Invitation to Saturday Morning Prayer, tomorrow 9 Sep, 8-9am at Busbridge Church
A group meets monthly, on 2nd Saturdays, to pray for our church and community, and any particular prayer requests from church members and groups. Please do let Michael know if you have prayer request via e: prayer@bhcgodalming.org.

It’s a time of totally open prayer, though there is not pressure to pray out loud. Anyone within the new Godalming Minster is welcome to attend, and there will be an increasing focus on praying for the formation and flourishing of the Minster, and everyone it involves.

Saturday morning prayer is just one way to join the Godalming Minster “Prayer Community”. There are mid-week prayer gatherings at all 4 churches each week, and special sessions to pray for the Minster will be confirmed next week.

The Bible Coursestarting Thursdays at St Mark’s Church.
This is a chance for everyone Minster-wide to join the highly recommended Bible Course. The introductory session took place on 7th Sep, but it’s not too late to join!

The Bible Course is a brilliant way to bring the Bible to life and understand the whole storyline— from Genesis to Revelation. Along the way you will pick up tools and skills to help you read it yourself and apply it to your life. Though it was written for beginners in an extremely accessible in style, it will still challenge the experienced bible reader and help anyone rediscover the Bible afresh.

If you are not part of a mid-week small group, this is a chance to get a feel for the format, experience bible study in a group, and get to know members of the church family better. If you’d like to know more, contact Keith Harper who is leading the eight sessions at St Mark’s on Thursday evenings in September (7.30pm-8.30/9pm).

Invitation to join a Small Group
September is a great time to try a mid-week small group, as most groups enjoyed a summer break and will be starting to meet again this week and next.

The group which meets fortnightly on Tuesday mornings (9.20am – 11am) seeks new members interested in joining them for the September term.  All ages welcome. Please contact Cathy Brook via My ChurchSuite or the church office for more details.

A Wednesday evening group would also welcome new members. Please let Margot Spencer e: margot.spencer@bhcgodalming.org know if this is a good time for you!

New Wine 2024 – Book Now!
Having returned from a wonderful week at New Wine, the BHC contingent is keen to encourage a bigger Godalming Minster group to go together next year. It will be at Shepton Mallet, from 25th to 30th July.

Tickets are already available and selling quickly, so if people want to book, it would be good to get onto it sooner rather than later, especially if you want places in the fabulous children’s programme. Speak to Suzie Lambert for an enthusiastic testimony and more information!

The next Bereavement Journey course will start on Wednesday 18th October. Read more >

Week of Accompanied Prayer The Guildford network of spiritual directors is offering a week of accompanied prayer from 8.-13th October this year. A week of accompanied prayer is a bit like a retreat from home – you meet once a day (in person or on zoom) with a retreat guide who will suggest Bible passages to pray with and meditate on and talk about what you find. Participants in the past have found a week like this to deepen their prayer life and their walk with God; it also gives you a taste of what spiritual direction is about. Gertrud Sollars (gertrud.sollars@btinternet.com) has more information. See the flyer and application form.

  • Notices for 3 September – Vision Sunday!

    Dear Friends,

September is here, a new season begins, and for Busbridge&Hambledon Church and the parish of Godalming, the inception of Godalming Minster is just months away.

This calls for a vision which we all can get inspired by, with a map and a plan of how we are going to start the journey together. The scripture passages this half term will help us to equip ourselves spiritually to respond to God’s call as individuals and groups, as we consider People, Place and Purpose.

Wonderfully, many of you have already stepped in, and – metaphorically – “out of the boat”. Along with the sermons, we hope to hear from some of those who are already taking practical action pursuit of the Minster’s 3 main priorities:  i) Growing Younger, ii) Mission-Evangelism and iii) Discipleship. You can catch up on sermons and services you miss online, or explore the themes more deeply with others in a mid-week small group.

There is also a broad range of events, courses and activities starting in the coming weeks, and momentum will build thereafter. Read on for more details on this week’s highlights:

    • Muddy Church at Jack Phillips Memorial

    • Hymns and Pimm’s, 6PM at Hambledon

    • NEW! Ladies drinks (7.30PM tonight at the Howling Owl)

    • Men’s breakfast (Saturday)

    • Mid-week prayer groups restarting next week

    • The Bible Course, and Nexus which are all happening in the next 7 days!

    Week of accompanied prayer

The Guildford network of spiritual directors is offering a week of accompanied prayer from 8.-13th October this year.

“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”

as we are introduced to the priorities and goals to support the vision as we form Godalming Minster. All in all, it is a Sunday not to be missed!

Prime Timers a the Priors Field School garden party last Friday.

    Dear Friends

Penny Naylor writes [excerpt from the email to Prime Time]:

Our prayers were certainly answered last week as the Garden Party at Prior’s Field School approached and the weather forecast in the preceding couple of days got worse and worse.  On the day however, the forecast improved and the skies cleared just in time for the decision to be made that it should be OK to hold the event outdoors.  It really felt as though God was in this with us and the Garden Party itself felt particularly special.  Thank you to every Prime Time member who contributed to the collection for Emma, the member of staff at Prior’s Field who has been the driving force behind our partnership and who will be leaving the school at the end of this term.  Thanks to your generosity, we were able to give Emma a lovely bouquet of flowers in addition to the picture that was our original aim.

Although saying goodbye to someone is always a sad moment, last Thursday’s Garden Party did not feel like a sad occasion; rather a celebration of this wonderful partnership that Emma has instigated and the start of a new chapter as Miss Vicki Cottle takes over being Prior’s Field’s Prime Time Lead. We invite you to be part of this new chapter in the life of Prime Time, starting with the Summer Celebration on July 21st in the Old Rectory Garden.

    Matthew 4:12-25

As Jesus’ ministry begins, it becomes clear that His kingdom is on the move.  It’s victory is sure. Seeing this advance gives us hope, purpose and proof. As we hear Jesus today are we ready to follow and take our place?  19 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 20 At once they left their nets and followed him.

Thanks to everyone who has signed up – it’s already quite a party! As is the way at BHC, we expect more will sign up in the final days and hours, and roll up on the day. If you can decide sooner, it’s such a great help…

Everyone, new and old, from any congregation or church activity, fully involved and dipping their toes, is warmly invited to the 1 Big Summer Party in the Old Rectory Garden on Sunday 16th July from 6-8PM.  Though church never breaks up, it will be good to kick off our shoes as those in education finish exams and the summer term marathon, and we all embark on the holiday season!

We look forward to sharing this event with the wider family that will be part of Godalming Minster, but for those that can remember (fondly), this is a roll up of the BHC Newcomers tea, the invitational Great Girls Get Together and the Boys BBQ and Beer Bash.

Skillway, part of the Warehouse Christian Trust, is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year! Skillway was a diversification of the work of the Cellar Café (est. 1971) when local church members, including Chris Jagger and Shelagh Godwin, recognised the need to help young people who were struggling academically and behaviourally in mainstream school. 25 years on, Skillway has helped hundreds of teens by teaching them artisan skills such as woodwork and metal work, and through pastoral mentoring.

As a mission partner, Busbridge&Hambledon Church has supported Skillway from its beginnings with funds and volunteers and will continue to do as part of Godalming Minster. Please do read Skillway’s latest newsletter to get a flavour of what goes on. Follow @skillwayworkshops on Facebook and Instragram too!

  • Weekly Notices for Sun 25 June

    Dear Friends

Drum-roll please…. this Sunday will include the big reveal of our new 4-11s Children and Families Pastor in the morning services at Busbridge (and to all congregations in due course). Marcus Hockley started enthusiastically this week, and has already met a good few church members in the Old Rectory, The Yew Tree Café and at the St Mark’s new after-school Youth Café on Wednesday. “Excited” about Jesus and “can’t wait” to start children’s ministry here, are seldom more truly spoken than in Marcus’ case. This also means the CYF staff team is complete again for the first time in quite a while, and ready to lead us as we work towards “Growing Younger” as part of Godalming Minster. Thanks to all those who have been praying for this and who continue to serve in our Sunday children’s groups.

Also, among other things, in this week’s notices:

    • There’s a special Choral Evensong at Hambledon this Sunday (6pm).

    • Please sign up to the 1 Big Summer Party on 16th July.

    • The Bereavement Café is open again next Tuesday 27th from 2.30-4pm in the Old Rectory.

    • An urgent plea for people to join the AV rota at Busbridge.

    • TTT (Trinity Trust Team) celebrates its 20th birthday this Saturday, and everyone’s invited.

It is not enough to be counted as one of Christ’s he wants to be able to say (1:21) “for me to live is Christ”. How can we be like Paul?

    1 Big Summer Party – 16 July
Everyone, new and old, from any congregation or church activity, fully involved and dipping their toes, is warmly invited to the 1 Big Summer Party in the Old Rectory Garden on Sunday 16th July from 6-8PM.  Though church never breaks up, it will be good to kick off our shoes as those in education finish exams and the summer term marathon, and we all embark on the holiday season!

Live music will be provided by the Faith Blues Band who played their first sell-out gig in the Yew Tree Café at the end of April.  There will be drinks and a meal for everyone, and a chance to meet people involved in different areas of church life.

We look forward to sharing this event with the wider family that will be part of Godalming Minster, but for those that can remember (fondly), this is a roll up of the BHC Newcomers tea, the invitational Great Girls Get Together and the Boys BBQ and Beer Bash.

Friends are welcome.  Who could you invite?

There’s a suggested donation of £5 pp, and you can pay as you sign up.  And do please sign up – we want to provide enough food and drinks, but not too much! Of course, if you’d like to help, please contact vic.hicks@bhcgodalming.org.

NEXUS TALK 6th July: We are delighted that a team from the National Trust will be joining Nexus on Thursday 6th July to talk about the new Winkworth Visitor Centre and the National Trust’s recent acquisition of Munstead Wood. We’ll meet in the Old Rectory at 8.00pm. The evening will start with drinks and nibbles to give us a chance to mingle and meet new people before handing over to Katherine Mills, General Manager, NT London & SE Operations and her team for the talk.   Non members are very much invited to come along. There is a guest contribution of £5 which goes towards speaker costs and refreshments. Details and sign up here.
