Many of you will know that Frances Trickey has been poorly for some time.  It is with great sadness that we share that she died last Thursday evening (24th October).  There are no funeral details yet, but we will pass them on as soon as we hear.  Please pray for Jolyon, Josh, Abi and the whole family as they mourn, asking God to give them his peace and comfort.

    November

Men’s Breakfast Sat 2nd Nov 8.15am in the Busbridge Old Rectory
This month we’ll be looking at one of the worst kept secrets in recent history, today’s Budget, and assessing how it measures up theologically as well as fiscally. Leaving any party allegiances at the door (as we always do), does it achieve the biblical imperative of looking after the widows, orphans and foreigners among us? And what about tax generally – is it a case of “Render unto Caesar what is Caesar’s”? Should we regard paying our taxes as a civic pleasure to finance a civilised society or legalised theft of hard-won assets? Who knows where else our discussion will take us…? Come along on Saturday to find out!

Busbridge Coffee Morning Wed 6th Nov 10.30-11.30AM in the Yew Tree Café
Members of the Classic Congregation would love to have a coffee and chat with anyone from the Brighton Road and other Minster Congregations. They meet in the Yew Tree Café once every 1st Wednesday morning of the month.

Nexus 7 NovFelt Christmas Trees & Mulled Wine
    Helen Sturney
will once again use her artistic talents to help us make Felt Christmas Trees to use as decorations during the festive season.  No cutting or sewing involved so just bring yourselves along to enjoy a fun and relaxed craft evening, with a glass of mulled wine!  8pm in the Busbridge Old Rectory. All are welcome!

    Goodbye to Juliet
We will be saying goodbye to Juliet Gilbert this Sunday 27th Oct at Contemporary. After an incredible 10 years of faithful service, our wonderful 0-4s worker will be stepping down to spend more time with her family. Her final working day will be Wednesday, 30th October. Please join us in expressing our heartfelt thanks and praying for her as she embarks on this next chapter. Please see ways to give and if you’d like to contribute to a gift.

You can find the details on our vacancies page, the diocese jobs page and on New Wine jobs. The most important request is to pray. • Notices for 21 October 2024

    Dear Friends,

This week the Minster’s rather long Harvest Festival concluded with the St Mark’s and All Saints school harvest assembly at Franklyn Road. Thanks to everyone who has given so generously to the Foodbank at whichever service you came to, and for your donations to the Harvest Appeal for the Church Army. (If you still wish to give, please see the Giving page.)

Last Sunday Hambledon shared a hot harvest lunch with new friends at the village hall, and many of you from across the Minster came together at Church Street to say goodbye to John and Sue Harkin. The bring and share Harvest lunch was wonderful! John and Sue moved down to Cornwall this week, leaving us this message:

Sue and I wish to thank you all for allowing us to serve alongside you over the last few years, it has been a privilege. Along the way we have got to know many of you from across the congregations and it has been a real joy to share in some small way in your lives. We are very grateful for the opportunity and pray you feel supported and encouraged for the future as you continue to grow and mature in your walk with the Lord.

Thank you too for such a wonderful retirement occasion last Sunday, what a treat! We were very grateful for the ‘This is your life’ format as a way of saying goodbye after the service. We really appreciate your cards and the gift voucher to use at The Horn of Plenty Hotel and Restaurant near our new home; we shall remember you all as we raise a glass when sitting in the restaurant! We are also grateful for many of you sharing personally, we feel quite humbled, and for your gifts.

Please be assured of our continued prayers for Godalming Minster.
May the Lord bless each one of you.

    John and Sue

Following two successful sponsored walks over recent years, our Bishops Andrew and Paul are inviting you to join them once again on a sponsored Bishops Camino along the Hogs Back to the Watts Chapel in Puttenham and back via the Wey towpath. The  circular route is 7.5 miles (12km) and there will be three prayer stops along the way.

The previous walks have raised over £6,000 for the Bishop of Guildford’s Communities Fund, which provides funds for parish projects that help the disadvantaged and vulnerable across the Diocese of Guildford. Bishop Andrew would love your help once again so that the Fund can continue to support deserving community projects. Please follow the link below for more details and how to sign up.

    Dear Friends,

We come to the end of Godalming Minster’s fortnight Harvest Festival this Sunday, and so far the schools and congregations have been very generous. Thank you. The Foodbank relies on Harvest and Christmas collections to boost stock levels, and would appreciate any items on the Foodbank shopping list.

The financial Harvest Appeal is for the Church Army and you can look up ways to give on the giving page.

Recruitment of bookkeeping service provider to expanding Minster Finance team

It’s an exciting time as Godalming Minster extends its ministry and activities across our four sites and three former parishes.   But with that excitement comes a lot of extra accounting work!  To support that important work (which in turn supports our mission and ministry) we are looking to contract the services of an experienced bookkeeper to join the finance team, working from home under the supervision of the Treasurer and Management Accountant.   This is a part-time role under a contract for services with flexible work patterns, expected to average around 18 hours per month, but precise number of hours may vary from month to month.  Workload is likely to be higher between January and April during preparation of end of year accounts and subsequent audit.   Precise responsibilities s can be agreed depending on the skills and experience of the individual, but the main task is monthly bookkeeping of income and expenditure, comprising:

      1. Posting of transactions on Xero – the church’s accounting software

      2. Reconciling transactions to the relevant bank accounts

      3. Other reconciliations where necessary, including Barclaycard statements

      4. Set up and maintain spreadsheet records where necessary

      5. Assist with journals and control account reconciliations as required

      6. Keep electronic and paper files suitable for audit purposes

      7. Any other tasks reasonably required by the Management Accountant and Treasurer

      8. Liaise with Management Accountant, Treasurer and staff members in performing these duties

Training in church accounts and processes will be provided, but the service provider would need to be familiar with general bookkeeping and related software including Excel and ideally Xero.   Remuneration will be competitive for such bookkeeping services.    To discuss in more detail please contact Lesley Reeves (management accountant:  accounts@godalmingminster.org) or Martin Lambert (Treasurer: martin.lambert@godalmingminster.org ).

    Mission Update – 15 September

    Mission beyond: loving people

Key to the vision and purpose of Godalming Minster is to share God’s love by serving others, nurturing our own discipleship and sharing the story and joy of His love by our witness. Traditionally, this is done through Minster led outreach activities, as well as supporting a range of Christian mission initiatives.

In the past, each of our former parishes had different approaches to mission partnership. Under Sheila Samuels, the former Mission and Outward Giving work of two parishes has become part of a new mission team (which now awaits leadership by the new Associate Minister for Mission and Evangelism, based at Franklyn Road).

For the coming season, Godalming Minster aims to develop long term, deeply prayerful relationships with a few regular groups who have a mission and evangelism heart. The mission focus outlined is fixed for the next few years. Each of the mission agencies has a connection to the Minster, so we can share in the successes and challenges of their activities and be actively involved together.

Each festival time of the year, you’ll be able to commit your financial and prayer support to all the mission partners we’re supporting, some of them, or one. You can indicate this on the mission giving forms and online/via your banking. Only our treasurer knows who gives both for mission and in any giving in general.

Harvest is about…loving people and renewing faith – focussing mission locally and nationally

We’ll be collecting harvest goods for the Franklyn Road Foodbank at all Harvest services, and raising funds for the Church Army (National Anglican Evangelism).

Christmas is about…loving people – focusing mission locally

We’ll be raising funds for female inmates at HMP Send, and Godalming based charities The Cellar Camino Café and Skillway. We’ll be collecting Christmas goodies to produce hampers for clients of the Franklyn Road Foodbank and households known to the Minster via our church schools.

Easter is about…following Jesus and renewing faith – focussing mission nationally and overseas

We’ll be raising funds for the Church Pastoral Aid Society (CPAS), and Five Talents (a global mission partner).

In addition, the PCC has set aside annual funds to support youth work in the town through TTT, and Eco church developments, so we can encourage others to also care for God’s creation. Funds also go directly to support our two church schools.

    Foodbank Update

The Franklyn Road Foodbank is getting busier at the moment, and currently short of oatcakes, gluten free cereal and biscuits and nappies in all sizes 3-6 please! BUT all donations of food and cleaning items are welcome anytime. See the Foodbank for more info.

    Church Family News

We remember Mary Pagan, whose gifts as a flower arranger enhanced many of our church events.  Please pray for her close friends and all who mourn for her.  Mary’s service will be in Godalming Minster Brighton Road, on Thursday 3 October at 12.30 p.m.

After an incredible 10 years of faithful service, our wonderful 0-4’s worker, Juliet Gilbert, will be stepping down to spend more time with her family. Her final working day will be Wednesday, 30th October.

We are beyond grateful for the countless lives Juliet has impacted, the love and creativity she’s poured into our little ones, and the joy she’s brought to our church family. Her dedication has truly shaped and blessed this ministry.

While we will certainly miss Juliet, we are excited for this new season in her life and wish her and the family every blessing! Please join us in expressing our heartfelt thanks and praying for her as she embarks on this next chapter. We will be saying goodbye to Juliet on Sunday 27th Oct at Contemporary. Please see ways to give and if you’d like to contribute to a gift.

Thank you to David Brockman (Contemporary) for his time and dedication as editor of The Bridge Magazine over the past two years. David is handing over the magazine as he begins his training to be a licensed lay minister. We are delighted that Brian Whitehead (Classic congregation) will be the new editor, and that the much loved parish magazine for the Busbridge community will continue to be in safe and creative hands!

Please continue to pray for two groups in particular which are longing to equip and strengthen God’s Kingdom in and around Godalming Minster over the coming weeks. The Bible Course is running in the Yew Tree Café on Wednesday evenings, and our Autumn Alpha Courses began this week with an introductory sessions. You can still sign up to Alpha either Wednesdays at 7.30pm, or Thursdays at 12pm, and please do take the opportunity to invite friends along.

    Elsewhere

The next Theology Hub event on 24 October is with Rev’d Prof Jeremy Begbie. Jeremy will give a performance lecture (theology and live music) on the topic of the relevance of the arts for people of faith. This will be an excellent evening for discipleship for your key leaders, for people who have recently done Alpha or who might be interested in looking at theology, and for all who are involved in worship and music.

Jeremy is an academic who speaks in a down to earth way that connects with a range of audiences. You can buy your ticket here:

Did we say dinner/lunch? Yes! It’s one of the fundamentals of the Alpha course and we are so grateful to those who have offered to provide the 24 Alpha meals over the next 12 weeks. So, while signs up are welcome this week, walk-ins might cause a little embarrassment if we haven’t set your place. Mission Update

We send love to the families and friends of two people who are longstanding friends of Godalming Minster, both with particular connections to Busbridge.

Many people will remember Guy Gammell, who died last Friday in Shottermill House.  Please pray for Josie and Henrietta, and their families, as they mourn.  Guy’s funeral will be on Wednesday 25 September at Godalming Minster, Church Street, at 2.30 p.m.

We also remember Mary Pagan, whose gifts as a flower arranger enhanced many of our church events.  Please pray for her close friends and all who mourn for her.  Mary’s service will be in Godalming Minster, Brighton Road, on Thursday 3 October at 12.30 p.m.

Please pray for God’s peace and comfort to surround them all.

We send our love also to Olena, whose best friend and her daughters were killed in a Russian strike on Lviv last week.  Please pray for God’s comfort for Olena, and also for her friend’s husband, Yaroslav, who was injured, but survived.

Thank you from the Samuels family:

A huge thank you from us for the lovely send off and generous gifts. It was so lovely to see so many of you at Patrick’s licensing service too.

We are settling in well and the girls seemed to have embraced College and school life. We give thanks to God for the privilege of journeying with you all for the last 5 years, for both the challenges and joys. We will continue to pray for you all as you journey into another new season. Sending you all much love, thanks and best wishes, Sheila and Patrick, Tamara and Sophia.

Marcus has a few spaces left this September for one-to-one or group drumming lessons. Please do share the info with anyone who might be keen to learn!

    Dear Friends,

This Sunday is one not to miss. It’s “Vision Sunday” when we look up, around and ahead to what we are here for, and how we are called as people of Godalming Minster.

To help us embed and step into the vision, the Autumn sermon series will be following the Alpha Course. It will allow us to ask some fundamental questions about our beliefs and faith, perhaps for the first time, starting with whether God really has a purpose for our individual lives.

The Stay Curious sermon series is by no means a substitute for being part of the Alpha course – with discussion time and bonding over a home cooked dinner each week – but it will give all of our Minster family a flavour of what Alpha is about. If you feel prompted to delve deeper, there is still time to sign yourself up or invite a friend for the evening or lunchtime Alpha courses starting 25th September! (details below).

  • Notices for 1 September

A huge thank you to EVERYONE who has been involved in Holiday Club this week. We’ve shared the greatest treasure with more than 60 4-11s who have had the most brilliant time together. The key verse was Philippians 3.8:

Nothing is as wonderful as knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. I have given up everything and count it all as rubbish. All I want is Jesus.

We said it, sang it, and lived it out together over the last three days, with pirate themed games, craft and baking activities. And it’s not quite over yet. You can still be part of the adventure this Sunday 1 September, 11am at Brighton Road and afterwards for a BBQ in the Busbridge Old Rectory.

Simon’s installation will be at the Cathedral on Sunday 24th November at 6pm. All are welcome to attend, which will be part of the cathedral’s evening service. Happening at the same time will be the Godalming Christmas Light-up parade, which will this year finish at Godalming Minster Church Street with an informal carol service. The choice is yours!

Please pray for Keith Harper, who is currently an LLM in the Minster, as he discerns a call. Keith will be spending time with HTSM, Holy Trinity and St Mary’s, in Guildford. Please also pray for the new priest at HTSM, Rev Canon Simon Butler, as Simon supports Keith with his discernment.

We are delighted to announce the appointment of a new manager for the Yew Tree Café. Chantal Dennill will be joining the Minster team on 9 September, and we look forward to introducing her properly in the coming weeks. We are grateful to Donna, Olena, Luke and Miffy who have stepped up to keep the café running so well while it has been without a manager; and to Karen Hart, the Café Leadership Team and volunteers who have supported the paid staff.

    Coming Up

Sunday 1 Sep – 2 happy endings: Holiday Club Finale & Farewell to the Samuels
Godalming Minster will host the Holiday Club finale, and say a fond farewell to the Revs Sheila and Patrick Samuels at a special 11am All Age service at Godalming Minster Brighton Road.

This will be followed by a fun filled BBQ in the Busbridge Old Rectory Garden. A simple menu of sausages and burgers, soft drinks and lollies will be provided for a suggested donation of £5 per person. The bouncy castles will be out for the children too.

    What to bring:
    – Your own coffee cup for a drink before the service.
    – A rug or camping chair (we will put tables and chairs out, but there won’t be enough for everyone.)
    – a salad, side dish or pudding to supplement the BBQ if you wish. You might like to make enough to share.

We will be presenting Samuels with a gift at the BBQ to thank them for their contribution to St Mark’s and BHC and the evolution of Godalming Minster over the last 5 years. To make a last minute contribute to this, please see ways to donate.

    Alpha starting September
    Weds evenings 25th Sept – 27th Nov & Thurs lunchtimes 26th Sept – 28th Nov

Rev Lesley Mason is leading the courses this Autumn, and we’d like everyone to consider whether they would like to join in as a participant, or as a member of the team who helps lead, host and cater for the 12 sessions.

    A huge thank you to those of you who have already volunteered to help with food and who have signed up to pray for Alpha.  We have catering in place for the evening sessions but we still need the following;

    • Additional catering for lunch time sessions, including the Saturday session (when both groups come together) eg soup, sandwiches or bread & cheese, sausage rolls etc and a traybake, cookies or equivalent

    • One or two volunteers to help -preferably every week at lunch time or evening – to meet and greet, help set up tables and ensure that the catering group that evening know what to do

Please volunteer via the website, or by email direct to Sandra Wilkin – sandra.wilkin@godalmingminster.org

Look out for invitations, posters and social media posts and please share them and encourage people along.

To find out more or register for a place go to https://godalmingminster.org/alpha

The sign up button takes you to the Wednesday evening course, but gives the option to sign up for Thursday lunchtimes instead.
