  • Notices for 10 July 2022

Thank you to Debs for sharing the call to prayer this weekend as the PCCs of Busbridge Church, Hambledon Church and St Peter and St Paul’s with St Mark’s prepare for Monday’s vote on whether to proceed with the process to unite the parishes and become Godalming Minster.

There has been some amazing prayer going on for the Godalming Minster Evaluation process, and the word clouds above and below give a sense of the responses shared at the monthly prayer gatherings which have taken place since March. The full transcripts from those prayer gatherings are rather lengthy, but you can take a look at the pdfs below too.

There’s a final chance to pray collectively this weekend, by joining the Busbridge Prayer Group on Saturday from 8-9am in Busbridge Church. All very welcome. This and other prayer requests can be sent to Michael Stubbs via prayer@bhcgodalming.org.

Children’s groups take a break but the service is family friendly and there will be a different sermon topic themed activity for younger ones to do during the service. (Parents and carers can also use the Yew Tree Café or Old Rectory garden as a break out space for children if required.)

Hambledon services join in August. On Sundays 7, 21 and 28 August there will be one service at 10am.

14 August – 10.30am Churches Together Bandstand service (part of Godalming Staycation). No services at Busbridge or Hambledon.

The Prime Time Garden party at Priors Field School was back this year and a group of lucky members were treated to a delicious cream tea served by the pupils, then performances from some of the young talent. It’s a real treat, and we are so grateful for the relationship with the school.

Update on Ukraine Refugee Project in Godalming and Villages
For an update on what’s happening with Ukrainians coming to the area as a result of the war, join us at Busbridge Church at 7pm on Monday 4 July.  The meeting will be led by the Godalming and Villages Support Group which has been a major investor of time in seeking Hosts; bringing them together; creating events including English lessons and supporting with both Hosts and Guests.

As a Church, the BHC4Ukraine project agreed to signpost prospective Hosts to Love Bristol, an organisation which has direct links with Poland and Ukraine.  Our input would be to provide support to those arriving in Godalming.  July 4th will be the key time to find out more about the current picture and see what we can do as individuals and collectively.

Please also put Sunday 21 August in your diary when we plan to hold a Garden Party for Hosts, Guests and our Church family to get to know each other and have some fun.  If you can help in any way- providing food, setting up, clearing away, entertaining (music, magic, games etc), please contact Sarah Black ASAP on sarahblack536@googlemail.com

Prayer for Ukraine continues at Hambledon Church
Every Tuesday evening, a number of us gather for 40 mins at 7.30pm in church, to pray for Ukraine. The Tuesday vigil is an opportunity to ask, amongst other things, that there may yet be a miracle of peace and an end to the fighting.

The Busbridge Prayer Vigil for Ukraine on Tuesday evenings has paused for the summer, and will restart in September. We are still praying for the country and situation privately and at Busbridge Morning Prayer (via Zoom) at 9am on Wednesdays.

Please do join in the call to prayer individually and at Hambledon Church this Sunday at 5pm.

Please pray for our churchwardens, consider how you might support them in their Christian ministry, and say  thank you to them over the next couple of days. We are blessed to have a long history of incredible churchwardens here at BHC and our thanks goes to Derek and Keith who stepped down as churchwardens recently, and also to all our former churchwardens of the past few years.

On Saturday there was a service at Knapphill to celebrate Clare Haddad’s LLM renewal of her ministry license for preaching, leading services and church ministry. Clare has recently taken on the leadership of our baptism course. We’re also celebrating 50 years of Peter Shaw’s ministry as an LLM. Congratulations to Clare and Peter. Please pray for them and give thanks for their service and commitment.

Please do pray for worship and music at Busbridge and let us know if you’d like to explore getting involved with music.

Prayer for Ukraine continues at Hambledon Church
Every Tuesday evening, a number of us gather for 40 mins at 7.30pm in church, to pray for Ukraine. This simple service takes the form of prayers we all say together, interspersed with reflective music to help us, as we bring our concerns and pleas before God. There is also an opportunity to add extempore prayers of our own, if we wish (not compulsory).

We can so easily get overwhelmed by the horrors we see on our TV screens, night after night.

    Coming Up:

    Nexus Talk: Thursday 7 July

Phil Darley, a Butterfly Conservation volunteer, will talk about monitoring and improving the habitat of the White Wood and other rare butterfly species in Oaken Wood, Chiddingfold.  Her other passion is closely linked:  planting and tending wildflowers in the local area; both very important for our environment!

Do join us on Thursday 7th July in Busbridge Old Rectory at 8.00pm. We’ll start with drinks and nibbles, giving us a chance to chat with others before handing over to Phil for her presentation. All are welcome, including men! We  look forward to seeing you. Our annual Membership fee is £18. There will be a visitor fee of £5.00 for non-members.

See the list below or look up dates further ahead in the full calendar. Select the event for details and the location (online or on site).

On the evening of Saturday July 30th, Busbridge Church will be the venue for a classical music concert by a newly formed choral group consisting of 8 young singers between the ages of 17- 22, all of whom are lovers of choral music.

The group consists of students from King Edward’s School, Witley, prospective and undergraduate students of both the Royal Academy of Music and Cambridge University, as well as some who are members of the world-renowned Rodolfus Choir.

They are gathering together in Busbridge this summer under the direction of former King Edward’s student Richie Zhang; wishing to transport you back to the High Renaissance, through a performance of captivating works by composers from all over the European continent, including Tallis, Byrd, Palestrina, des Prez, Gesualdo and many more. New Churchwardens
At the APCMs last week we thanked Derek Pearsall and Keith Harper for their service as churchwardens, and voted in two fabulous people to replace them. Dudley Hilton joins Fran Duffell as churchwarden for Hambledon, and David Wilkin makes up the partnership with Sue Hardy at Busbridge. Thanks to all four for their commitment.

    Children Youth and Families Ministry
It was announced at the APCMs and in services last Sunday that Anto will be moving on from his role as youth minister in July. Our love and prayers go with Anto and Jess as they embark on parenthood and Anto starts his new role for YPulse, a leading global insights and intelligence platform for Gen Z and Millennial consumers.   (This is something Anto is passionate about, and we are grateful to have reaped the benefit of his knowledge in our youth work over the last few years.)

Anto will be officially leaving us on 3rd July but will be leading youth groups on Tuesdays and Sundays until the end of term. If you would like to contribute to a leaving gift please see the giving instructions (BACS is best) and donate by Monday 27 June.

Children, youth and families ministry remains a priority ministry for Busbridge&Hambledon church.  As Ed Sherwin’s time as is also coming to its natural end at the end of term, the PCC have started to work on the job ads for a new youth minister and children’s worker.  We must also begin a prayer campaign for the recruitment process and the CYF ministry at Busbridge and Hambledon, and we ask church members to join us in that now, and to prayerfully consider who and how we can continue excellent CYF ministry in the interim. Please let Anto and Simon Taylor know if you would like to lead or help with groups and acvitivities.

Men’s Breakfast ALFRESCO SPECIAL – Fry up with Simon Willetts 4th June
If you haven’t been to one of the men’s breakfast before this is an ideal event to see if you might like to join the monthly group. For info contact mensgroup@bhcgodalming.org.

Family support meals – “Serving up love on a plate”
The church family is looking forward to a number of new arrivals in the coming weeks and months and one of the ways we show love and support for parents and families with new borns is with home cooked meals. It’s very simple – just cook more of what you might usually be cooking, and deliver some to a family with a new born baby. Please let Ruth know if you can help. No upfront commitment, just join the list and then sign up to do a meal here or there as and when you can. Contact Ruth on ruthroseblade@gmail.com

Nexus Talk, Thursday 5 May: ‘Rest and Relaxation at the Cellar Camino Café’
It has been more than 10 years since Chris Jagger spoke to Nexus about The Cellar and Skillway, both part of the Christian Warehouse Trust and one of BHC’s outward giving mission partners.  The Cellar relocated from it’s home of 40 years to a new venue in the Bury’s and was renamed The Cellar Camino Café in October 2020.  The Café welcomes everyone, with the principal objective of providing a caring and friendly meeting place for disadvantaged and vulnerable people in our local community.  Come along to Busbridge Old Rectory at 8.00pm to find out from Chris about this transformation and what services and activities are on offer at the new café.  You may even find you’d like to volunteer there; any offers would be warmly welcomed!

We’ll meet in the Busbridge Old Rectory at 8.00pm. You’ll be welcomed with a glass of wine or a soft drink and have a chance to catch up with each other before Chris begins his presentation.  We look forward to seeing you.

Prom Praise at the Albert Hall, 14 May – Bishop Michael Baughen would like to recommend a marvellous annual event in the Royal Albert Hall started by Noel Tredinnick and Bishop Michael 50 years ago! With great music and singing, Bishop Michael would love a group from BHC to go this year. It is so inspiring to worship with 5000 others and a great musical uplift. It is on Saturday 14 May at 7.30pm.. a huge choir and orchestra…   plus Keith and Kristyn Getty,  Graham Kendrick and of course Noel Tredinnick and his fine successor Michael Andrews. Seats are bookable: RoyalAlbertHall.com/booking/production/74163

Christian Aid Week 15-20 May – Please take a gift aid envelope from church
There will be a street collection for Christian Aid (focussing this year on Zimbabwe) in Godalming High Street on Friday 20 May between 10am and 4pm. Please contact Muriel Clark at muand0n@gmail.com if you wish to help with this. Christian Aid needs the money to continue working with the many projects it is involved in which may be overlooked at this critical time.

For those anxious to collect for Christian Aid in their own streets, this is now possible as COVID restrictions have been lifted. Muriel has a supply of ‘deliver only’ envelopes, which means that those doing this need only visit each house once, to deliver the envelopes. Would those keen to take up this opportunity please contact Muriel at the above address and arrange to collect a supply of envelopes, and let Shelagh know at shelagh.godwin@bhcgodalming.org so that she can advise on where to leave the filled envelopes.
