*** And there will be singing & special refreshments at all services this Sunday, in case you need any further encouragement! *** Please continue to wear a face covering in church.

    The Notices

Mens Matters The Men’s group resume their breakfasts on Saturday 4 September in the Old Rectory from 8.15am. Porridge, toast and coffee are followed by a discussion on one of the newsworthy topics of the day with those on the e mail list  getting more details nearer the time. Our discussion topic this month  will be about the future direction of the Church of England following a new publication  and a widely reported speech from the Archbishop of York. Our Rector Simon will be joining with us and after months on ZOOM it will be a thrill to regroup.  Please just turn up if you haven’t been before or contact Alan Betts (ajabetts@hotmail.co.uk) for more details.

NEXUS: To begin our Autumn term, on Thursday 9 September, we’re delighted that Charli Quay-Barnham, Head of Fundraising, will come and talk to us on ‘Phyllis Tuckell: Because Every Day is Precious’.  Phyllis Tuckwell is our chosen charity for 2021, so it would be good to have a ‘full house’ to hear about the vital work done by the team, both at the Hospice and in people’s homes; and how we might help. We’ll be meeting in the Old Rectory at 8pm!  It will be so good to see each other face to face again and catch up with friends over a glass of wine before Charli starts her presentation. All are welcome, including men if they’d like to join us!

The September Outward Giving Update is out now and provides an update on BHC mission partner, The Cellar Camino Café. Please take a copy from church or download it HERE.

The September issue of the Bridge is out now and will be available for road stewards to collect from church this Sunday. Wait for it to drop on your doormat, or read the online version HERE.

Mentoring Surrey Care Trust has a one day training course at St Nicholas Church Cranleigh on 17 August from 10am-2.30pm. We have a local volunteer involved already and really enjoying it.  We have so many people in the church who would be fantastic at this.  Mentoring is for both adults and children/ young people, so not specifically youth. And free training is never to be sneezed at, and it is a skill which can be used her or anywhere. See the poster here.

The Box Office is now open for you and your friends to buy tickets (£10) for the long awaited ‘Up Where We Belong Concert’ which Godalming Theatre Group are most generously staging with all proceeds going to The Cellar and Skillway. The link to the Box Office where you can buy tickets is:

    https://thelittleboxoffice.com/gtg

Or call the Box Office on 07402 484484.

Over 40 volunteers are giving their time, expertise and talents to raise money for our charity, so it is really important that as a mission partner, BHC supports the initiative and church members buy and sell as many tickets as possible for what will be a thoroughly enjoyable few hours of entertainment. After all music and theatre is so good for the soul, whether watching, listening or performing, and there are some very talented folk who will be performing to raise everyone’s spirits.

Godalming Food Bank needs your help
The Food Bank at St Mark’s Church & Community Centre has been running since 2011, with the support of Godalming Churches Together and the Town Council.  The recent pandemic has led to an increased demand and, together with the Town Council, we are working to ensure we can continue and enhance our service. To help us maintain our friendly and efficient service we would like to increase our number of volunteers.

From September we need volunteers who can spare 3 hours a week either on Monday or Wednesday between 12:00and 3:00pm.  There will be an organised rota, so volunteering need not be every week unless you wish to help more regularly.

The role is varied and involves setting up and clearing away produce, meeting and greeting people and generally helping with their requirements, and taking donations and organising storage. If this is something you would like to be involved with please contact either Karen or Liz. Tele 01483 418741 emailstmarkscentre@gmail.com

The Cellar Camino café volunteer vacancies
For those interested in supporting the amazing work of the Cellar Cafe, opposite Waitrose, next to the Borough Hall, there are vacancies for a book keeper to keep track of café takings, and for volunteers to cover afternoon shifts (approx 2-4.30pm). One of the BHC Small Groups is already involved, so contact Mark Puddephatt, or Penny Harris via the church office if you’d like to find out what it’s like to volunteer. See https://www.thecellarcafe.co.uk/

SURREY CHURCHES RIDE & STRIDE- 11th SEPTEMBER 2021

The Ride & Stride day is approaching. The Trust supports the repair and enhancement of churches in Surrey – and over the last 20 years we have raised about £500,000. Helping churches is only possible if you can help us to raise funds. The most popular way of doing this is the National Ride & Stride day when cyclists and walkers get sponsored to tour Surrey Churches. If anyone would like to take part as a sponsored cyclist or walker, or better still organise a group, please contact the Church Office.

Busbridge and Hambledon Churches are open daily for private prayer.

The Old Rectory is open Mon-Thurs mornings during August, and when not on leave, clergy and staff may be working from home. The answerphone is checked regularly, but the best way to reach people is by email.

Over 40 volunteers are giving their time, expertise and talents to raise money for our charity, so it is really important that as a mission partner, BHC supports the initiative and church members buy and sell as many tickets as possible for what will be a thoroughly enjoyable few hours of entertainment. After all music and theatre is so good for the soul, whether watching, listening or performing, and there are some very talented folk who will be performing to raise everyone’s spirits.

    The Notices

Last Sunday the 4-11s families bid a sad farewell to Judith Hawkey at the end of year Children’s Worship. Judith is leaving her post as 4-11s worker after making a huge contribution to the Children’s Youth and Families ministry throughout the coronavirus pandemic. New to a laptop when she started, Judith has ably taken to life online, Zoom and YouTube though much preferred leading worship with the Explorers team in the Old Rectory gardens, in all weathers. Judith has built great relations with the infant and junior schools too, and we give thanks for all that she has been to Busbridge&Hambledon church. You can also see Mike supporting in the background of this pic, as he has been throughout Judith’s ministry. From video production, graphic design and children’s craft, we’ve been very grateful for Mike’s time and talents too! Mr and Mrs Hawkey will still be worshipping with us, and we wish them much happiness as they celebrate their daughter Megan’s wedding to Nick this weekend, and the imminent arrival of another grandchild.

Congratulations also to all the Ark and Explorers who “graduated” to the next CYF group last Sunday. It was a sunny and joyful prizegiving.

    Living in Love and Faith
How do questions about identity, sexuality, relationships and marriage fit within the bigger picture of the good news of Jesus Christ? What does it mean to live in love and faith together as a Church? Several BHC Small groups will be following the national CofE course in September. If you would like to join one, please contact Simon Willetts. Info on the course can be found on the CofE web site here:

If you would like to contribute to the cost of the bibles, please contact Andrew Dunn to arrange a donation.

Busbridge Centre Redevelopment >>> Yew Tree Cafe

    SUMMER READING

What are the clergy reading over the summer? We’ve asked some of the clergy for their thoughts on summer reading material. You might like to dip into one or two of these.

Andy is reading Holy Envy by Barbara Brown Taylor.

For lighter reading, you could try Andy’s The Four Winds by Kristin Hannah. Written in 2021 it draws parallels between life in the 1930s in the USA and living through the pandemic today.

David Jenkins is reading Dwelling in the Psalms by Pat Marsh. It was written whilst the author was recovering from a long illness.

Simon T is reading A culture of Invitation by Michael Harvey which explores church culture and the importance of welcome. For a different type of reading Simon is looking at Dilemmas of Inclusion: Muslims in European Politics by Rafaela Dancygier.

Margot is reading Pillars: how Muslim friends led me closer to Jesus by Rachel Pieh Jones (Djibouti Jones). She writes about hospitality – given and received – and offers a salutary reminder that our primary call is to be good neighbours to those around us.

Hilary is reading The Salt Path by Raynor Winn as Hilary can now picture the places she writes about.

Simon Willetts recommends Gentle & Lowly by Dane Orland.

    Church Family news

From Gertrud: After 27 years of ‘commuting’ to Busbridge, I have decided to move to my local church, St John’s Farncombe. There are several reasons for this, but the deciding one is that at this time, if feels right for me to be there.

Busbridge church recommended me for training as an LLM in 1997 and have supported and encouraged me in my ministry ever since, and for this I am deeply grateful. I will continue to be involved in the Monday morning reflective prayer times and Space for God. May God keep and bless you all and (in the words of Hebr 13) ‘equip you with everything good for doing his will’.

    With fond regards, Gertrud Sollars

Thank you Gertrud for your continued ministry at both Busbridge&Hambledon and St John’s, Farncombe. We wish you well as you move to St John’s and are so glad not to be saying goodbye completely!

Carer / Companion needed – A vacancy has arisen in the support team caring for a long standing member of the Busbridge Church family.  Ideally the position available is for an experienced carer who could work up to 8 hours a week spread over either 2 or 4 days. However, applications would also be welcomed from people with no previous care experience and the position could become more of a companion role.  The purpose of the currently available position is to provide cover and a break for the live-in carer.  For further details please contact Penny Naylor via the Church Office or email: penny.naylor@bhcgodalming.org

    The Notices

BHC Outward Giving – MISSION SUNDAY 27 June – In Aid of TEARFUND India Coronavirus Appeal

The OG group writes: We are so fortunate in this country. More than half the population has been vaccinated, many of us have received second doses with few ill effects, and things are at long last beginning to open up. Compare the situation in India. Deaths from coronavirus are among the highest in the world. Having congratulated themselves on having controlled the pandemic last year the country has in recent months experienced a spiralling outbreak. Cities were locked down in response, and labourers within the cities returned to their villages miles away in the countryside, taking the virus with them.

We have seen on our television/computer screens the distressing images of people queuing to get into hospitals, dying while awaiting treatment, shortages of oxygen, ventilators, not to mention of doctors and nurses. And we wonder: it’s so far away, how does this affect us? Because, as Jesus said in the parable of the Good Samaritan, they are our neighbours. And we are in addition told that until the whole world has been cleared of coronavirus none of us is safe from it, vaccine or no vaccine. And, many of the vaccines we receive are made in India!

It’s time for us to show our compassion and our gratitude. Gift-aided envelopes are available at all services. Donations can also be made to the BHC appeal online, or via the Tearfund web site directly.

Tearfund have produced a 4-minute video which gives a message of hope, that people in India will get through this with their usual resilience and that recovery will come. But they do need our help now!

    Church Family News

Enormous congratulations to Rev Lesley Mason who has been awarded an MBE in the Queen’s Birthday Honours, for her chaplaincy work at HMP Send. Following her call to ministry and ordination while a member of Busbridge&Hambledon Church, Lesley was instrumental in the beginnings of the Busbridge Contemporary service in the Busbridge Junior School Hall in 2006. She has been Chaplain to HMP Send since and 2010. You can hear Lesley speak about her work in the recent interview with David Jenkins on the Outward Giving page.

We send our love and congratulations to Sarb Klair, who has sent exciting news and asked us to pass it on to friends here. Since his ordination four years ago, Sarb has been serving his curacy in the parish of St Nicholas, Thames Ditton, but is now moving on. After a long discernment process, he and Karen will be leaving Thames Ditton in mid–to-late July, for Sarb to take up his new post at an independent church in Oxfordshire, in a small village, with an average Sunday attendance of just under 300. His induction service at Long Crendon is expected to be in early August. Please give thanks for Sarb’s ministry in Thames Ditton, and pray for them both as they prepare to move to pastures new.

We have been deeply saddened to hear of the death of Gabrielle (Gay) Mabley, a longstanding and much-loved member of the Hambledon church family.  Please pray for Gabrielle’s family and many friends, that they may know God’s presence with them, and his peace.

We send our love and prayers to Lynne H, whose brother Brian died on 14 June.  Please pray for Lynne and the whole extended family, as they mourn.
