  • Sunday 22 December for Christmas & New Year 2019

Happy Christmas—we look forward to seeing  each other at the services this week, and sharing the joy of Christ’s birth. To all those that are serving and helping in any way, we thank you!  Please keep thinking about the Christmas challenge:
    * When are you coming?
    * Who are you bringing?
    * How are you serving?

    Christmas Candles
Many of our Christmas celebrations involve candles, and particularly the  renowned Christmas Eve Candlelit Celebration (X 4!) at Busbridge.  If you or your children are planning to come in nativity costumes (and we hope you do!), please take special care with, or avoid highly flammable materials. There will be nativity costumes to borrow on arrival which have are treated with fire proof spray and these costumes will be collected in before the hand held candles are lit.  (Other fire safety measures will also be in place.)

Let us know what you think
After you have been …brought someone… and helped… we’d like to hear everyone’s thoughts on the services. A short online survey is now open for you to tell us what you think.  Please find it here

Going Greener – Busbridge&Hambledon has been awarded a Bronze Eco Church award by the A Rocha Eco Church scheme.  For information about what this means we are doing well, and the goals for the Silver award, see ecochurch.arocha.org.uk.

The church office will close at midday on Christmas Eve, and reopen at 9am on Thursday 2 January.  If you need a member of clergy when the office is closed for a bereavement or urgent pastoral matter, please contact the following:
    4 and 25 December: Dave Preece 07943 135170
    26 and 27 December: John Postill  01428 687968
28 and 29 December: Margot and Andy Spencer 01483 416333
    30 December and 1 January: John Postill 01428 687968

There is a further list of emergency numbers in a perspex box at the foot of the front door of the Old Rectory.

From the West End to Busbridge—Lisa Olsworth-Peter talks at Nexus, 9 January 2020  Not to be missed! All welcome (including men) to join Nexus at their first event of the new year to hear Lisa talk and sing.  Free for members or £5 for visitors.  The evening starts with nibbles and drinks in the Old Rectory.  Annual subs of £18  are due for Nexus members and can be paid on the night.  The 2020 programme will be available to pick up too.

Advance notice to get training!  The next BHC Spire2Spire run from Busbridge to Hambledon and back again, has been aptly scheduled for 12 Jan 2020 — Resolution Sunday!  Runners will get a smoothie on return to Busbridge before the 10am services!

    Funerals
A number of dear friends known to the church family have died recently and we ask you to pray that their loved ones will know God’s love and care, especially over the Christmas season:

The funeral service for Elizabeth Chadwick will take place at Guildford Crematorium on Friday 20 December 2019 at 11.15am. Please pray for Dave, his brother and the wider family, for comfort and peace.

We send our love to Gary Sherwin, whose mother, Eileen, died 7 December.  Please hold Gary, Lorna, Annie, Rosie and Edward in your prayers; also remember Gary’s sister and the wider family.

Longstanding church members will remember Jill and Derek Pitt, who moved to Milford some years ago.  We are saddened to hear that Derek died last Tuesday, 10 December.  Derek’s thanksgiving service will take place at Milford Church, on Monday 30 December 2019 at 2pm.  All friends are warmly invited to the service and also to refreshments afterwards at the West Surrey Golf Club.

The team in the church office would like to thank everyone for the cards and treats that have been arriving (sometimes anonymously!) this week.

The next notices will be published for 5 January 2020, but an important date for your diary is Resolution Sunday on 12 January when services will be back to normal, and we will be outlining the vision and theme for Busbridge&Hambledon in 2020.

  • Sunday 13 October 2019

Classic congregation social:  please stay after the Classic service today (13 Oct), to enjoy chat, coffee and cake.

Fairtrade Stall today: There will also be a Fairtrade stall  at Busbridge church after the Classic service. Cash or cheques (and customers from Contemporary) accepted.

    ‘Once Only’ Confirmation session
Want to explore your faith in a deep way but can’t make the evenings for the Confirmation course that is running? We’re planning to offer the course as a once only session on the afternoon of Sat 9th Nov, 1.30pm-5.30pm at the Old Rectory. If this is for you please contact Simon Taylor by Wed 16 Oct. There is no age limit (the youngest on the current course is 13 and the oldest is… much older). We’ll run the ‘Once Only’ afternoon if there is enough interest.

Sound people needed for all congregations.
We all appreciate that those at the front need to be heard on a Sunday!  The number of your fellow congregation members making sure this happens has dwindled to an unsustainable level, and we need to recruit.  Operating the sound system in both churches is easier than you might think, and training and lots of encouragement will be provided!   Please speak to Lisa Olsworth-Peter or Luke Taylor in Contemporary, Richard Morris and Michael Stubbs in Busbridge church, and Derek Pearsall in Hambledon.              e: lisa.olsworth-peter@bhcgodalming.org.

Annual Memorial Service, next Saturday 19 October, 3pm
This is an open invitation to all who may wish to come.  Invitation letters are available at the back of both churches, and at Contemporary.  Anyone who has been bereaved, however long ago, is warmly invited to join us.  We shall  be delighted to welcome any family members or friends who might like to come with you.

Ladies Pudding Night, next Friday 18 October, 8pm …And for dessert? is a delicious opportunity for ladies across Busbridge and Hambledon to relax on a Friday evening in a lovely Busbridge home.  Bring a homemade bake, something to drink, invite your friends and enjoy time out.  Email ladies@bhcgodalming.org to book.

Sun Loungers for Unplugged, 20 October
If it’s not buried too far back in the shed, the Unplugged team would like to borrow some sun loungers for next Sunday. The theme for the service is ‘Enjoyment’ – part of the Delight sermon series.               …Sun loungers? …In church? Whatever next?! (Those young, and young at heart, might have to come and find out more next Sunday at 6.30pm.)

Hambledon Ladies Breakfast, Saturday 9 November

Prison Week (of Prayer):  13-19 Oct
What does freedom mean to you?  For over forty years Prisons Week has prepared prayer literature for the Christian community to use as they pray for the needs of all those affected by prisons.  Please take a copy of the prayers for each day this week, or  find it on prisonsweek.org.

An update about staff vacancies at the Old Rectory: we have offered posts for some office roles in the last few days and we will give more information in due course. Please continue to pray for the youth ministry interviews next week.

As Karen Kinder is leaving her role as Communications Manager next week, it is a likely scenario that there will be no printed notices until her replacement is firmly in post (no date as yet). During this time, the team at the Old Rectory will only be able to send out a ‘lite notices’ via email – if you don’t already receive the notices by email and would like to go on the list please email communication@bhcgodalming.org. If you have notices that you want included in the future, you’ll also need to use the above email. Thanks for your understanding as we adjust to staff changes.

Come to the next Women’s Film Night on Tuesday 26th February, 7.30pm. On Thursday 7th March, Nexus welcomes Michael Baughen, a retired Bishop, a composer of hymns and an author, who is coming to talk to us. Old Rectory update
Final snagging happening at the Old Rectory as we prepare for the grand opening on 20th May!  Work is continuing on ‘The Hut’, the new youth base, which is really taking shape.

Warmest congratulations to Ruth and Owen Roseblade on the safe arrival of a second son, Lucca – a brother for Jacob – on Sunday 29th April.  All doing well!

    Meals for new families
The Roseblade’s are gratefully being served by some fabulous people in the church who help provide meals for families with newborns. This is such a helpful ministry and makes a huge difference to families in the early days. If you would like to join this team of people for future families with newborns then please let Ruth know at ruthroseblade@gmail.com.

    Alison Martin…
…would like to thank everyone who gave so generously to her leaving gift (after stepping down as Hambledon Treasurer after 10 years). She was very touched to receive the lovely picture of Hambledon and the garden vouchers. Thank you!

We have been saddened to hear of the death of Bruce Pearson, last Saturday, 28th April. Bruce was a member of the Hambledon congregation. When arrangements for his funeral are known, we will pass on the information. In the meantime, please pray for his family – for peace, comfort and a sense of God’s presence with them all.

Church Office closed + no notices
A reminder that the Church Office will be closed from Thursday 10th May –  Monday 21st May. There will also be no notices for a couple of weeks for the same reason. Apologies for any inconvenience.

If you lead a group or keep personal data at home and haven’t received this informative email, then please contact Karen Kinder in the church office and we will forward you the pertinent information.

    Prior’s Field Prayer Space Event
Tom Starnes from Busbridge Contemporary/6.30 is also the Head of Religious Studies at Prior’s Field School. Tom is  keen  to set up a Prayer Space event at the school this term, but he’ll need quite a lot of help to make it happen! He particularly needs someone who can take on the ‘team leader’ role. The prayer spaces website describes what this involves: www.prayerspacesinschools.com/prayerspacesteps/recruiting.
It is quite a big time commitment…is there anyone at Busbridge who might be willing and able to do this?
Looking at dates sometime in June (probably not 1st week). If you’d like to get involved or would like to know more, please contact Tom at tstarnes@priorsfieldschool.com.

    Helpful Habits
This latest prayer course has been cancelled due to lack of interest. If you would like to be informed if other dates are decided on please contact Gertrud Sollars.

    Become a Dementia Friend
Dementia Friends gives people an understanding of dementia and the small things you can do that make a difference to people living with this condition. As a first step towards Busbridge&Hambledon Church achieving Dementia Friendly Church status, we will be offering regular Dementia Friends Information Sessions at both churches throughout the year. The next session is taking place on Thursday 24th May at 7.30pm in the Church Room at Hambledon Church. The session last approximately 1 hour. For further details or to book a place contact Penny Naylor at the Church Office or email: penny.naylor@bhcgodalming.org.

    Nexus
On Thursday 3rd May, our very own Pat and Dudley Hilton will share with us their experiences of the beautiful and amazing Galapagos Islands. The isolation of these islands has allowed the preservation of unique indigenous creatures, some of them discovered by Charles Darwin!  Come along and meet the giant tortoise and see dramatic volcanic landscapes and more with Pat and Dudley’s photographic tour of the Galapagos! We meet in Busbridge Church Centre 8.00pm and there’ll be drinks and nibbles before the talk starts.  We very much look forward to seeing you!  All welcome!
