    Dear Friends

It’s Father’s Day this Sunday, and though it’s not a biblical – or Anglican – celebration, we will be showing our appreciation of all Dads and father figures with a little gesture in our services this Sunday!

Last Sunday we launched an appeal to help with the repairs to the Busbridge Church Tower at Godalming Minster Brighton Road. Thanks to everyone who has collected an delivered the Busbridge Tower handouts around Busbridge. We are now out of copies, so if you have any leftovers, or need more please email vic.hicks@godalmingminster.org.

Thanks too to all those who joined the Day of Prayer on Monday 10th June. We asked everyone to pray throughout the day for the tower, the Peace Bell it houses, and what it represents as a symbol in the community. You can still use the prayer programme while the repairs continue.

Sponsor Ben’s Walk! To help with the fundraising Ben Rogers is planning to walk a heroic 37 miles, barefoot, from Brighton back to Busbridge along the Downs Link next week on 19-20 June. We’ll be tracking Ben, and sending support along the way, so please follow godalmingminster on Instagram and Facebook for updates.

    Clergy news
Many people have been asking about the plans for John Harkin’s retirement on June 30th 2024.  This week the PCC unanimously agreed to ask the Bishop to extend John’s existing contract (3 days per week) for up to one more year, whilst John and Sue continue to work with the Church of England to find a suitable retirement property. The extension of John’s licence and living is supported by the Archdeacon and the Bishop of Guildford so John will be licensed before the end of June to enable him to continue to serve across the Minster.

Following the successful funding appeal in Hambledon, Godalming Minster is now in a position to advertise for a new Associate Minister to live in Hambledon. Whilst we advertise for this post, John will continue ministry to the Church Street congregations in addition to supporting ministry in Hambledon.  This way, we gain an immediate increase in clergy involvement for Hambledon.

The Hambledon post will be advertised shortly once the Archdeacon has signed off the role specification and related documentation.  The advert will invite ‘expressions of interest’, rather than have a definite interview date, to give us flexibility in how we proceed and will enable us to have conversations with prospective clergy candidates. There will be further announcements on Sunday which support having John with us for a while longer.

Congratulations to David Brockman for being accepted by the Diocese to become a Locally Licensed Minster (LLM). David has been working with Andy Spencer, Simon Taylor and others on hearing a call to develop his God given gifts in preaching and services, discipleship support and small groups. Thanks to Andy Spencer for Andy’s work on discernment with David and several others in the Minster congregations.

    Things to celebrate
The tower prayer day was well received by many people, and it seems like hundreds of Minster worshippers were praying throughout last Monday. Ben Rogers has already raised £1,600 for his barefoot tower-walk. Do sponsor him! Several donations have already been given for the tower repairs and the tower leaflet has been well received in the community.

Last Sunday, the monthly 8am BCP 1662 service at Church Street had a record 27 worshippers, followed by an excellent croissant breakfast. On Tuesday evening Ben Barnes hosted a thank you party for more than 30 people who serve in our children’s ministry.

The current Bereavement Journey course is now well underway, with more participants than planned. Please pray for the participants and the pastoral assistants who are leading the course. If you would like to find out about future courses, please register your interest, or consider trying the Bereavement Café which next meets on Tuesday 25th June in the Busbridge Old Rectory from 2.30pm-4pm. Information about Bereavement Support can be found under What’s on.

  • Notices for DDay80 and 9 June 2024

    Dear Friends

At 11am today, there was an important act of remembrance and service at the Godalming Town War Memorial besides Godalming Minster Church Street. The public gathered alongside representatives of the military, emergency services, those in civic and council service, town representatives and the British Legion gathered to commemorate the terrible sacrifices on D-Day, 6th June 1944. Simon Taylor led the service and shares his thoughts on DDay80 in the latest Rector’s Reflection.

This Sunday we are launching an appeal to help with the repairs to the Busbridge Church Tower at Godalming Minster Brighton Road. You may have seen the scaffolding! Information about the project can be found in the handout which the Classic and 6pm congregations have been asked to deliver to their Busbridge neighbours. Copies will be available at Brighton Road from next week, and it would be great if those from other congregations who live in Busbridge could help with these deliveries.

Most important for everyone is the Day of Prayer on Monday 10th June. We are asking everyone to pray throughout the day for the tower, the Peace Bell it houses, and what it represents as a symbol in the community. Please follow the prayer programme throughout the day, and join us for the prayer gathering in the church at 12 noon.

To help with the fundraising Ben Rogers is planning to walk a heroic 37 miles, barefoot, from Busbridge to Brighton along the Down’s Link on 19-20 June. Surely that’s worth at least £1 per mile! Sponsor Ben’s Walk.

Prayer matters. 10th June. All day. We sometimes what to pray about or how to pray, but what we do know is that prayer matters. Prayer changes things humanly and spiritually because prayer is part of our discipleship as Christians.

We’re inviting everyone to engage in a day of prayer on Monday June 10th. You don’t have to go anywhere to do this. You could do so aloud, on a walk, in silence, or with a few sentences of thought in your soul.

    What are we praying about?
Visibly, we’re praying about the church tower Brighton Road Busbridge. You’ll have heard last week that there are serious issues that we have just got to address now.

Spiritually, we’re praying about a tower that stands as a sign of faithfulness and faith to all who see it. We’re praying for renewal of faith.

Financially, we are praying that people will help us to raise the necessary funds.

To help you pray through June 10th you’ll get a day-prayer card when you gather at a service this Sunday (9th). Please use the card to pray throughout the day. If you can, please gather in the church, below the tower, at midday on Monday to join in praying together.

The invitation is for every one of us to be praying throughout the day.

No prayer is too small or insignificant.

    Every prayer matters.

You’re also invited to take a bundle of leaflets about the tower and deliver them through local doors. There’s a map at the back of Brighton Road Busbridge where you can colour a road in and deliver, pray for that road and the people in it. It’s an invitation to pray walk later in the week too!

Staff and PCC Strategy Day on 18th May
Thanks to the members of the PCC, Clergy, Lay Ministry and staff teams who gave their time last Saturday. We had a great day with Rev Mat Ineson who helped us consider the future. We’ll share more details soon. See pics on facebook.

Fridge wanted for the Busbridge Old Rectory kitchen
Following extensive PAT testing across all Minster sites this week, there have been quite a few electrical items that have not made the grade. The fridge freezer in the kitchen at the Busbridge Old Rectory is one of them. Before we invest, please let Liz Gorst know if you have a suitable replacement to donate – Full height, fridge above freezer, or American style (hopes the youth director) to store things like milk supplies for tea and coffee, food for youth groups and cakes for PrimeTime!

    Church tower, Brighton Road Busbridge
If you’ve been to the church office or yew tree café you’ll have seen that scaffolding has gone up around the church tower. Initial work has been done to restore the tower. Further work will be needed in the next few weeks. We’re putting an information together for the church and the community. We’ll be asking for help to a) deliver information flyers to the community around the church in the week of June 9th b) prepare yourself for a day of prayer on June 10th for the works, finances and for peace (the church bell is called the Peace Bell) c) consider supporting Ben Rogers in a 48 hour sponsored walk later in June to raise funds for the tower restoration. More information will shared in the next couple of weeks. Thank you to Ian Tomes and the Minster buildings group for their care of all our Minster buildings as we make them suitable for the Minster’s mission and worship.

    Church Family News

Farewell to Jan and Neil Pinto who have moved this week from their home of 30 years to be closer to family in Cambridgeshire. Jan has been been a longstanding member of Busbridge and St Mark’s congregations, and has served humbly and faithfully in the church and the community over the years. Latterly she has worshipped at Franklyn Road and helped at Smartots. Her neighbours on Quartermile Road will miss her as she has been a most diligent and caring road steward, delivering the Bridge magazine and setting up the street WhatsApp in lock down. We send Jan and Neil with our love, prayers and best wishes in their life ahead. Their new address can be found on ChurchSuite (Search for Others), or by contacting the Minster Office.

    Pentecost Sunday

    Dear Friends

This Sunday we remember what has often been called the “birth of the church”.  After waiting on God as they had been told to do, the Holy Spirit arrived, filling, equipping and empowering the early disciples to spread the gospel, bringing the blessings to many that Acts and the early church’s letters describe.  He has been at work in Christ’s church ever since! Join us this Sunday to celebrate this important event, and the Spirit’s continuing work among us together!

The Godalming Run is also taking place this Sunday, so particularly for those coming to morning services at Church Street, please note that Borough Road, Church Street and Westbrook Road will be closed to vehicular traffic from 09.50 to 13.00. Parking in Crown Court and other car parks will also be busier than usual!

    Good News Stories

Newcomers to Godalming Minster enjoyed a nice little garden party in glorious sunshine last Sunday at the Taylors. Thanks to all those who came. It was great to meet you!

With thanks to Yew Tree Café volunteer Sue Hardy for sharing:
An elderly couple were in having coffee and cake. I was engaged chatting with them as they left… I established they had travelled over to the Yew Tree from Guildford, he’d just had a cataract operation and this was their first visit out  – I asked what brought them over our way – expecting an answer such as ‘We’d come to see grandchildren/children or a visit to the arboretum’ that had led them to us, but no…

‘Oh we often make the journey over…. This café is like no other café we have ever been to – we just love it! The staff are always so friendly and have time to chat to us, the coffee is great as is the food and cake, it’s got such an amazing special atmosphere’

Told them that had warmed my heart and hoped to see them again very soon.

This morning was a regular shift not manically busy but a lovely continual flow…. Some new mums who were warmly welcomed and will come again, our regulars who find company and solace and are ministered to, some staff and PCC members and mini meetings, the workers (quite a lot of them today), teachers and parents from the schools. Another new visitor who’s child has just started at St Edmunds just found us, was engaged with and will return. New parents who were commenting on the beautiful building and café we have created – was able to tell them the story of how it came to be…. I am very proud of it and love to talk about it!

This is ministry in the community….. Christ has no hands and feet but ours…… Love my shift…and the people God puts me in connection with, that I would otherwise never meet with.

As well as listing upcoming events, please do let us know of any encouraging stories from around Godalming Minster which show some of the many faces of mission. There are touching exchanges happening allover, be it at the Franklyn Road Hub, Foodbank and after school Youth Café; at PrimeTime events and Hearing Aid Clinics; at Octots, ABC Toddlers and Smartots to name but a few every week!

Prayer Request for the Staff and PCC Strategy Day on 18th May
We recently mentioned that the Minster’s senior leadership group was going to spend a day with an external facilitator from CPAS. The church family was asked to pray for the group and many of you mentioned that you had done this. The group began to shape the work that will be undertaken by the PCC and staff team together on Saturday May 18th at the Old Rectory. This is a second planning day where we will be looking at how the PCC and the whole church family take the goals forward of growing younger, discipleship and mission and evangelism forward, so that our vision is fulfilled to be a Minster that follows Jesus, loves people and renews faith.

Two of the churches within Godalming Minster are dedicated to St Peter, so it is fitting that this series takes us on a journey through the Gospels and Acts from the call of Peter to be a disciple of Jesus,  to his leadership of the early church.  This will be a thought provoking series about our personal journeys, and the opportunities for us as a Minster community, drawing lessons and parallels from the life and experiences of Peter.  We look forward to getting started!

Simon Taylor writes: Last Sunday Andrew Dunn (Hambledon) and Seb Cheek (Contemporary) both stepped forward to lead or preach for the first time. Everyone there was blessed by the way they each did this, especially as there were baptisms in each service! Thank you to Andrew and Seb for heeding God’s call.

90th birthday fun at St Mark’s and All Saints school field last Sunday
90th birthday fun at St Mark’s and All Saints school field last Sunday

The celebrations started for the St Mark’s 90th anniversary at the 10am Franklyn Road service last Sunday. Later the sun came out (miraculously?) just in time for the fun day on the school field, bringing Minster people and local friends together for 90 bumps on the bouncy castle, live music, crafts, games and a lot of cake! There’s more to come in 2024 as we mark 90 years of Christian worship, witness and ministry in the Ockford Ridge and Aaron’s Hill community. Thanks to all the organisers, helpers and fun-goers. See instagram for more pics.

    Coming Up – Highlights

Mens Breakfast Saturday 4th May  at 8.15 am

Please join us for another sumptuous morning feast. Well…coffee, toast, marmalade and porridge ….last month’s experiment with baked beans will be repeated another time….

This month we will be discussing another topical news item – and after 20 years of men’s breakfasts there hasn’t been one without a moral, spiritual or Christian dimension…and this month’s subject is water and  trains…..Time to put public good before private profit?  Our discussion this month  will be about how we make judgements about these sort of issues – is there a Biblical basis to help us sort out what is best…what is just?  Or is it all entirely pragmatic with little underlying morality?  Join us this Saturday to discuss.

Are you new or new-ish? If you’ve joined a Minster congregation, or starting coming to a group or activity in the last year or so, please do get in touch by replying to these notices, or filling in the welcome form. Simon and Catherine Taylor are hosting a tea for newcomers on Sunday 12th May so it would be great to have your details if you’d like to be invited.

As part of the bereavement support offered by the Godalming Minster Pastoral team, the next Bereavement Journey course starts on 5 June. This course is run nationally, for anyone who has been bereaved recently or sometime ago. Even those caring for a terminally ill loved one may benefit. Please find all the details here, and share with anyone you think of. Numbers are limited, so please do register your interest with Sandra Wilkin: pastoral@godalmingminster.org. See the events coming up next and look up dates further ahead in the full calendar.

Tues 8th May, 7pm – Godalming Minster is delighted to host Charterhouse School as they present a recital at Church Street (St Peter and St Paul’s). There will be performances from our jazz and wind ensembles and some solo items. All are welcome to attend and admission is free.

    Mission Update

    Furniture request for Ukrainians
The Godalming Minster congregations have good reputation for supporting requests for Ukrainians as they move from host families to homes of their own. Can we help two young women who signed a contract on a flat today and have absolutely no furniture?  If anyone is refurbishing or upgrading their kitchen, we should be thrilled to have a washing machine and fridge freezer.  Apart from that, general household goods of any sort will be appreciated. We have a few bits and pieces in a garage where we store things but for example, no sofas, if someone is replacing one of theirs. Contact Diane e: diane.alder@btinternet.com.

  • Notices for 14 April 2024

The Choir at Winchester Cathedral on 7 April 2024
The Choir at Winchester Cathedral on 7 April 2024

    Dear Friends

We hope you have had a wonderful Easter time and will be back with us this Sunday as we embark on the summer term. All services and congregations are back to the normal term-time pattern, with children’s groups running at 10am at Hambledon and 10.30am at Church Street.

Reflecting on the first 3 months as Godalming Minster, with a first Christmas and Easter now behind us, we are really encouraged by some of the signs of growth in mission and ministry. It’s not all about the numbers, but they give an idea:

    • Our Ana chaplain and Godalming Minster volunteers shared communion at two local care homes, with 16+ of residents and staff attending at both.

    • Busbridge Infant School Easter services had all the children plus over 70 great parents in attendance.

    • The Hambledon coffee morning and hearing aid clinic was full to overflowing last month.

    • The Franklyn Road Youth Café on Wednesday afternoons, and the Friday Night Youth social are both growing in popularity, and are needing more volunteers if we are to welcome more young people.

    • Easter Garden service at Brighton Road was fully booked before the publicity event went out. Nearly 200 attended on Easter Saturday.

    • The reintroduced Choral Evensong at Church Street has gathered 40+ people to worship at 5pm for the second month in the row. It’s a wonderfully reflective time inspired by excellent choral music.

    • The Minster choir were invited to sing at two services at Winchester Cathedral last Sunday which was greatly enjoyed by the regular cathedral congregation, and all who went from Godalming. Full story.

If you can feel you can support God’s work in Godalming through the Minster, please do get in touch to offer some time on Sundays or any of the many midweek activities, and also review your financial giving.

    This Sunday

We pick up the Transformed Living sermon series where we left off, in Ephesians 5: 6-21.
The topic is Live in Wisdom and by the Spirit.

    Easter Giving

It’s not too late to give to the Easter Appea!
Our Easter Appeal is for two of Godalming Minster’s chosen mission partners which are centred on following Jesus:

     CPAS

(Church Pastoral Aid Society (National Anglican Mission)

Since 1836 CPAS continues its calling to work with churches and leaders to help them share the gospel afresh in each generation. Its current ministry involves the oversight of Venture and Falcon holidays, appointing evangelical clergy to our patronage parishes (such as Godalming Minster), and training, resourcing and supporting leaders for mission and evangelism.  See cpas.org.uk

    Five Talents

Five Talents works with the Anglican Church in rural areas of eastern Africa to provide microfinance & business training to communities who have been economically

& socially marginalised.  The charity has strong connections with members of Godalming Minster who have played an instrumental role in the mission.  See fivetalents.org.uk
