcgodalming.org addresses will be forwarded for the time being.

Social Media – On Instagram, the BHCGodalming acount has changed to @godalmingminster, and the existing followers have been transferred with it. The name change has been requested on Facebook, so that could happen anytime too.

The URL (domain name) for ChurchSuite and YouTube will be updated to Godalming Minster next week. The fully united web site will take a bit longer, but the bhcgodalming.org site will be incorporating content from Godalming Parish in the meantime.

    Stay Curious Try Alpha

The aim of this group is to provide a safe and supportive environment where participants can explore topics related to mental health and wellbeing in a facilitated peer mentoring type setting. The content is designed to help people know ‘it’s OK not to be OK all the time’, more deeply understand the reality of God’s love for them, experience an increase in self-worth, confidence, and wellbeing and grow towards a more resilient and hopeful future. Numbers will be limited. If this is a group which you may be interested in, please sign up here, or contact Sandra Wilkin at pastoral@godalmingminster.org

The Hub at St Mark’s Franklyn Road welcomes guests on Tuesdays from 12.30-2.30pm, and serves a free lunch in a warm and friendly atmosphere, followed by time to socialise. All welcome, including those who would like to help cook or provide a cake. Contact sheila.samuels@godalmingminster.org.

Next Saturday – Movie Matinee, 2.30pm at Godalming Minster Busbridge Church Brighton Road. Come along and enjoy a free cinema experience, complete with popcorn and refreshments. In this month’s film released in 1995, cartographers Reginald (Hugh Grant) and George (Ian McNeice) visit a Welsh village in order to measure the height of a local peak. But when the villagers discover their prized mountain could be categorized as a hill if it doesn’t reach 1,000 feet; the offended community come together to protect the source of their local pride. Movie Matinee’s are hosted by Prime Time.

Churches Together Christmas Day Lunch – Helpers needed
Churches Together in Godalming and District for many years has organised a Christmas Day Lunch for people who would otherwise spend the day on their own. Invitations to attend are distributed through the Godalming churches, doctors’ surgeries and community centres.

Guests arrive at Godalming Baptist Church in Queen Street for a soft drink followed by a full Christmas lunch.  After lunch there is entertainment and everyone is given a small gift. The day is very good fun and a lovely way to spend Christmas!

Volunteers are needed for a variety of roles:  preparing food and setting tables on 24 December; providing transport on Christmas Day, helping in the kitchen with serving and washing up, hosting the day; providing entertainment and a team to help clear away.  If you can help, or would like to be a guest, please complete and return the forms below.

  • Notices for Mission Sunday 10 December

    Dear Friends

What a great start to Advent! An enjoyable quiz, Advent Carols in all their forms (traditional to acoustic contemporary around the campfire) took place last weekend, and this week the Christmas hampers have been prepared and packed. Sherry with the Vicars was a lovely event, bringing Prime Time together with people from across the Minster churches. After completing the Christingle kits for this Sunday, guests set about covering hamper boxes. There’s no sherry in the pics below, but we are reliably informed that it wasn’t all hard work!

You may have seen the promotion for The First Nowell video on Instagram and Facebook already, but we’ll be seeing it again on Sunday, and the full version of the video will be premiered at the 4pm Christingle, and at the Carol services on 17 December. It’s a wonderful effort from so many, but special thanks to our multi-talented associate vicar/ worship pastor/music producer Rev Simon Willetts, and to Ben Barnes and Jacob Taylor for making it all happen.

This year’s Christmas Appeal is in aid of Elam Ministries (see https://www.elam.com) and read the update below. You can donate in advance of Sunday, when you come to church, or next week.

    Advent & Christmas

There is now a very simple holding page for www.godalmingminster.org to direct everyone to Christmas events and services, and the existing church web sites. (Development of an exciting new web site is getting underway.) Pick up a Christmas programme at church this Sunday, or download the pdf below:

    Christmas Hampers
The first batch of hampers was packed on Thursday evening at the Packing Party at St Mark’s. Thanks to Karen Milton for organising everything, and to all those who came to help, our youth group and a group from Priors Field School.

There are more households on the list, so it’s not too late to donate items to help local families, some of whom are supported by the Foodbank at St Mark’s year round, and some who appreciate a little help at this time of year. We like to make the hampers a real treat and show of love and generosity to those who might not be able to enjoy the nicer things at Christmas. It is especially appreciated if the items are from the luxury range rather than value range. See the shopping lists and select 3 or 4 items to buy. No gifts will be wasted! You can drop hamper items off at the Yew Tree Café ASAP.

    Help make it all happen
It be great to spread the load this Christmas and support our service and worship leaders in making every service and event a success. Please look at the programme and let the Church office know when you are available, or better still use the nifty form below!

Stay Curious Try Alpha – course starting 11 Jan 2024
Godalming Minster’s first Alpha course is starting on 11 January 2024 at Godalming Minster St Mark’s Franklyn Road. Keith Harper will be delighted to hear from you whichever option you choose!

    Dear Friends,

149 people were remembered at the Memorial Service last Saturday. As always, the home baking and cheerful service was magnificent and really appreciated by those who attended in person. For those who couldn’t attend, it was obviously still important. As an online attendee wrote:

“I was very pleased and moved to hear all of my family remembered by name – it is comforting to know that their memory lives on in our old parish church, as well as in me, here in New Zealand.”

Thanks to absolutely everyone involved, and to Margot who led the service and all it’s arrangements.

The Bereavement café is running twice more this year, as usual next Tuesday 28 Nov 2.30-4pm, and in the evening from 7-8.30pm on Tuesday 12 Dec for mulled wine and mince pies. The Bereavement Café will be in Old Rectory on both occasions.

The notices this week are largely concerned with Advent and Christmas, and the countdown to Godalming Minster. However, please also spend a few moments to consider the Alpha course information in preparation for the course starting on 11 January – and what it might mean for you.

The sermon series for Advent begins this Sunday, with the teaser “Are we ready for what’s coming?” Ha ha! All sorts of answers might come to mind… Thankfully it’s not referring to your Sainsbury’s Christmas slot or shopping achievements on so called “Black” Friday. Not even to the preparations for starting a Minster. But is should make us sit up and draw us closer to God as we follow the most loved Christmas story through Advent.

    Dear Friends,

This Sunday is national church Safeguarding Sunday, and we will be marking it in services with a special prayer or song, suitable for the congregation. Jenny Lansdowne is the Safeguarding Officer for BHC, and will continue this role for Godalming Minster, alongside Sarah Higgins who is the safeguarding officer for St Peter and St Paul’s. Everything we do as a church and Minster is underpinned by our Safeguarding policy. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, but we are hugely grateful to Jenny and Sarah for leading us in this undertaking.

Today is Godalming’s Day of Peace, and there’s an exhibition running in Godalming Museum, a poetry reading at 6pm, and one of our church members, Dawn O’Toole, is leading a peace craft workshop in the Pepperpot this afternoon. This is an important sign for our town, particularly as we look ahead to tomorrow and Sunday when Remembrance services will be taking place, and we continue to pray as ever more alarming world events unfold. Praise for the Light Party!

    Dear Friends,

We had a full house/church/Old Rectory on Tuesday evening for the first Godalming Minster Light Party! More than 100 little superheroes turned up in force to bounce in church, sumo wrestle in the chancel, make a crafty shield or search light, and hunt for stars to exchange for treats in the OR garden. Batman and Robin led a superhero workout, and there was a brilliant team of volunteers to face paint, help with craft and serve hot dogs. We should probably do it again next year!

“What an incredible evening, thank you so much. Jacob loved every minute, it was fantastic. You are superheroes too! Hope the clearing up wasn’t too horrendous!”

“It was a wonderful evening and Isabelle had the best time too!
Thank you very much for organising!!”

“Thanks to all concerned in arranging the Light Party this evening. It was a wonderful event. My two children enjoyed it; Ricky the games, Becky the craft activities in particular.”

“I just wanted to say a huge thank you to you, Ben and Marcus for the Light Party.
The boys loved it and I was blown away by the amount on offer for the children to do and the levels of organisation. It was amazing! Thank you and please pass on our thanks to everyone involved.”

Gents – there’s breakfast tomorrow at 8.15am in the Old Rectory where the national and global events of the last month will be discussed over coffee and porridge. All are very welcome.

Thanks to all those who attended the Godalming Minster prayer gathering on Monday. Chairs in different arrangements around Busbridge Church were used to guide prayers for Godalming Minster to draw in those who have left and those who are not yet part of Godalming Minster (2 empty chairs), for those in the Minster family and our community who are grieving or lonely (a single chair), and for the clergy and those in leadership (a stack of chairs). Please join us for the next prayer gathering which will be at St Peter and St Paul’s 7.30pm-8pm – date tbc, and please continue to pray for God’s blessing and guidance as we countdown to the launch of Godalming Minster on 1st January 2024.

There is now a very simple holding page for www.godalmingminster.org to direct everyone to Christmas events and services, and the existing church web sites. (Development of an exciting new web site for January is getting underway.) If you missed the short presentation at church last Sunday, you can find it HERE.

Busbridge is blessed to have a great team of Road Stewards who deliver The Bridge magazine six times per year.  We are currently looking for a volunteer to deliver in the Monteagle, Westdene and Birchanger area near Summerhouse Road.  This will take less than 30 minutes, so it is a commitment of less than 3 hours per year!  We would also like a Road Steward who could cover for other Road Stewards who are on holiday as required.  Please email David Brockman if you think you can help or want more information at editor.atthebridge@gmail.com.

NEW Hymns we Love – Fridays, 2.30pm, for 5 weeks
With the help of our Anna Chaplain and Prime Time Team member Jane Tomes, Prime Time is starting Hymns We Love – a 5 week series of sessions which uses well-loved hymns to explore the Christian faith.  Each session features a beautifully shot video set in a historic English church, and tells the story of the hymn and the gospel message behind it.  It is a series that has been developed specifically for use in groups of older adults and so is perfect for Prime Time, but may have wider appeal too. All are welcome.

    Annual Memorial Service
Each year we hold a Memorial Service to remember friends and family members who have died, either recently or at any time, however long ago.  This year’s service is on Saturday 18 November at 3.00 p.m.  Invitations will be going out within the next few weeks, and there will be spare invitation letters at the back of all our churches.  During the service we read out the names of those we remember and light candles in their memory.  Refreshments are served afterwards and all are welcome to stay.  The service is open to everyone, so please put the date in your diary. It’s not too late to join the Bereavement Journey course, continuing Wednesday 1 November. Please use the link below for details, and share with anyone you know who might benefit.

For those looking ahead further, the dates for Christmas services and events are now available on the calendar, and on A church near you. Some details might get a tweak, but you can at least save the dates. You will be able to pick up a programme in church after half term. Before that there is plenty in the following notices which we kindly ask for your attention!

    church family news

We send our love to Sally Morgan, whose brother Michael died in October, and whose funeral took place this week.  Please hold Sally, Owen – who has lost a dear uncle and godfather, and the whole family in your prayers. Please ask for God’s comfort and presence to be with them all.

Many will know by now that Richard Postill, son of John and Jeannie, died in hospital in Brussels on Saturday 21 October.  We send our love to Jeannie on this double bereavement.  Please pray for her, for Richard’s wife Marielle, and for Liz and the wider family, as they mourn the loss of both John and Richard – for God’s comfort and grace to enfold them all.

Liz Gorst’s father Brian died suddenly on 21st October.  Please hold Liz, Steve and James in your prayers, together with Brian’s wider family – pray for God’s peace and comfort to surround them all.

    get involved / serving

We’re passionate about people feeling like they’re a part of our church family and one of the best places to do that is as part of a team.

No matter your age or experience, there’s a team that you can join, serving alongside others and getting to know people better in the church. You can find out about all our opportunities to serve and offer your time and talents on the Join a Team page.
